Anyone else having trouble with their patron subscriber feed? I'm using Pocket Casts and nothing has shown up all week.

    No issues on Spotify.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,772 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

my other ones worked fine this week - but today’s didn’t show up on my members feed, only showing when I search on the free feed.

<edit> never mind, that free one was just a cutdown version of the Thursday Spurs one. I guess the bonus Colin Healy one was really our Friday pod come early.

Looks like Bernie Sanders is in the studio, really looking forward to that.

Sounds like they're still pretending to be independent and non-corporate 😂

Say the Bernie episode will be shelved until Wednesday after what's happened at the Liverpool parade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,817 ✭✭✭✭siblers

It's not referenced on the Bernie Sanders episode. Wonder if they will do a separate episode on what happened in Liverpool

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,594 ✭✭✭The Davestator

I think its being covered enough by all of the news media here and in the UK so I cant imagine what they might add to it aside from getting one of their LFC contributors to come on but probably too soon for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,772 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

from the description of today’s second pod (not listened yet) it seems like they’ll touch on it anyway. Which makes sense — you can’t not talk about it at all. As Dave said above, it’s probably better to leave a more in-depth pod on it til a bit later.

I’d say a few mins of discussion and probably referenced the next time someone who covers Liverpool is on.

Doesn’t sound like terrorism and nobody is dead so I can’t see it being covered in detail tbh. Maybe I’m completely wrong though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭choosetheend

Are they not independent? Legally the company is a corporation I presume, so I suppose technically they are not non-corporate. What are you actually talking about though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,772 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

some people like to complain about them plugging aer lingus, or a hotel they’re staying in on shows abroad once or twice a year, as if that has any baring on their value as an independent media channel.

All that actually matters is that editorial control is theirs alone, which it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭dog_pig

You can choose not to care but it's tough to argue that describing themselves as such isn't inaccurate at best. They're partnered with two national broadcasters and advertise both Irish and international corporations (if you don't want to count Aer Lingus or Dalata, how about Volkswagen Group?).

Didn't they just do a Guinness sponsored event a couple of weeks ago?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,138 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Doing an ad does not mean they're not independent. Doing corporate gigs doesn't mean they're not independent. They're not owned by a parent company telling them what to do. Therefore they're independent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭dog_pig

How come you're completely leaving out the non-corporate part?

You're hardly going to try to say that doing corporate gigs means that they're non-corporate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,251 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

Independent to my mind means that they determine what goes into their show and how it is talked about and AFAIK it's a decision that's made by the SC guys alone. It's a different matter if you're working with RTE or Newstalk and there's a different editorial line taken. (and, as others have said already, the fact that they own the company)

Have they ever explicitly described themselves as "non-corporate"? What does that mean exactly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,041 ✭✭✭Smell the glove

    FFS not this nonsense again.

They are not owned by any parent radio or television station. Therefore they are independent.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,102 Mod ✭✭✭✭GoldFour4

Corporate clearly doesn’t mean they can’t do a gig for Guiness etc. It means that they aren’t controlled by a group of managers and shareholders etc outside of themselves.

They have done work for the Irish Times, RTÉ etc but are not beholden to one organisation. Hence they are independent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭dog_pig

They do work with RTÉ, they’ve had a radio show for years. The idea that they have complete editorial control there is based on what?

They described themselves as exactly that on Monday. In terms of what it means, you’d have to ask them that. Being partnered with and sponsored by international corporations certainly doesn’t suggest “non-corporate”.

What do you expect? BBC style avoiding brand names or disclaimers? "Other hotels are available"

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,772 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

So your evidence that their independent podcast is not independent is from their other work outside of the podcast? They all do work for other organisations — Eoin and Murph for the RTE show, Murph and Ken for the Indo, Eoin for Premier Sports etc, but the work done on this podcast that we're all listening to and subscribed to, is independent with them having total editorial and creative control of it (which is what independent actually means in this industry).

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭Say Your Number

So which team does Ken really support?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 351 ✭✭Appletart Upsetter

I think he used to support Arsenal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,251 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

But RTE etc don't have control over what they discuss on the podcast. The podcast itself is still an independent production?

Getting Bernie Sanders in 2025 is like when Basshunter played a nightclub in Sligo back in college. Hard times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,772 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I dunno… still a massive figure in US politics. Himself and AOC drawing massive crowds across the country. There were ~40,000 people at their event here in LA a few weeks ago. In a party that's all over the shop, he's about the only person (along with his young sidekick) stepping forward and making direct arguments against the sitting government.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭Say Your Number

Especially given Sanders is 83, wouldn't blame him if he said 'f*ck this' and just stayed at home, he still has the drive to try and change things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 561 ✭✭✭Tucker.Tim

Love Bernie and the world would be a better place if Hillary hadn’t kneecapped him nine years ago. But it was, unquestionably, nine years ago. He’s a 83 year-old mouthpiece of the left wing of an out-of-power center right party.

    Next batter up, please.

He's the biggest and most active figure in the opposition right now. I don't see the lads getting any MAGA heads on any time soon, so it's about as big a figure in US politics as is out there for them to get at the moment. Sure it's 9 years since he ran, but it's not like he ever went away, he's one of the few past runners whose kept his presence up. As I said, 40,000 people out to see him here a few weeks ago… Pete Buttigieg, as one of the few others sticking his head above the parapet, got 1800 recently by contrast (and I like Pete, he's good value too).

But also, it's just generally a weird gripe… like, he's around Ireland at the moment, he's an unquestionably big figure whose time is in high demand, he's a very interesting guy, and they nabbed an interview. That's all good.

(imo the Basshunter equivilent would be someone more like John Kerry. Bernie's more like Oasis - past his prime but still very relevant in his own way)
