I think it's just ineptitude tbh. It's probably an idea of that is very low priority for shell so they can't be bothered sorting it out. Ireland is a tiny market.

From the perspective of Aldi though it's bad PR.

Possibly, unfortunately it apparently doesn't say anything about the chargers being usable

Remember, Shell was required by Dutch courts in 2021 to reduce their emissions. Installing EV charging is notionally one way to do this

I'm sure they'd prefer the chargers worked, but it clearly isn't a priority for them. Instead they're focusing on overturning the court ruling (and recently succeeded 🙄)

I've been trying to get their charge card now for the last 3 months. E-mails go unanswered for months. Aldi completely washed their hands of any involvement.

Has anybody any idea of what's going on?

Two check-ins the last four months in Aldi Dunshaughlin car park. Before that there was a year gap of check-ins. Maybe they fixed them or it's people with a shell card.

    Seems a waste of resources.

I thought I tried both areas maybe not. Lost interest in it now. There enough reliable chargers to be bothered messing with these. I thought they might be useful if stuck somewhere without a lot of chargers.

Tbh IMO not useful if they are hit and miss like that.

It's an oil company, they could literally burn money to heat their offices and still be profitable

Those chargers are nothing but a box ticking exercise, if Aldi or Shell had any interest in EV charging they'd be installing 50kW chargers

Useless. I have their charge card and I have a registered account. Went to use it last week and it said my card was no longer in use. Tried ringing their help line and it takes you around the houses but you never get to speak to anyone.

Infrastructure has to be built and maintained to get supply to those chargers. It could be used for chargers people actually can use.

Aldi are just 100 yards up the road from me so I intended to use their chargers. After about 2 months of back and forth Shell Recharge told me they were no longer taking on new customers in Ireland.
I informed Aldi and they said they had no plans to get a new supplier.

I asked them to put up signs to inform customers of the situation so we wouldn't be wasting our time. I wouldn't hold my breath though. A dreadful service from both companies!!!

Use a third party. I see chargepoint has access @54c/kWh. Plugsurfing is 59c/kWh and it says you can only start session if you have RFID from them.

Sounds a bit like Repsol in Spain. Never saw any of their chargers in use when I was there and the ones I tried wouldn't work because their location service had me miles from the charger I was parked at.

And their app is entirely in Spanish and the charging part is a tiny percentage of the content, so getting the right part is some fun.

These were only good for one reason (IMHO), they kept the ecars and ionity chargers showing as free to use and €8 per session respectively for yonks after the initial charges were changed. Saved me hundreds!

Do you mean I can use the charger which is on Aldi property with Chargepoint?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,328 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Yes, Shell have a roaming agreement with other providers that let's you use other apps to start their chargers

Chargemap is another option although at 67c/kWh then I personally wouldn't bother

On the charge point app & charge map app I do not see at least one Irish Aldis listed on their map. Do you need a charge point branded fob or to scan the barcode?

I think you need to reset the filters. See the link in my post above that's chargepoint and shows Aldi in Santry

New chargers at the Aldi in Roches Street, Limerick. Not showing on any app known to me, not even plugshare. Presume as with previous Aldi chargers it should be Shell Recharge?

I can't see it even on shell recharge. Are you sure they are online?

I got the chargepoint card So I could try the local Aldi which has 10 chargers. I couldn't get it working on 3 of the chargers then gave up.

Someone suggested some of the others work. Some People have checked in on Plugshare as successful after I tried. So I dunno if they had a shell card.

They are definitely installed, not sure about online, I'll take a closer look next time I'm there

I just got a mail saying that Shell Recharge are leaving the Irish market completely on November 6th. I wonder where this leaves Aldi and their unloved chargers.

About time all chargers (including previously installed ones) were required to accept card/contactless/phone or smart watch payment.

If many pay and display carparks can use card/contactless/phone or smart watch payment there's no good reason why chargers can not.

They'll probably sell the chargering network to another provider, maybe EZO or E-Power

Personally I don't even see the point of the Aldi network, most of them seem to be crappy 7kW units completely unsuitable for a supermarket

Am I really going to leave my car in for a whole day? You'd want some happy coincidence of the shop being close to work and no home charging, seems like a very niche market to begin with
