That it is being perpetrated by a State that claims itself as a beacon of Democracy in the Middle East is astonishing - and not in a good way.

And you're dead right - that this is happening today means there has been no learning from the last 80 years of man's inhumanity to man.

"Never again" has never sounded so hollow.

You would have to think though that Israel's relationship with the West has been hugely by these actions, they totally overplayed their hand.

As for the online Zionist brigade on social media platforms, they are clearly full blown racists and bigots - their allegiance to their far right ideology is so intense that even innocent civilian's lives are completely dispensable to them (and people wonder how the Holocaust could have happened).

Sean I am truly honoured that you wasted time to read my musings. I'm truly touched. Now you can go back to watching your heroes commit genocide.

The BBC currently have a live news feed on events in Gaza today.

Earlier reports of 14,000 Gazan babies dying in the next 48 hours are explained in more detail below.

This who know about malnutrition in children and its long term effects will be drawn to the statistic mentioned:

"the IPC estimated that nearly 71,000 children under the age of five are expected to be "acutely malnourished" over the next 11 months"

UN gives more detail on statement that 14,000 babies could die in Gaza within 48 hours

Let's return to some news we heard this morning, when the UN's humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher spoke to BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

During the interview, Fletcher said 14,000 babies could die in Gaza in the next 48 hoursif more aid doesn't reach them. Pressed on that figure by the BBC's Anna Foster, Fletcher said it was "utterly chilling".

We've since asked the UN for details on that 14,000 number - to which Jens Laerke, their human rights commission spokesman, provided the following statement:

"We are pointing to the imperative of getting supplies in to save an estimated 14,000 babies suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Gaza, as the IPC partnership [Integrated Food Security Phase Classification] has warned about.

"We need to get the supplies in as soon as possible, ideally within the next 48 hours."

In some analysis released earlier this month, external, the IPC estimated that nearly 71,000 children under the age of five are expected to be "acutely malnourished" over the next 11 months - of which "14,100 cases are expected to be severe".

It's shameful it got so close to babies actually dying of famine before Western countries acted.

Nice to see a post from you instead of just a Thanks in support of some pro-genocide comment.

So two rockets were fired at Israel from Gaza and that's carte blanche for the murder of hundreds of innocent citizens who had absolutely nothing to do with it. Unless of course that you are in agreement with most of the Israeli defenders here and believe that there are no innocents in Gaza.

I'm a father, and have two young girls

A random video popped up on my twitter feed of two young girls being lifted onto a hospital bed about 6/7 months ago. Both were dead, one was very badly mutilated, part of her head above the eyes was missing, the other covered in dust. They were three or four years old, the same age as my two girls.

I genuinely thought I was looking at my young ones bodies for a second, the little things were the spit of them and wore very similar little clothes and jeans and runners. That second or so of dread shook me, hasn't left me and I can't imagine what those who actually lost their children to violence feel like - both Israeli and Palestinian. I haven't been on twitter since.

Before I saw this video, the war was just another news item to me to scroll past. Going from news reports I expect similar will happen to parents exponentially in the coming days (and those without kids obviously). I'll try to stay off my phone as cold as that sounds. There will be sleepless nights for a lot of people as there was for me. And when these people look for answers, they will be met with the same illogical guff, lies and disgraceful slander that I and we have all seen in this thread.

I hope and pray I am wrong, and the pressure mounts, aid gets in and catastrophe is averted and the above will not be the case, but the actions of Israel's allies makes me think this is all going to be late

I think the reason for the sudden reversal is that many humanitarian agencies have said that over 14,000 malnurished children, mostly newborns, would die in the next 5/7 days. Many countries who reluctantly backed Israel, mainly to keep onside with the US, are now afraid to be associated with this Genocidal State hence the many statements of action against it now.

Israerl is really going to suffer and be treated like the Pariah State that it is. This is only the beginning.

14,000 babies born recently, during a war. No mother wants to bring a baby into a world of war. They are trying to care and feed the older kids. Women of Gaza need contraception as a vital medicine.

The Israeli's need to be forced to leave Gaza completely and be required to let in aid freely. It is shameful the West has tolerated this massacre for so long before beginning to put it's foot down. Israel needs to be diplomatically nailed to the cross for what they've done. They need to continually be economically hammered until they change their tune and begin to understand that a Palestinian life has equal merit to an Israeli.

I remember the Ethiopian famine. Shameful to think that Israeli of all countries has caused this.

Let them off the hook and give them a chance to re-arm … and they'd do another 7 October attack. Again, and again, and again.

Who are Hamas, and who are Palestinian civilians in your opinion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,832 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I can't see Hamas ever being able to reform to the extent that they existed in before this war.

