I'm neither a diehard Morrissey or Smiths fan but I wouldn't dismiss Morrissey's solo gigs. I've seen him three times over the years and have always enjoyed them. They can be self indulgent, never are a "Smiths Greatest Hits" gigs but on the whole are worthwhile. Especially if your son is Smiths obsessed.

Morrissey and his solo stuff is well worth exploring. Some of it is truly brilliant.

Some stuff is worth traveling for and I particularly like the ease of getting around Germany. Great country for gigs, fcuk loads of beer choices, not expensive and never had any hassle whatsoever. PLUS - absolutely no chatter from the crowd during the show - brilliant.

It's not the quality of his material or performances that have stopped me going, I just can't be doing with his political views anymore. He has some brilliant solo material. Also, it has to be said, whole albums worth of shite. His setlists were always a tricky balance.

King Gizzard in Athens last night. They nailed it. Unsurprisingly. Up there with the other few hundred best gigs they've played.

And maybe the best venue I've ever been to.

Was this at the Lycabettus theatre, up the hill?

    Voyage 34 🤤

Sounds like a cracking trip, hope Nick wasn't doing his Borat impression when you met him.

I am from Athens originally and have been for gigs there quite a few times. I think it was closed for a few years (can't recall what the issue was), so very nice to see it used again.

Lycabettus theatre and Vrahon theatre are my 2 favourite open air venues in Athens.

Friday night gone was in St Annes Park for Stereophonics supported by James Bay who was good but found a bit of a 'lull' in the middle of his set. Stereophonics we're brilliant as was the setlist. A very tight professional outfit. You'd forget how many bangers they have

Saturday was in Kilmainham for In The Meadows festival headlined by the great Iggy Pop. Got in around 6 and didnt really take much notice of the other stages and bands playing. 'Spirits' we're not for me and Meryl Streek we're ok from the bits I heard. The Scratch we're amazing and nice to see them adding 'Another Round' since the last time I saw them last December. Iggy Pop lived up to his name and it was pure dirty rock n roll Punk from start to finish. Getting the hits in one block was great and got the crowd going. Superb backing band. Hopefully he will return and do somewhere like the Olympia or Vicar Street

Next up Jimmy Eat World on Tuesday in the Olympia

We were over the other side with two of our adult sons who were just as happy as we were . Good setlist and thankfully rain held off .

You had a good weekend lined up !

Upstairs at Whelan’s on Friday night for Shy Mascot, a jazz/funk band from Dublin. They were supported and joined on stage later by a class hip hop duo from Kansas called Kemet Coleman.

Last night was a trip to a packed Bello Bar for They are Gutting a Body of Water supported by a brilliant Anemoia.

Chanel Beads in The Workman's Club, Dublin

I'm an old man at this point, they're a young enough band.

Very kind of atmospheric and rock sci-fi on Spotify, not sure if that makes sense. Loved listening to their debut produced album.

They're even better live and that's an understatement. The bass, emotion and rawness is jacked up 90 while still holding the tightness.

Enjoyed Jimmy Eat World last night in the Olympia. The setlist was great and can't fault the sound. As I predicted 'Sweetness' and 'A Praise Chorus" sounded amazing. Loved 'Big Casino' and the 'The Middle' too. Can't beat a bjt of pop punk Kerrang style seeing New Found Glory in Newcastle this October and maybe Offspring & Simple Plan (ironically Offspring, Jimmy Eat World and New Found Glory all touring together in the summer)

Wished I forked out on the more expensive tickets, the middle circle (pun not intended) was some cramp and dark as a black hole. Didn't get to the merch, must have a look online

Steel Panther in the nearby Vicar Street next Weds

Yep, really enjoyed Jimmy Eat World too. Can't believe how young Jim and Tom look, considering they're almost 50.

Setlist was pretty much as expected though I was really hoping for "My Best Theory", as they do play it occasionally but sadly didn't make an appearance last night.

Jacob Alon - Workman's club. Magical gig from Jacob tonight. As I said before, sensitive gen z singer songwriter musings from a non binary beglittered and berobed Scot may not INSTANTLY grab you as a good night out but it was a special night. Just Jacob onstage, spectacular acoustic guitar accompanied a voice for the ages. They tread a thin line with the falsetto between angelic and overcomplicated, contrived **** but I think it's fabulous, every note felt real and sincere. Loved it and will defo be front row at Green Man.

