I would keep the squad fairly small.

Boyle, Milne, McCarty, Herring, Bealham, Clarkson, izzy, Henderson, Baird, Aherne, Prendergast, Coombes, McNabney, Kendellen, Casey, Murphy, Prendergast, Crowley, Henshaw, Osbourne, McCloskey, Postlewait, Stockdale, tob, Job, Nash, Bolton, Frawley.

I'd like to see a few others like McCann, Hodnet, Devine, Forde, Josh Murphy, Aungier, Baron, Mangan, Culhane get a look in but 2 games won't give many options.

I'd like to see us add a Ireland vrs Ireland game as a 3rd game.

Duggan, Stewart, Aungier, Murray, Sheridan,NMurray , Penny, Jansen, Doak, Murphy, osbourne Forde, Farrell, Daly, Lowry

    When is the squad announced?

I think this is very close to the actual squad. Georgia is a difficult game and carries major RWC seeding implications if we lose so I don't think it'll be anything other than strongest available.

if it was a selection based on game time then many of the Leinster squad would be at a distinct disadvantage particularly emerging talent with Gunne (21) behind Gibson Park (33) & Luke McGrath (32) a case in point. It’s about picking future talent and getting them young to influence. Gus (21) being a good example when he was in the hot seat by virtue of injuries at the top of the pack, but gaining immeasurably by the experience and solidifying his future with the national team . Same for Sam (22) although I feel he was heaped with pressure too early and fast tracked beyond what was right or fair although his talent will catch up for absolutely sure . Gavin (21) is a real player , same for Postletwaithe (23) great emerging talent in back line which is needed and many will get their chance. But agree this team selection shouldn’t be about gaining experience it’s selection for national squad representation so can’t be taken lightly. Balancing act as usual

Are they ever gonna announce ticket sales for these games?

I know what your saying but usually young three-quarters are moved from 'out-to-in'.

    e.g. D'Arcy or Umaga

D'Orce started at FB but couldn't kick - Moved to Wing but wasn't fast enough- Ella moved him to Centre.

Umaga was a relatively late convert from Wing to Centre.

That's primarily because they didn't have enough 'nous' to play Centre at a young age but had the pace to cover the field as a winger.

Leinster/Ireland are NOW doing the opposite with Osborne! He WAS an established Centre. Primarily At 12.

I used the Frawley example because they've done the same to him. (he'd established himself as a 12 -just not better than Henshaw- after starting off as a 10)

Frawley was never a "Utility back". He's not an Outhalf. He's certainly not a FB. He's a 12. Its taken Leinster AND Ireland the last 3 seasons of mucking about to arrive at the obvious.

\And I don't think they're even finished with poor old Frawley. He's been chopped and changed so much that Its got to the stage that catching the ball for him is an achievement. Confidence is shattered.

Utility backs are rare. And are as rare as hens teeth at international level.

Who is the last "utility back" that played for Ireland? It shouldn't have been Frawley and I hope they aren't going to spend the next 3 seasons messing Osborne about before they realise its not him either.

I thought it was incredibly odd that Farrell threw him in at FB v SA. Yet he did do remarkably well!

Which brings me back to my initial Qs. Who's is the alternative to Keenan?

    …….Clearly Osborne!

Yet I hope he plays 12 in Summer tour and Nov Int!

Thats true. e.g. v SA (although that was out of the blue)

Its not a fine line between "only playing centre" and playing FB, Right Wing, Left Wing, 13 and 12.

Thats too much! And i dont think that's a good thing.

Always liked JOB as a FB. Who are the young lads?

My mind is failing me, but the last few u20s had some decent looking fbs. McErlean and O'Connor looked very good from what I remember.

I fear Frawley has been Paddy Wallace'd. Messed around with out of his best position, and is looking the worse for it. We've been too wedded to the same 3 centres, and haven't given clearly talented lads like Osborne and Frawley game time, despite the poor performances of the incumbents.

Sure. I am fairly on the same page as you regarding Osborne. I would rather see him cement the 12 position.

Frawley I'm wildly ambivalent on because as I said I don't think he was ever good enough to start in any position and he owes his career to being a jack of all trades.

Yeah, Frawley's career has been rescued by his versatility, not ruined by it.

He isn't remotely as good an OH as Ross Byrne, let alone Prendergast, he's not on the same plane of existence as Keenan at FB and he's well behind Henshaw, Ringrose, Barrett and Osborne at centre, probably Tector too. And that's just at Leinster, throw Crowley, Aki, McCloskey, etc into the mix and he's done very well to remain in the Ireland frame IMO.

Struggling to see how we haven't given game time to Osborne. We've literally thrown him in at every opportunity.

It didn't do Ringrose any harm being moved around early in his career in fairness.

Why is Barret being mentioned in an Ireland thread?

Jesus... ye've really lost the run of yerselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭perverseostrich

He wasnt moved around really, he played like 4 games at wing and then was a 13 consistently for his whole career, thats fine it makes sense

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,989 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

In the last twelve months he's been moved to the wing and full back a few times during games.

He's done that a fair bit over his career.

I dont think anyone has a concern with a player having an ancillary position, frawley has no main position very different

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,989 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Frawley needs to get out of Leinster. He'll get a chance to try out-half somewhere else or centre if that's what he wants. He's been messed about for too long.

The writing is in the wall this season if you look at his club minutes v 23/24.

Don't see him going now that RB is leaving & Harry's loan move maybe we'll jump him ahead of Frawley

He's facing 28 yrs of age & would love to see him running the show out west or up north

Cause he's not good enough in any of them.

Frawley has not been screwed around by any stretch of the imagination. He wouldn't have an international career without his versatility. He's the last thing Ulster or Connacht need at 10

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,053 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Crawleys versatility is now his biggest asset. Especially in a 6-2 split

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,068 ✭✭✭50HX

Outside of NIQ he's far superior than Carty,Humphries, Flannery & Murphy

Just because he's not a fit for Leinster doesn't mean he's not good enough for elsewhere...we've aeen it before

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 33,889 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Carty, sure. Ulster are much better off sticking with their young 10s who are already exhibiting better game control than Frawley.

    He's not a particularly good 10.

And we've seen guys who never got a genuine chance at one position flourish when they move to a new team.

Tadhg Beirne would be the most glaring example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,053 ✭✭✭johnh6767

gutted for Munster , they were outstanding against a marginally better team and showed incredible grit determination and strength of character. Away from home against a hostile crowd and with mind games at the fore. Old fashioned Munster conviction. URC the winner .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,068 ✭✭✭50HX

Yeah they showed great character & considering what's gone on this season I think it's a great foundation to build on.

Pity about the antics during the penalties but sure that's them for ya.

If rugby want to keep the integrity it was founded on then this sort of stuff has to be stamped out

    @eagle eye

The Tadgh Beirne who moved to Scarlets and won a Celtic league playing 4,5, 6 and 8... Winning the pro 14 player of the year in the process?

Are you trying to say he never got a genuine chance at one position in leinster ?? 🤣🤣

Or are you arguing that he never got a genuine chance in scarlets, which would be even funnier.
