I think he could thrive in RAs system but he's been injured nearly the entire time since RA took over. He struggled in the wide open spaces of ETHs system but that shouldn't be an issue now plus he is incredibly press resistant which is something we need in midfield.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

he is prob the cheapest best option available. no way palace want £35m for mateta.

we need as close to a sure thing as possible - and i think its him. he did have 2 good seasons in the championship so is used to the physical side of things from that. the championship is also the 2nd fastest league in europe.

would be interesting to see where we would turn if we dont get him.

the like of mainoo and ugarte - i wish they were a threat at scoring from set pieces (taller, better heading, good runs, positioning) and defending set pieces aerially.

they just need that extra dimension to their game.

looking at mainoo's stats on fbref, they aint great. ugarte at least has elite defensive output.

Assist for Cunha (played 79 mins) in 1-0 win for Brazil last night. Casemiro played the 90 mins and set off the attack with a nice ball out to the wing.

I think Mainoo should be great in the 8 position for us.

    Ability to resist pressure? Yup.
Ability to carry the ball on the run? Yup.
    Ability to pass accurately? Yup.

What he needs to improve imo, is the number of actions, and his defensive intensity.

He doesn't get on the ball enough, doesn't get enough touches in a game.
I think he does have good defensive positioning, but his speed and intensity in tackling/defending is poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,111 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

I still think Mainoo can and will be one of the best midfielders in world football. Not easy to be playing in that position, in teams as open/poor as it has been, as a teenager.

Plenty to improve upon but plenty of time to see that.

Would agree. So its either him or Bruno as one of the two. Both cannot play in the middle of the park two. We will get destroyed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,111 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

That's the way I would see it.

And both need someone better than Ugarte alongside them. I rate Ugarte, just think he's a little less than what we need. Don't think it'll be addressed this summer, I wouldn't prioritise it either... But if we have a decent summer and league then a Ugarte upgrade would be high on my list for next summer.

Would agree on all except I don't rate Ugarte. Very average on the ball and also poor in the air. We really got our pants pulled down with him as well considering Onana went to the Villa for the same monies

He went to Saudi Arabia for money but could easily have moved to most Champions League clubs

I like Ugarte. He had a poor end to the season, but in general I like him and only really have an issue with him in the air.

I don't think he is as bad on the ball as people make out - and we are focusing on the small amount of errors he has made, which all players make, and making that 'his game'.

He is tidy on the ball, not adventourous at all really, but his cross field switch is very good, under utilised imo. And I do think his conservatism on the ball is a function of what he is being asked to do. When the game has less pressure on it, I think you see him relax and express himself more.

But then I also don't think him being conservative on the ball is an issue itself, really. IMO the issue was highligted by the CBs not being attacking enough (as needed in the system) and the 10's regularly not coming deep and being able to take the ball on the turn.

I do think with Mbeumo (hopefull) and Cunha ahead of him, Amad at RWB and the defenders settling into the role they are supposed to play in the attacking sense the lack of progressive passing from the defensive 6 isn't going to be the major issue people see it as.

I do think we could improve on him and someone with a bit better technique under pressure and more progressive on the ball, without losing the defensive side, would be great. but hard to find and buy that player. His lack of height or physicality in the air is also an issue when you possibly have a bunch of other players who are also poor in the air.

He was desperate for a Champions league club that summer, and january. None came in for him. So he could not easuly have moved to most Champions League clubs.

I think Amorim said he would quit Sporting if they signed him!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,308 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

Do you really believe that? His agent tried to get a move for him (Chelsea, Bayern, PSG and reportedly others) in summer 2022 and nobody went ahead with it. If someone seriously wanted him, he would have been gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,239 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I'm happy we're not doing the massive transfer fees anymore, could you imagine we signed a player for up to €150m!

There would be article after article and the pressure of a planets atmosphere put onto them.