Feeble Little Horse last night in Whelans. A surprisingly (to me) large turnout for a 50 minute set of shoegaze meets smashing pumpkins type shenanigans. Throw in some Medicine, Sonic Youth, Pavement and Deerhunter for good measure. Nothing spectacular but i'd certainly go see them again. A damn sight more impressive than Been Stellar last year. A mostly young and very appreciative crowd in attendance, i'd say the band will be keen to return.

Support was Affection To Rent doing their shoegaze/dreampop thing. It's grand but ultimately throwaway.

PIL in the Olympia were grand i suppose. Saw them a few times when they reformed, the last time at B&S (2013?), and decided i had no need to see them again. I went tonight solely due to picking up a cheap ticket. Nearly 2 hours and tbh i could easily have had 30 minutes less. Highlights for me were Poptones, Death Disco and Flowers Of Romance. The rest of it? Nothing wrong with it but it didn't excite me either. I won't be bothering again unless it's a festival appearance.

I went to The Workmans Cellar for Sygh’s new album release. Not sure who I saw but they weren’t Sygh. Not a fan of middle of the road soulless music at all.

Wrong venue again @Gloomtastic!? Think you need to lay off the extra-curriculars for a bit!

Had a great time at David Bowie in BelloBar last night.

    Good support from Perry Como.

Cloudbusting - Button Factory. I don't normally do tribute acts but this is my second time seeing them. Excellent set of musicians and the singer does an amazing job - so close to sounding like Kate Bush it's scary. Good visuals, great sound - super set list.

NIN 3 words review: WHAT A GIG!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,048 ✭✭✭Dreamweapon

Kim Deal in Vicar St tonight was fine. 90 minute set consisting of the solo album in full followed by some oldies from across her back catalogue. I think there were 10 on stage as she, thankfully, had strings and brass with her. The new album would've sounded a bit odd without the extras. Like PIL the other night there was nothing wrong with it but it didn't excite/move/thrill me. Also like PIL i won't be bothering going to see her again unless at a festival.

Was she crying a couple of times? Looked quite emotional on occasion. Then again she was also beaming for most of it so maybe i saw things completely wrong.

Nah, she was not crying. But she does seem to smile a lot. Nervous energy maybe.

I enjoyed the gig last night. The support band were a great surprise. Madra Salach. And Kim Deal herself delivered exactly what I was expecting and a bit more. She has a good energy on stage and I do like her new stuff. Songs that sound better live than from the studio.

Great to see Gigantic getting played - that was one I was not expecting.

Sawdoctors in Virgin Media Park, Saturday night, Damien Dempsey support.

Venue looked too big for DD. He had a hardcore fan base up the front, but I've seen him in places like Cyprus Avenue where the proximity and intimacy suit him way better.

The Saws rocked the place from start to finish, 21 songs and a 5 song encore. Endeared themselves to the locals by managing to squeeze both "After All" and "The Banks" into the finale, Hay Wrap. I've seen them numerous times across 5 decades and this was easily in the top 3 shows. Michael D himself turned up, albeit a cardboard cut-out! Venue handled entry and exit well, and the "free" Park & Ride car park meant that people got back out without too much delay.

Speed & Drug Church was a bit damp! On arguably the hottest, clammiest night of the year thus far a post/Hardcore double-header in a sold out Whelans was possibly not the best idea. Non stop stage diving and crowd surfing along with the usual moshing and two-stepping. Perhaps the wildest Whelans gig i've attended, certainly up there anyway. Drug Church were first up with their brand of post-hardcore. I find them too melodic and generic Yank alt. but live they were a lot more palatable. Didn't like all of it but felt the set improved as it progressed. There's a definite Pixies influence in there i think. Then it was Speed to headline. They're from Australia and they seemed genuinely delighted to be here. Heavier than Drug Church but with plenty of twists and turns. There was even some flute action on the last song! All done by 10pm too.

This may be angry music but the vibes are 99% positive at these things. Again, the youth were in the majority and plenty of young women there too. I know i keep commenting on the women at gigs thing but when i was that age it was quite a rarity. There'd be a handful but nowhere near as many as you see now. It warms my heart to see these scenes in such rude health.

I was intending to go to Black Flag on Thursday but i mightn't bother as i'm feeling a bit gigged out. What with the return of hot, sunny weather too i feel like getting out and about and soaking up the vitamin D before it disappears again.
