I know nothing about bikes, but I owned an orbea vector. Could have been the Galway weather, cycling a lot in rain, but in a year I was replacing ball joints in the pedals, gearing mech tore off going up a mild incline, the brake was always rubbing against the pad(I prob should have returned it over this tbf). Suspected I was sold a dud but that's a conspiracy theory. They are probably fine in general

    That doesn’t sound too good.

I've had an Orbea Terra for a year now, using it off road and on road and no issues at all with it.Absolutely love it.

Avant would be a grand starter bike..

Solid frame, Shimano running gear, basic wheels. Ideal

Did the rear mech end up in the spokes or did the derailleur hanger shear off?

The derailleur sheared off yes, yer man said 'very common, were you going up hill in low gear', I was going up a shallow incline alright, bike 18 months old, just finished playing 5 a side, so I wasn't in any way pushing it.

I think you need a new bike shop - AFAIK all the tension in the chain is on the top stretch, between the cassette and the chainring, so doing that shouldn't put undue pressure on the derailleur.

Oh I never went back after that. Only went in that time as I didn't think he'd charge me, well I'd be certain I was overcharged too. Got a scultura 200 last year, much more pleasant experience all round and the bike is good for what I want.

I have an avant 2017. Great frame, can souce cheaper bikes with Canyon etc however some heritage with orbea. Ps, the new avant has some black plastic nonsense underneath the frame, would ditch that if buying.

All “ Bike” manufacturers make frames and forks only. All the issues you had are with the components. if you were doing a lot of cycling in the rain, were you regreasing /maintaining the bike regularly?

I've an Avant for about 5 years now, great bike & never any issues with it. Also have a Terra for offroad, it has taken some battering on the Wicklow trails the last few years and still going strong.
