Everyone I talk to is heading up , great to see it. But worried about the amount of times we get caught with less than 3 up.

3 times in the Offaly match n twice again Dublin. Was a real let off in the dub match where they missed a 2 point free in the second half. I don't expect sam mulroy to be as generous

Half absolutely buzzing, half absolutely bricking it about tomorrow. Jack Flynn back in the team but remains to be seen whether he'll make it. Have seen rumours that Jordan Morris is in the extended squad but I can't see how that'd be possible given how serious his injury was in March.

He's very close to being back I'm reliably told.. Hope it's true

After a great start the ladies finished with Dublin hitting 8 unanswered points. Disappointing.

Jesus, we absolutely sh*t the bed with that! Absolutely dominated the first half but let Louth in for the easiest goals you're likely to see. The third one particularly, our defence just parted. Then when we went four up in the second half, we stopped playing again. Our only score in the last 23 minutes was Costello's goal. Literally couldn't win anything in midfield in the last quarter. Which made our last kickout all the more baffling given we needed possession.

Not sure how it looked on the TV but referee seemed determined to give Louth anything once they hit the deck. Their last two point free to put them back ahead looked soft as anything.

Overall, gutted with the result. Felt with a bit more composure we could have won it. But not to be. Onto the group stages where we've a decent shot at second place if we can pick ourselves up.

i watched it with great intreat as the winners are were to be the number 1 seed in our group ,i wanted to avoid meath because i still think they are the all round better team

i have no doubt that the second half of that game will be debated for the next 12 months up your way because meath never really threatened or took advantage of a number of situations , early in the second half mulroy was rattled and kicked 4 or 5 wides in a row and that was never punished , Mathew costelloe scored a brilliant goal to put Meath back in front and instead of kickstarting things meath seamed to go into retreat

yes i agree from a tv point of view that louth got some soft frees , but the big difference for me in the end was the last 5 minutes , louth controlled the game tag teaming players over and back the half way line allowing fresher players to join into the attack and keep possession for long spells before the ciaran lennon insurance point , for me they looked the better coached side and that turned out to be the difference ,

meath are a young team and i still see them as last 8 material this year

Hoping for another big crowd on Saturday. If even half of those who attended the Louth game came on Saturday, PT would be a sell out. You'd think that there will be a very small Cork crowd so we can definitely make it a hostile home crowd. Also, it'll be 5 weeks since Cork lost their Munster semi-final. Nonetheless, Cork appear to be slight favourites in the bookies. Ronan Jones looks to be out for the rest of the season now. Can't see us risking Jordan Morris again given that he seemed to pull up during his cameo against Louth.

Terribly disappointing season for the hurlers, beaten convincingly by Donegal in Trim. Finished second bottom in the Christy Ring, a competition we had previously won each time we've competed in it since 2016. Mickey Burke also likely played his last game in Meath colours.

Ronan Ryan and Jordan Morris come into the team for tomorrow, replacing Brian O'Halloran and Keith Curtis respectively. Hoping that Morris is fully recovered. Last thing we need is him damaging his knee again and being out for an even longer period. Weather is due to turn so possibly another stiff breeze to contend with.

Is Jones definitely out? I heard 'rumours' he might be back for Roscommon or if not definitely Kerry? hoping for a good crowd too, theres certainly more going tomorrow that there was at the Dublin game. the bigger support will hopefully help! I was at the first round of the league down in Cork, and actually we had so many wides that eve thats why we lost the game I think, and it was first game with new rules, we were all over the place. Really hoping for a win tomorrow. I wonder will Morris actually start…..

Jones had a recurrence of the hamstring injury in training before the Louth game.

I'd be surprised if we see him again this season

Absolutely dreadful performance at times, but very promising that we dug out the win which was the most important thing. By far our lowest total on the scoreboard all season. You could see that the hangover from the Leinster final impacting the first half performance particularly.

Much improved in midfield compared to two weeks ago. Costello is just an absolute class act. He never seems particularly speedy but just seems to glide past players effortlessly. Morris, Rafferty and Menton were excellent as well. Fair play to James Conlon as well, he missed his grandfather's funeral to play today.

