Armagh B a very good side says Murph, if the boy genius Joyce can’t win that match he may as well hand in his resignation to the press officer after the match.

quiet or you'll get attacked by some posters for not wanting the boys to have a four day week. like we all do sure

When they were on Newstalk the Friday show was mostly highlights, not like them going easy on Friday is anything new.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

I did try but I had to skip that Joseph O'Neill interview. Felt like you needed to have read the book first to appreciate what they were on about

Lads, a book interview after a banger Nations League final and an Ireland game is not acceptable programming

Don’t care if he was Obama’s favourite author of July 2009 or if the book is a novelisation of Ken Early’s footballing career

I wanted to hear more about Ken's audible disdain for Ted Lasso.

Thought they probably gave the final enough time. I'd say they'll leave the rest of broader strokes of the international window (and particularly ireland) for after the second game.

On the novel, I read it last year, really enjoyed.

I love some pretentious bollox as much as anyone, but that book interview was just too much. Would have been a poor Friday pod, let alone a Monday.

Ken is so right about Freed From Desire.

I get Joseph O'Neill's point about when Trump dies someone else will take his place, but would they have the same bizarre, feverish cult like following or would interest in it just die off with Trump.

Yeah, I'm not really sure… but it's scary how much the hatred resonates with people. I've lived in the US since 2011, and the change has just been so huge. I could definitely see it falling away without him as the figurehead, but then at the same time you see something like Scientology (smaller scale of course, though still substantial), where the messianic figure of L. Ron Hubbard got the whole thing moving, but it was actually under the far more corporate and strategic (and incredibly boring) David Miscavige that they had their biggest growth in numbers and wealth. So I'd just worry that the right (or wrong) opportunist might be able to keep it moving, and be even more efficient in doing so, all still using Trumps name.

I think a lot depends on the rest of the republican party, and if they can mount a more 'classic GOP' movement within the party to undermine the crazies.

Suppose as Bernie said, Trump knows his audience too well, they think he cares when in reality he'd push them off the side of a tall building for 5 dollars.

Can only hope there's splinters post Trump and this bizarre cult dies away.

Random tennis podcast > Monday book interview podcast

To be fair, it was an interview bookended by 35 minutes of football. Thought it was a good interview as well.

Tusk, famously, is the Polish PM and not the Polish president as Ken suggested. The Polish journo was taking a shot at the right wing president they elected last week.

    Fanning. Flipping Fanning.

Edit: Fanning going on a 10 minute diatribe about there not being a panel on and of season friendly against the Bourgers and then pretending like Virigin getting the rights to the domestic league that no one watched beforehand and no one still watches is some roaring success is like the Beatles Greatest Hits medley of Second Captains nonsense. It’s impressive in how condensed all this guff is. He’s a cod, Bill.

Edit edit: Snyed is almost as enjoyable as Fanning is insufferable.

I enjoyed today's podcast and agreed with Dion

I really like episodes like today.

More free flowing and it brings out the core groups personalities nicely. Non combatitive Ken is as good as Trinner's "hold the flag" Debating Ken. Both good.

Branno is the tonic the show kinda needed. Him talking about cola today was very funny.

That was David Sneyd, rather than Branno. Sneyd's usually decent enough value when he's on. Enjoyed the pod too.

Dion was a bit of a bore alright though i thought… kept trying to make out that RTE just didn't think anyone'd be watching. Which is obviously not true - they showed the game. I'd say RTE's question was more whether or not there was a public appetite for 30-45 minutes before and after to discuss it. And I'd say they're not wrong in assessing that there probably wasn't. Short of getting absolutely spanked, there just wasn't ever going to be much to say about this one… it doesn't diminish the team to show the game, and have the interviews, without also having a panel trying their best to kill time around it. They'll all be back in studio for the next game.

While I think RTE’s soccer coverage, and sports coverage generally, has gone to the dogs in recent years, the lack of a panel for a meaningless friendly in the middle of June did not merit the level of manufactured rage that Fanning brought to the pod.

Also I thought it slightly ironic that he complained that RTÉ had done nothing to justify its bailout. Presumably the lack of the panel was to save money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭jones

Yeah I honestly didn't get the big deal about the lack of panel for a meaningless game and it really was meaningless. The glory days of rte panels with Giles Dunphy etc are long gone. Didn't really see the drama about it but maybe there was just nothing else to talk about 😔

The emailer saying the WC should be taken from the US when Qatar, Russia and Saudi have got it is wild stuff. America is shítshow but it’s not even close to being the worst.

I foresee the next year being Second Captains contributors hand-wringing about what it ‘means’ that the WC is in the US while absolutely no one really cares. I do expect the climate to have an impact on the numbers willing to travel to it but that hardly stopped Qatar from being a success on its own terms.

They put out Friday's pod a while ago.

Another handy long weekend for the lads, bloody disgrace.

Everyone can say what they want about the ethics of having a world cup in Qatar but the football was absolutely brilliant. A fantastic world cup and the best final since 86.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭Smell the glove

The do two on a Monday so the way I see it, it balances out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,626 ✭✭✭bren2001

The way i see it, the lads can slice and dice their working week as they see fit. Just because they don't record a podcast on Friday, doesnt mean they don't work on Fridays. There's a weird assumption that no podcast recorded = long weekend.

I get my 6 podcasts a week, i don't care what they do outside of that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 888 ✭✭✭cheese sandwich

It’s a proper standalone pod, I don’t mind that it’s out on Thursday rather than Friday.

It’s the lazy cut and paste jobs from their live shows that piss me off

To be fair to them, it was an email by an American actually in the US working in grassroots politics, and the comment was "if football cared about human rights, hosting the tournament would have already been taken from us". Their obvious implication being that football doesn't care about human rights, as we also know from those other examples. I don't think there was any suggestion in the email the US was any worse than Qatar, Russia, Saudi etc, but rather just adding their own current experience as an American doing community work.

What is kinda interesting is in those other cases, the countries use this as a big "come see how wonderful we are, and what a great time you'll have!", whereas the US has gone the other route - border patrol and ICE dickheads doing security at their warmup tournament, and a vice president saying 'yeah, watch some football, then get the fúck out!'

I'm in Los Angeles, and had been half thinking of going to one of the games at the Rose Bowl, few decent ones on there - but with ICE and CBP confirmed to be at all those games too, not a fckin' chance I'm paying into that. It's about as unwelcoming an environment as they could create.
