Car insurance policies in Ireland normally specifically exclude hire cars, it may be possible to buy additional cover with some but I've never seen it as an advertised additional feature.

Car hire companies all issue their own insurance and even for those with policies that cover it they make it difficult to refuse their packaged policy.

Looks like Enterprise Car Club are taking over some of the business.

I think Enterprise actually ran it already for Hyundai?

I could see using a GoCar type service (or conventional rental) plus public transport and a push bike as being a very cost effective transport option.

You just need to be a little bit organised and it helps immensely if you live in a town/city where things are close by.

Living out the country its pretty much essential to have a car but there are ways of owning a car too that don't cost the earth see this thread 👇

I do it, minus the push bike.

It's very cost effective- but you need to live in a suitable place, and be prepared to accept a lack of spontaneity in life. (GoCar is great for less than 4 hours, but quickly gets expensive for longer.)

Sorry to derail (edit) I will need a van shortly for half day or so. I am thinking of GoCar. Can you just sign up and use as you like or do you have to pay a membership fee on top of hire fees? The site lists the hourly /daily fees but the terms and conditions refer to membership fee, without saying what it is

AFAIK there's no membership fee, there was back at the start of the service but they got rid of it.