But christ almighty, I think it'll take a week for me to dry off after that second half downpour. Reminded me of Westmeath in 2009.

haha, that’s exactly what we said at the end of the game too, mullingar memories!!! Thank feck we won as I’d hate to be leaving drowned and losing! Thought we really upped it in 2nd half and ground out a good win… we really should’ve won by a lot more, so many wides and drop shorts and wrong decisions. Still hopefully that hangover is gone and we get a win against the Rosie’s now. Agreed re Mattie, effortless player, great Morris had a full game and thought Menton was superb. Billy’s kick outs were baffling at times…

I was only telling the kids about Mullingar in 09 on the way home. We got lucky we were down on the concrete seats but whatever way the wind was we got a bit of protection from the worst of it. I more than made up for it last night refereeing in Duleek though. Threw the gear in the wash when I got in and you'd think I was swimming not refereeing!!

On the match I'd agree Costello was class. I thought we were too slow at times and let Cork get set. It was telling that the goal and some of the scores came off Morris injecting pace into the attack and taking on lads. Second half was decent in really poor conditions. Last thing I'll say is I don't know how much of the game the pundits on the Saturday Game watched, they were contrasting Meath's shooting as good versus Cork's. It really wasn't

    The talking points for me:

I can’t help but think Jamie Murphy with his ability off the ground would be a better option at 15 over Frayne. Don’t think we’ll see it at this stage though

Duke shooting confidence has dropped. He missed one against Dublin, two against Louth and another couple against cork. There was moments in the first half where it looked like he just didn’t fancy it anymore more. If Jones was back there is where he’d slot in. Probably won’t be so going to have to persist. At least duke has work rate as base line.

There is evidence to suggest now we might be better without Flynn starting. O’Neill while clearly not a midfielder, is the work horse with a defensive bias that just seems to compliment Mentons inability to be able to get up and down the pitch better. Flynn and Menton are not a great defensive pairing IMO. Without Jones, and Gray still finding his way back (played for Dunshaughlin on Saturday night) we are short here.

Shooting was atrocious, particularly in the first half. Would be interested to see the wide stats and we also kicked at least 2 or 3 shots into the keeper's hands. Also, I could be wrong, but it may have been the first game this season that we've failed to kick a two-pointer.

Frayne had a poor game, without a doubt, but I think it's a bit premature to suggest he's dropped. He's generally very reliable from placed balls and he's been relatively decent from play at times this season as well. Duke's radar does seem to be a bit off as well recently. He was great for long range points but hasn't scored now in the past three games.

I think Hogan's kickouts were very dodgy, particularly early in the first half. I think that was possibly a hangover from the Leinster final given we were obliterated in the second half. Once we started to get a handle on midfield, I felt they were less panicky. Would agree that O'Neill may be in line to replace Flynn. Still surprised we didn't see him in the second half of the Leinster final given the way things went and how he had a decent game against Dublin.

Beat Roscommon on Saturday, and we're through with a free shot against Kerry in the final game. If we lose and Cork then beat Roscommon, it's likely a three way tie for 2nd - 4th, assuming Kerry beat us. We comfortably beat them in the league and, since then, Roscommon have only beaten London and Cork, losing to Monaghan, Cavan, Galway and Kerry and drawing with Westmeath. So we really should be able for them, despite them being slight favourites. Hopefully we've gotten our poor attacking performance out of the way.

Minors beat Monaghan in the Minor B quarter final 3-20 to 3-17. Seems to be a very strong B competition, with Armagh, Donegal and Kildare the other semi finalists. With us losing to Offaly thanks to a late goal and Offaly going on to win Leinster, seems to be a decent enough crop this year.

Didn't even get to hear it on the radio as we'd a communion on. Great to get the win on day 1. Came across this fella on Twitters review, good storytelling way to him.

That was a good watch. Why you'd give up your seat though when the rain was coming! Liked the comment about the kids on the field at half time. I think it's such a brilliant initiative yet it's such a small thing. My two girls went on the pitch during the Offaly and they absolutely loved it!

I think the video captured a moment of contention (for me) at around the 7:30 mark. Cork player took a mark and played on. Donal Keoghan was next to him and tried to get goal side of him without tackling him. The Cork player changes the direction of his run and initiates contact with Keoghan and the referee gave a free to him, saying that Keoghan tackled him while advantage was being played. Thankfully, the Cork player missed the two-point free but thought it was a bizarre decision at the time.

Heard reports of Roscommon players downing tools last week, hopefully they haven't reconciled with management in the meantime!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,607 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Goals utterly killing us again. Conceded two and could have easily conceded at least two more. Hard to know how much of an effect the wind is having. We do have it at our backs but it does seem to be blowing across the pitch.