Israel has plans to shut down Gaza. Put Palestinians into tightly controlled concentration camps and not allow much movement. Their ability to re-arm will be very limited. I think they have more or less been defeated now as a force. They might still be an idealogy, but can't see them being a milltary force again.

No-one is letting Hamas off the hook. They are terrorists and need to be eliminated.

But the post is correct - Hamas pose no current threat to Israel.

I'll ask but I know you won't respond: How many Israeli civilians have died this year at the hands of Hamas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,607 ✭✭✭thereiver

Some eu country's France the UK and other country's have said they will suspend certain trade agreements unless Israel let's food and medical aid through I read 14000 children may die of stsrvation in the next two days of theres not a large amount of food delivered soon Mothers are going without food to feed their children I cannot think of a time when a western country caused mass starvation through blocking un food aid .this is genocide theres no nice way of saying this it's against un international convention of human rights to punish civilians by starvation and blocking medical aid to women and children

October 7th took years to plan. Security analysts think it might have been three or four years in the planning, not something that was cobbled together a few weeks beforehand (and 9/11 for example had been planned for five years).

Ok well then we will level Gaza until every single Hamas member is dead - dont worry about killing civilians and starving kids to death - they are just collateral damage.

I wish you`d stop defending these actions by the Israeli government and IDF.

    Shame on you.

Have you any sense of humanity left in you.

Unfortunately, 57 children have died of starvation in the last 11 weeks (since the start of the Israeli blockade in early March).

Many many more will die - regardless of the lifting of the aid blockade by Israel.

But also note - Israel is delaying aid getting through to the UN workers in Gaza. As of now, zero aid has been distributed to Gazans.

Western Countries will still be shamed over the deaths of civilians by starvation in the coming weeks - the current pressure on Israel is welcomed, but it is far too late.

    I do.

The shameful list… they really need to be asked what their red line is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,122 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

If Israel controls a buffer between Egypt and Gaza they could probably stop direct arms shipments from Iran and obviously they'll blockade the sea. Put didn't HAMAS cut up pipes largely funded by EU money and use them for short range missiles?

There needs to be a UN organised election after this war eventually stops because HAMAS won an election by a small margin and turned into a dictatorship never to hold an election again. If the people want HAMAS rule to continue we'd all have to respect that but I'd have my doubts they'd win. And because of that I have my doubts they'll ever give up power.

Ireland and Spain asked for this 16 months ago.

"The Dutch proposal mirrors an Irish-Spanish request in February last year that ultimately led to a meeting of the EU-Israel Association Council."

I'll have a dig around for any info on why the 9 opposed the Dutch motion. I'm surprised at Germany - they've recently expressed their outrage at Israel.

Hungary is no surprise at all.

The others may have valid reasons - perhaps they trade heavily with Israel. But I'd imagine it may equally be optics - they will have known a simple majority was enough for the motion to pass. Perhaps they think Israel might give them some sort of pass for their opposition.

Regardless, given Europe's history of conflict and Genocide, any opposition to querying Israel on its human rights record over the last 18 months is despicable.

The amount of vilification Ireland received for calling this from the start is looking all the more ridiculous now. Shame on the EU.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,096 ✭✭✭dmcdona

Re the EU vote to discuss the trade treaty with Israel - Austria did not take the floor to voice opposition and Latvia remained "neutral". I'm guessing both States therefore effectively abstained. Though I don't know if that is a choice in EU votes…

So 15 member states voted in favour - a simple majority.

No current reports on why 10 states opposed.

Interesting that the Dutch, historically strong supporters of Israel, tabled the voted. Seems the demonstrations in The Hague had a part to play. Everyone wore red to signify a "red line".

Perhaps Tony Connolly of RTE will do a follow up report. He's a very good journalist and well worth reading.

If your last sentence is serious, this could be one of the crassest posts in this thread.

But please do elucidate if I've misunderstood your point.

It is imperative that the country we know as Israel is dissolved within the next decade and a new country created which incorporates the lands of current Israel and the Palestinian territories. A new country where every citizen is afforded the same rights before the law whether they be Jew, Palestinian or other. Israel has shown that a two state solution won't work. Their actions in Gaza confirm why. It is an entity riddled with a pathalogical hatred for Palestinians who just happen to be the native people of the land.

If any good can come from the horror the Jewish state is inflicting on Gaza it is that the same state has begun sowing the seeds for it's very implosion. To all those crackpots supporting Israel crack on. The future will show you to have been on the wrong side of history.

This is a good summary from the Beeb on uk events today.

Notably, read to the end to see a comment on Smotrich from the President of the World Jewish Congress - and the response is priceless (not in a good way).
