I know this is a massive late replay but just checked into this thread now. There is also a PAYG diesel only station in Tuam. I drive petrol and was pissed off the night I pulled in there and seen it was diesel only.

Can you please click on the station in the app and click the Report link. It should allow you to submit a change, add Diesel Only to the station name and I'll update it in the app. The station will then be hidden from Petrol users.

    Thanks

You picked me up wrong. I was late replying to the guy who said there are no diesel only pumps which there are. I was just telling him about the one I came across in Tuam one night.

I don't want to drag the thread off topic but I think I said " I have never seen" not "there are no" diesel only stations in Ireland 4 months ago so I am unsure why you dragged that post back up tbh. I think plenty of others pointed out I was mistaken before you.

Long closed Maxol on the Swords Road in Dublin has reopened as Airport Energy and is often a cent or so cheaper than the already relatively cheap local stations. Can't see how to report an update needed for a opening rather than a closing!

Can you please click on the menu in the app and click Add New Fuel Station. It should allow you to enter the station details and drag the pin on the map to it's location. Once done I'll update it in the app. The station will then be added.

    Thanks

    Message on the app…

    Pumphunt is shutting down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 PumpHunt

Yes, PumpHunt is shuting down. For a few reasons.

    1. Not many users are using PumpHunt, partially my fault as there's no IOS app (didn't want to pay €250 fees to post an app on the AppStore). And also that fact it's very low down in Google Searches and Play Store, no one can find my app - unless they already know about it.
    2. Pumps.ie app going down. I was scraping all the fuel price updates from all the Pumps.ie users, on top of PumpHunt submitted prices - which meant there was usually a lot of station price updates. But when the pumps.ie app went down (no new fuel prices), I lost that ability, and now (due to limited PumpHunt users) there is just not enough users to get a decent number of station prices updated.
    3. Many many alternatives popping up. When I created PumpHunt, there was pumps.ie and that was about it. Now there are about 10+ alternatives. Include Waze, pickapump.com, FuelCompare.ie, and a bunch more. So, what market there was for users was further lowered by people using the alternatives.

PumpHunt was a dream, to get the latest fuel station prices to everyone - for free. The idea was good, but the uptake didn't match what was required to make it successful. If there was more interest, I would have made a lot of improvements and features, I would have made an IOS app, and I would have investigated getting the fuel companies involved - to get accurate fuel pricing data. But alas, here we are.

I'll keep the website running for another week or so, so the users all receive the message that it's shutting down. Then I'll disable the website and remove that app from the Play Store.

Thank you all for your assistance with making this app/website work.

So, what are people using instead?

I tried the FuelCompare app. Uninstalled after a couple of hours. Updating is much more manual in terms of interaction with the screen compared to pumphunt. Biggest killer was the ads which were too intrusive (full screen jobs) and too frequent

I think that all fuel stations should publish their prices, and have them made public, then various sites can scrape that info and create their own site/app.

    Just like in Germany/France etc.

    See the likes of www.fuelflash.eu

All petrol stations already submit weekly prices to the CSO , so I don't see what the difficulty would be.

    I agree.

Sorry to see you have to shutter this. I mean this genuinely and not in a patronising way. Well done on creating this and managing it for so long. It’s more than anyone else has done. If IT is your career, something like this is a great feather in your cap.

Shameless self promo, check out PickAPump.com! (I'm biased but…) We're the best, most modern and intuitive fuel app around, plus we're free and cover Ireland, NI and mainland UK.

    Any questions let me know!

Looks good, I'd suggest you should add a section for EV chargers but a good product none the less

How much button presses are needed to update a price? If it's any more than pumphunt had, then the app would be unusable and unsafe for use while driving. I might download it to check but I've a feeling I did already

just what I’ve been looking for , going on a road trip soon and was looking for a way to plot the course as economically as possible. Yes charge points added would be a very good idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 butchy10

We do have eChargers, it just needs to be toggled on. I'll level with you though, needs a little work and updating on the eCharging side but base functionality is there.

Honestly I never got to try pumphunt properly while it was still around so I don't know if it's more of less, but yeah download Pick a Pump and check, I'd love your feedback if you think it's too many

Essentially it's 1: Click on Station, 2: Click 'Update Prices', 3: Enter your prices, 4: Hit submit

Or if you just want to reconfirm current prices: 1: Click on Station, 2: Click 'Resubmit Prices', (prices are auto-filled with current prices) 3: Hit submit

(Also premium members can upload an image of a station price board and we can detect the prices using AI, auto-fills the detected prices, you just hit submit then)

Feel free to leave any comments or feedback, and enjoy the road trip!! (As mentioned above we've got eChargers mapped also :) )

We do have dates on prices when you click onto a station, you can see it here in the green boxes I've drawn over. They're also colour coded green, amber and red based on how recent they are.

    image.png

But also we have a transparency/fading feature which means any stations with prices over ~7 days old will begin to fade on the map - meaning any white/fully opaque stations are likely to be accurate/recent prices.

    image.png

Then also if you're in list view you can see all the dates colour coded too :)

Sorry for all the screenshots - it's just the easiest way to explain. Hope that clears things up!

UI is very cluttered, massive icons with prices cover entire map so impossible to see places names on the map behind them.

Also why not grey out prices that are old? Why should I see what’s not been updated for few months.

Until this is part of Waze or other widely used maps app it will be an inconvenience to use for most people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 butchy10

Thanks for the feedback, that's actually super insightful. I would be fearful to reduce the size of the price markers by much, but maybe slightly. Would a quick feature like a long press on the map to temporarily hide prices so you could see place names better be helpful?

In terms of greyed out prices, we do do that, we reduce their opacity and dull them, maybe I should make that a little more extreme.

Hey if you know anyone at Waze that wants to buy us let me know 🤣

Any talk of something like this for Ireland?

The Fuel Finder Scheme is designed to collect and openly publish near real-time road fuel price data from all UK motor fuel retailers so it can be made accessed by the consumer more easily.

That data is collected by the CSO, all the stations prices are submitted weekly.

There's no reason why we can't do it.

In Germany , ARAL publish their prices on their website, it's constantly updated, as in Germany prices fluctuate throughout the day.

I've seen prices change during the day here too.

After many years of using the Pumps.ie app and then moving onto PumpHunt app, I have just registered with Pick A Pump app, it's a really good app, and well thought out, the station icons showing the brand logo is great, and is propably way more superior to other apps, I found Waze annoying as you had to be either in the forecourt or very near the station to update prices.

With the prices changing so quickly an App like "Pick A Pump" is so useful, however it is frustating when another member updates only one fuel, both fuels need to be updated, I've seen many cases of members only updating say the petrol price and leaving the diesel price blank, this will wipe the existing diesel price that was posted there. Maybe there's a way the app could show the current prices in the edit fields and not empty fields on the update page of the app.

Hi Butchy10, there's a issue with the "Pick A Pump" app. I updated the prices of a local station, and noticed the prices wasn't what I entered… Apparently, the currency on the App is defaulting to GBP, even if the settings in My Account is set to EUR.

So when you enter the price, you need to switch the currency to EUR each time, because if you don't and enter a price for, say diesel at 204.9 and click "Submit Price" the App converts your entry to somthing like 240.2

I'm running the app on a Android device

I've seen a few stations showing the higher 240ish prices, and I'm guessing other people are updating the prices and not spotting that the price isn't what they entered.

I have the currency issue too but also a different problem. I can update diesel and petrol prices but the plus prices are not accepted.