James Conlon is having a wonderful game. 6 points from him so far.

Where exactly does this leave Meath & Roscommon ?

Good to come away with a draw. Highlights were Ruairi Kinsella and James Conlon. Great to see new lads coming to the fore (Banty around a while acknowledged) versus the league run when these lads were not even featuring.

The worry for me is how goalless and even goal threat-less we are the moment. Never looked like scoring one at any stage yesterday. Without that, we must be a fairly simple team to figure out. It all stems from the fact that we’re just not a fast team IMO. I don’t see fast options on the bench or even the county as a whole at the minute to alleviate this

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,607 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

On the one hand, delighted to escape with a point and guarantee a preliminary quarter final, particularly given all the goal chances we gave up. On the other hand, it was another missed opportunity, like the Louth game, thanks to preventable goals given away. For the first Costello was caught ball watching and let his man have a free run in. The second, Rafferty (I think) naively got the wrong side and let his man turn him easily.

Costello was very poor yesterday. Morris was in and out. Conlon was brilliant in the first half but was marked out of it in the second. Kinsella probably had his best game.

Kickouts are still a major issue. I counted 4 or 5 that went over the sideline (even though some I felt were marked before going out). We were doing well at midfield so I don't understand the need to be trying those pinpoint kickouts.

The lack of goals on our side is definitely worrying, I agree. Four goals in six games is a poor return and at least two of them were due defensive mistakes than individual brilliance.

While it was infuriating that we didn't put the ball dead at the end, it was 100% a free in when we surrounded their defender after the hooter. Referee didn't have the guts to give it.

We're through to the knockouts. If we somehow manage a win against Kerry, we're in the quarter finals. A draw gets us a home draw in the preliminary quarter finals. If we lose and Roscommon win, then it comes down to points difference. We're on +4, Roscommon are on -10.

Kerry in Tullamore on Saturday week at 415pm. Surprisingly close. I was expecting Thurles at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,376 ✭✭✭enricoh

Do the losers play the week after? N the winner of that second v third play a quarter final the week after? Or is there a gap this year, teams were flogged last year taking the scenic route to the quarters.

Will both Kerry n Meath rest lads do ye reckon, or will we have a go at them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,599 ✭✭✭dobman88

Kerry have no option but to rest a few lads. We've a mini injury crisis going on and can't afford any more lads going down with a short season now.

Can't believe Tullamore was picked. It's just over an hour from me in Ashbourne and over 3.5 hours from my house at home.

Wouldn't expect a great game if I'm honest, I think both teams will just try and get through it unscathed

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,607 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

I think Meath will probably take it more seriously than Kerry as there's the outside chance of going straight into the quarter finals. Though I'd say there'll be attention paid to what's happening in Portlaoise. If Cork happen to be winning, we may take the foot off the gas unless we're in with a decent shot at winning ourselves. If Roscommon win, we need to keep the score difference to less than 14 if we lose.

Tullamore is an odd choice, but taking a look, Limerick are home in the Tailteann Cup, Thurles is hosting the Minor hurling semi final that weekend (though that's on the Sunday) so perhaps that affected the choice. We'll take it though. We'll need all the help we can get I feel.

See Tones had a great win in the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta at the weekend. They beat An Tearmann by a point having been 11 points down with 8 minutes to go. Clann na nGael won the junior title.

I'd be going hell for leather for this game! its a great chance to take a scalp and reach quarter finals ( 2 week break, and home advantage against what's going to be a v tough opposition) Not one podcast/article prediction is even considering this game. Everyone has forgotten all about us and all the talk is of Kerry being lucky to have their 2 week rest for the quarter final! Id be rarin to go if I was Robbie and co!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,607 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

If we do happen to come second, I know we can't be drawn against third place from our group in the preliminary quarter final, but can we get drawn against Louth if they come third in their group?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 587 ✭✭✭pipelaser

Cant be drawn against Louth as it was a provincial final pairing. Shame, id take them or Down over anyone else who will realistically qualify at the moment. Clare(if they can beat Louth) would be the dream

Can't see Louth losing to Clare but championship Clare scare me. We always seemed to have enough for them in the league but we scraped by them in the championship in 2019 (our last decent season prior to this) and they beat us in 2022 more comfortably than the scoreline suggested.

Based on that, if we do come second and the final group games go to form, we'd face either Cavan or Galway at home. Cavan on paper would be the easier but Galway wouldn't exactly terrify me the way they've been playing recently.
