Djoko stretching his leg a lot though - will he actually last 4 sets, or 5?

I only tuned in a couple of games ago, but the pace is ferocious!

2-0 - I'd say that's that now, as brilliant as he is, is can't see Djokovic coming back from 2 down to win.

Sinner then breaks back and serves out set, this looks over tbh.

Musetti stills has problems lasting the pace in a 5-setter, It was like a switch was flicked when Alcaraz won the second set tie-break.

The commentators are already asking if Sinner would last the pace in a 4 and 1/2 hour match with Alcaraz on Sunday. They seem to have written Novak off.

Djkovics time is up as a major winner, and he knows it. In times past, he would have routinely gone for a 15 minute bathroom break if 2-0 down, just to mess with his opponents mind in pure gamesmanship. Not this time. That stick won't work with Sinner this time .

He's still able to beat most of the field in a slam … but as long as Alcaraz and Sinner are there, his chances of winning are slim, and getting slimmer by the year.

Meanwhile, we are treated to the umpteenth shot of Dustin Hoffman,

A lot more competitive than I thought it would be, fair play to Djoko for that. He can't expect to play much better than that though and he didn't take a set off Sinner, he may still be able to beat 95% of the field but it's unlikely we'll see him win a 5 setter against Sinner or Alcaraz again.

Well, it took just over 3 hours, but it had an air of inevitability about it.

I wonder when was the last slam where both singles finals were between the #1 and #2 seeds? I'm sure someone, somewhere on the Internet will find out.

… and someone has: The 2013 US Open: Djokovic vs Nadal, Serena Williams vs Azarenka.

EDIT: Also, the first time since 1984 this has happened at Roland Garros. Someone remind Johnny Mac 😅

Bloody hell. Sabalenka was sailing through this set, yet here we are at 5-5. Not feeling confident 😐

Well, that was a crazy set of tennis, 80 minutes long. At one point it looked as if the match would be over in an hour. Can Sabalenka still lose it from here?

… and Gauff levels. This is beginning to look a lot like their USO final in 2023.

… and it ends like that USO final. Coco wins again, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Sabs hit way too many errors. Coco's game seems to do that to her.

I'm gutted, but Sabalenka was shite. If she learns anything from today hopefully it'll be to stop all the unhinged ranting to her box.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,210 ✭✭✭extra-ordinary_

Yeh the ranting does her no favours and she ends up almost like a spoilt child with nothing going right, but it looked to me she lost this match rather than Gauff winning it. Gauff's only weapon is to get their opponent to hit one more ball?? Every rally I saw she was returning directly to where Sabalenka was standing almost every time, and in the end it was Sabelenka's errors that won Gauff the match.

Definitely a case of Sabalenka losing that final.

But Gauff has lost the plot many times before in finals, so kudos to her for staying rock solid throughout - and her forehand, which can be seriously unreliable when she's under pressure, was amazing.

The difference in demeanour couldn't have been more marked - and you could see which was the more beneficial a mile off! But Sabalenka just ain't a poker face type of gal.

Quite the coincidence that Gauff lost her first match point with baseline ball from Sabalenka that she thought was long - and then a couple of points later Sabalenka lost the match off a Gauff ball that she clearly thought was long.

Delighted with that result, I hope Gauff goes from strength to strength on the back of it.