They also never seem to work out for us either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,100 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

The same lads bigging the player up would be tripping over themselves to tear him down if it was us or Arsenal doing the signing. C'est la vie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,795 ✭✭✭Robson99

It's telling though that Amorim takes him off after 60 mins in a lot of games and didn't fancy him at all in our biggest game of the season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,954 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Jeez I don't know if I'm getting old, or a result of how quickly we got Cunha resolved, or if it's just because of the turd season we just came out of. City's high speed activity probably a factor too.

But I'm getting awful impatient lol. I'm grumpy about not having Mbeumo resolved and grumpy about not shifting any of the outgoings.

This damn club world Cup BS doesn't help ease my frustration either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,574 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

he runs himself into the ground, and usually we are chasing a game around that point so we kinda abandon the defensive plan at that point.

I personally think Amorim got the EL final all wrong from starting 11 to the subs.

Ugarte and Casemiro should have been the two. Bruno and Garnacho off Hojlund, or Bruno and Amad.

But it doesn't paint a great picture for Ugarte alright. But also no speculation that Amorim would like to sell him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,717 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

from a Portuguese outlet. we should just bid for him - having to sell to buy is a myth. organise the deal for 1st july. that then gives you all summer to sort outgoings (and jan 2026) if psr is an issue.

though i do think this will get a few more suitors to the party.

According to Portuguese paper Record, the Swede has been left frustrated by Sporting's desire to now charge around £70m.

They add that Gyokeres has insisted that he will never play for Sporting again, such is his determination to leave this summer.

The former Coventry striker has reportedly told club chiefs that he would even be willing to go on strike in order to get his move.

I don't know if he has the right attitude. He wants it if it comes relatively easy but to be one of the best you can't just turn up when the team is playing well.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

sporting president words below. i don't think we pay beyond the original 60+10 in euros (though it appears that was never a thing.

i think we pivot - but no idea where.

He explains that he and the club never promised Gyokeres that he could leave for a certain fee, but did guarantee one thing.

“There’s no point setting a value of €60 million (£50m). I don’t know if it’s going to be 40, 60, or 80. I don’t know, it will depend on the player’s performance. What can I guarantee? I will not demand 100 million euros. Period. That’s how the meeting ended. Who was at the meeting? President and agent. From then on, I never spoke to the agent again. I never spoke to the player about departures and values”, he continued.

“Months have passed. And now I see the agent in the press releasing information here and there, but there is one thing I want to make clear. Sporting has a good sense and its word. And the president of Sporting said two things: that Sporting would not demand the termination clause and that we would adjust the value to Viktor’s performance”, he added.

“And what was Viktor’s performance this year? 63 goals, 17 assists, runner-up in the Golden Boot, six goals in eight Champions League games. Fantastic. Surely one of the best players to have stepped on the pitch in the history of Portuguese football. And even so, Sporting will not demand the release clause.

“They should know me better by now. Threats, blackmail, and insults don’t work with me. And I can guarantee one thing: Viktor will not leave for €60m plus €10m (£50m plus £8m). I never promised. With this game that the agent is playing, the situation is only getting worse. To date, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres. Not today, not last summer. Viktor Gyokeres is one of the best footballers in the history of Portuguese football. He is a fantastic professional. To date, he has had zero offers, and he has a three-year contract.

If its going to be a saga to sign Gyokeres we need to walk away.

If he works out as good as either of them, that's another decent bit of business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,795 ✭✭✭Robson99

Where the f**k is he going to go to? If Arsenal or ourselves aren't in for him then there seems to be feck all others interested and neither of us have shown much interest in him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,717 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

links with psg and juve, unsure who else. i wouldnt discount chelsea either.

i just hope we dont finance another psg deal by buying ramos off them (apparently has been offered around to a few clubs).

Posturing from SL tbh and not unexpected. Sporting are and always will be a selling club and the comments above are basically trying to strengthen their position. At the end of the day if the player wants out there's little that can be done. I'd agree with others about getting tangled up in a saga, feck that, if we are interested make the offer and if they balk, walk away. Credit where it's due, INEOS thus far have not gotten ridden for anyone they've bought and I don't expect this summer to be any different.

I'd argue they got ridden for Ugarte, PSG dragged it out and United paid over the odds
