So much of the current position goes back to the toxic dressing room culture that blew up around the time of Pogba, Lingard et al.

Bringing Ronaldo back fed into that individual over team crap.

Anyone showing any sign of that needs to be moved on if there’s any chance of bringing the club back to the level it belongs at

We're wanting around 60mil for him, can't remember the last time we sold a player that high.

Has big potential but like you said, ego ruins a dressing room.

di maria and rom i presume.

i dont think we get 60m euro, never mind pounds. prob 45m euro i think is the best we can do for him.

    Good shouts. Quick Google says

Lukaku went for 74m. ( That's way higher than I thought)

Di-Maria was 44m pounds. About right for the time there and what was going on.

The club have said they want 60m for Garna so I'd guess a deal like 50 plus add ons.

    (All in pounds btw)

The Stratford Paddock Podcast had an a exclusive episode with Carl Anka ( I love this man with his detail he brings, he's brilliant for United coverage)

Well worth checking out just because it's Carl Anka, he's very insightful and does his homework for the Athletic about UTD.

The 2 above are ok and ask pretty good questions. That podcast should really ditch Stephen Howson.

Find it weird seeing Ronaldo lumped in with the others. I know he is deeply unliked nowadays but the others will be likely finished at a decent level before they are 30 due to píss poor attitudes, lack of professionalism and little desire to push themselves to the next level.

I don't see how that can be said of Ronaldo who is 40 and can probably still outperform those young bucks you lumped him in with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,239 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

This is his reply to me about having Mateta and Mbeumo.

Dear God. I'd rather stick with Hojlund who had a better first two seasons in the PL than that battering ram.

Mbeumo talk is the same. Buying unorthodox players who do well in mid table unorthodox teams. I don't get it.

Then proceded to call Brentford a team similar to Jack Charltons Ireland.

Maybe I was a touch harsh including him alongside those lads. It was mainly because when he was signed again it was another big ego we had to appease. You can’t question Ronaldo’s professionalism and drive but you can see how his selfishness and single mindedness could be seen as a detriment to the overall cohesiveness of the team.

It's a done deal with United. His favourite player growing up was Ronaldo and I think he was a United fan. He has mentioned his favourite position ison the wing aswell.

For his recent spell at United, Ronaldo was a prime example of someone who placed the individual ahead of the team. That attitude amongst a number of players has been a huge part of the problem in the dressing room. Can only imagine the damage it did for younger players seeing an idol like Ronaldo displaying a bad attitude towards the team.

Simply, if Hojlund doesn't suit us, then Mateta can't. Both one in three strikers, although Hojlund has had a better first two seasons in England than Mateta had, and obviously more scope for improvement.

I think we are more in need of a striker who plays on the last man, has high level of agility, and good acceleration over the first five yards.

Some people would have us sign everyone who moves.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

He shouldn't have done the interview and deserved to go for that alone.

But Ronaldo wasn't placing the individual before the team, his entire problem was that the standards in the team and the club were sub-standard. And he wasn't wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 382 ✭✭Seattle

He always places the individual over the team. Great player in his day, but always a narcissist. There's no question about that.

Not to say he didn't benefit teams on the whole throughout his career - he did. But he never sacrificed himself to do so. Not once - his ego simply would never allow it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,401 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

The narratives around Ronaldo are just so bizarre.

"People say ‘go with the flow’ but do you know what goes with the flow? Dead fish."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 382 ✭✭Seattle

    Indeed!

He was actually about to join City in 2021 which is why Utd re-signed him in the end - fearing that the brand damage of a 'legend' joining City would be too big.

After his career, his status at the club and how he was viewed by fans - only a narcissist would look to join City at the point he was going to!

Ronaldo rejoining was never the issue (hence him being the best player by a mile when he rejoined), the issue was that he had standards while the other players did not. This has been confirmed by Phelan and Solskjaer too I believe.

Unfortunately Ten Hag and his ego ruined that on his quest to make United rubbish.

The people blaming Ronaldo are basically just trying to be edgy by saying something which is complete nonsense.

Ronaldo staying too long was an issue. The first season was great but it should have been just that - a short term thing to allow the club time to find someone who would be a better team fit. They didn’t. It turned sour and he left less than half way through the season — ending up playing in Saudi Arabia.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 382 ✭✭Seattle

Re-signing him was a massive mistake in football terms. Even Solskjaer admitted it unbalanced the team. He scored a few goals but the team became worse overall. Ragnick recommended that he be ejected from the club half way through his first season back because he was more of a hindrance than a positive addition to the first 11.

We were fine with Cavani and Martial as our CF options! It never made football sense to bring CR7 back at that time.

There’s not a bad player in Raz. You have to remember, when Viktor Gyökeres was Raz’s age, he was coming off poor spells with Brighton & Hove, Swansea, and an average loan stint at Coventry. It wasn’t until his second season there that he really took off.

Players like that aren’t bought, they’re developed.

There’s no reason Raz couldn’t follow a similar path.

If he's happy to be a back up and learn I've no problem him staying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 765 ✭✭✭ngunners

That's insane, Mateta and Mbeumo are incredible players. I can only imagine this person has never seen either play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,239 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Or watched us a lower than mid table team 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,351 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

The problem is he is regressing year on year rather than developing.

He "earned" two big moves because people believed he had the raw materials and could develop into a top class striker. There is very little actual evidence on the field at United or Atalanta that he can develop into a topclass striker.

It's a big scouting fail and a massive danger of buying potential rather than proven ability. It looks like we came out the other side with Amad, and even though Amad cost a staggering amount for how much senior game time he had, Hojlund cost double.

It was an utterly terrible transfer, the amount they wanted for a guy who had proven next to nothing on the field, United should've walked away instantly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,545 ✭✭✭kerplun k

it’s valid criticism, but… He’s 21. He shouldn’t be the main striker at a club of United’s stature, not yet. The problem isn’t him, it’s that the club put him in a role meant for a world-class No. 9. That’s not a development plan, that’s mismanagement

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 428 ✭✭kyleman

I agree. He might never make it but completely mismanaged last year and should never have been starting every match as his confidence was completely shattered.

Very unfair on a young player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,392 ✭✭✭✭kippy

Ronaldo said it himself I believe. He was pissed that the standards had dropped so much since he was first at the club. One thing about Ronaldo he can back up any of the attitude he shows, still an excellent player.

I wouldn't place any blame on him for how the team are now. The rot was long there before Ronaldo and is still there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,464 ✭✭✭Quandary

I know it gets mentioned here every so often, but my god Ragnick was spot on when he said open heart surgery was needed to get things going in the right direction.

At least it feels like that is finally happening.

The surgery from a player perspective has already happened. Look at the squads from Ragnicks final few games. Unfortunately the surgery made the patient significantly worse.

Seems it’s off field surgery thats required so hopefully that will be successful this time around.
