FYI, my Boardsie Enhancement Suite extension for desktop browsers allows you to restore the sticky breadcrumbs.

Install from the links in my sig or from the link above, then click the settings 'cog-wheel' in the header, and you can choose to sticky either the header, the breadcrumbs, or both.

Boardsie Enhancement Suite - a browser extension to make using Boards on desktop a better experience (includes full-width display, keyboard shortcuts, dark mode, and more). Now available through your browser's extension store.

    Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/boardsie-enhancement-suite/

    Chrome/Edge/Opera: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/boardsie-enhancement-suit/bbgnmnfagihoohjkofdnofcfmkpdmmce

Genuine question here. This endless jumping on the mobile site - is this something that has been affecting all Vanilla-based sites, or just Boards?

If it's the former, then they'd probably be bankrupt already as such a disrputive flaw, having gone on for so many months, must be catastrophic for business, and if it's the latter, then how has it come about and how can it take so long to fix?

I literally have not seen it before on any other site, ever, so it seems baffling that it's not an easy fix.

Apparently when boards switched to vanilla there were a bunch of modifications/etc applied to make it look like it does now and not default vanilla. And because boards isn't high on the priority list for vanilla to address issues, we get stuck with terrible behaviour for months and months on end.

Vanilla, out of the box, looks something like the link below. You can see a similar style on Boards if you spoof your user agent to a mobile device on a desktop browser.

    https://open.vanillaforums.com/discussion/38343/is-there-any-seo-manager-plugin-or-application-in-vanilla-forum-like-yoast-seo-is-in-wordpress

This style was, not surprisingly, seen as unacceptable to the Boards userbase. A previous attempt to introduce a new design (the "responsive" site) was not taken too well, although in fairness I'd have taken the responsive site over what we have now! Therefore, it was decided to add customisations to Vanilla to try to emulate the default vBulletin theme. The problem is, being a cloud service, Vanilla make regular changes to the backend and these changes can break the customisations that Boards had made. In addition, like the numerous Linux distros that try to emulate the look of Windows, it doesn't take long for you to get past the theming and to realise that the rest of the system is very different.

Digital Spy is the other site I've mentioned before that uses Vanilla, they don't seem to have the same problems as on here. But they're backed by the multinational Hearst group, so probably have more resources to dedicate to it.

What kind of relationship does Boards have with Vanilla? Is it a regular provider/client relationship? Is there a support contract in place? I could be wrong but appearances suggest there is no relationship.

    I don't expect an answer.

It's the same kind of relationship that anyone wanting a cheap flight has with Ryanair and its customer support agents.

I don't think Vanilla hate boards that much 417-4174885_pacman-sticker-pacman-emoji-clipart-676390321.png

If that analogy held the plane would dive into the Irish sea if a passenger flushed the toilet.

Don't tell FR or they'll start charging for using the johns, so much per flush, TP extra. 😅

I understand it is detrimental to the sites survival but u could no longer tolerate the jumping to installed AdGuard. Problem solved. Sorry Boards.ie but you brought it on yourself

I have an ad block but that doesn't stop the jumping for me.

The jumping issue seems to be getting worse - though it's probably just my perception as it seems to affect more and more of the threads I open.

At what point does this become unsustainable. I know Odhran is pretty much an absentee landlord on this site, but how much visibility/awareness/care does he have of issues like this?

Fundamentally it's breaking and discouraging the use of a site he is paying his money to keep going. Surely that's SOME incentive to get it fixed?

It's weird, this approach. A bit sad to see too. Boards was a giant once.

It's honestly hurting my eyes at this stage. Sometimes I just close it as I can't take any more.

If the jumping is caused by Quotes, and if the Quote function is a Boards customisation, that custom code has to be at fault.

I can't believe that such an apparently straightforward function is effectively borking the site.

What's the story? Could a competent programmer be asked to review the faulty code?

A discussion forum without quotes would be not fit for purpose

Again we are left scratching our heads why an entirely unsuitable platform was selected.

If the site had been turned over to the community before the vBulletin migration it'd be in a much healthier state now

This morning I'm getting a privacy notice pop-up every time I go to a new page. It seems to stay there for the same length of time as the bouncing which is happening in the background.

I don't know if it's intentional but it does help the eyes a bit.

Considering Vanilla has been owned by Higher Logic, a US based software outfit for a few years at this stage, I'd wonder how much longer this will actually last. They pulled support for the open source version of Vanilla back in March of this year and seem to be moving ahead with uniting Vanilla with their own product lines.

Also, given the current political situation in the US, should Boards really be hosted as SaaS on a US customer care platform, which is what Vanilla now is.

Whatever filter or block was put in place that drastically reduced the number of Temu spam posts has clearly failed, they're relentless again.

I'm utterly sick of reporting them.

Any chance we could all be given the power to nuke them???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,692 ✭✭✭con747

I asked that yonks ago and was told not a chance so I just gave up reporting spam. The main page was full again after 3am with it.

48 out of 50 posts on the main page are spam right now.

Is there any way to embed a Bluesky post à la Tweets yet?

Had this once last night, and again just now - it happened when I clicked into a thread from the main page, but when I went back and tried again it was fine.

Last night was on mobile, this morning I'm on the laptop.

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
