I hope for less Spock this season. (Not something a trek fan would normally say, I know).

Or Spock but not used as slapstick or sexualally or emotionally conflicted.

Between Peck and Quinto Spock has become the most emotional character in Star Trek.

Thats actually mad, never thought of that.

Re SNW, it's great, enjoyable, and prob the best live action Trek in a long while....but....its not without its flaws, and the gaps between seasons are absolutely shredding any momentum it had for me.

I'm at the risk of sounding like a broken record on this subject, but it's very hard to get invested in characters you only see for ten episodes every couple of years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,053 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

To add further insult to injury, disco was 15 episodes.

And as we established yesterday, it's not really 10 episodes, it's 8 with two wacky ones.

TNG had many wacky episodes (though not to the extent of SNW) over the years but it wasn't a problem in a 22 episode season.

SNW needs to do what Discovery and LD did and boil it down to being about a small few characters and have the rest as side characters like in a sitcom.

SNW really didn't need Uhura and doesn't need Scotty getting added either. I like both Chapel and M'Benga but we probably don't need 2 medical crew as primary characters. Same goes for Pike, No.1 and Spock.

Pike, Spock, La'an and Chapel would be a good tight show especially if you leave out the fan service Spock/Chapel romantic shte.

SNW Definitely does not need Scotty, especially considering they already have that long lived, quirky but interesting engineer whose name I can't remember. I could do without Uhura as well. Leave both Kirks out of it as much as possible.

I thought in S1 that Aenar dude Hemmer was class. Great character. I heard he left for real life medical reasons, but was very interesting to have a blind chief engineer.

Pelia is quirky and weird. Which I like.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

He was a great character! Yes I really liked him. Pelia is who I meant. Yeah, she taught engineering at the Academy, so why the need for another engineer? In the context of the show, obviously they dont have just one engineer, but bringing Scotty in you can assume he's not going just making a cameo, there is going to be some Scotty-centric storyline.

I think it is vulnerable to getting too crowded.

Presuming it's how Scotty develops into the eventual role as chief engineer? Still a young buck at the moment. But i do agree with you. No need to recall the TOS crew. Plenty of good characters at the moment.

Really, really looking forward to more SNW. Although VERY much echoing the posts above in hoping they cut the wackiness down to a minimum and shift a little focus towards the moral dilemma/problem solving/thought provoking style that made Trek what it is in the first place.

These writers have proven they can write brilliant characters - La'an, M'Benga, Chapel - and great episodes - Under the Cloak of War, Ad Astra - so they just need to wind down the 'zaniness' and give actual Science Fiction a chance to breathe. Because they've gotten SO MUCH of this right already in SNW, they just need to keep on it!

Oh no presumeably about it, thats absolutely how it happens. I'm just saying, he is not needed. Strange New Worlds I thought was going to mostly be Strange New Crew as well.

Hopefully the wait between season 3 and 4 will not be as long and the same again with more seasons. Hopefully they get more efficient at making them and how about they give us 4 or 5 more episodes a season too. That would be great. They could afford to do it for that other show which I shall not mention but someone above did saying it had 15 episodes a series.

I sm really looking forward to season 3

I like the “whacky” episodes just as much as any of the others. I don’t want ten of them, but I don’t want ten of any of the others either. Couple of whacky ones in the mix along with the drama and the moral and the horror and the whatever else is absolutely fine, imo.

I certainly don’t see it as “8 real Trek and 2 disposal” or anything like that.

That musical episode was borderline unwatchable for me tbh. I can safely say I'll never, ever, rewatch it.

I loved it and would happily rematch it. I don't there is any episode of SNW so far that I would not rewatch

I like the whacky episodes too. I understand the musical episode being divisive. It worked much better for me on second viewing.

Re: the long wait, it was only a 1 year gap between seasons 1 and 2 in fairness. 2 years this time is mainly due to the writers strike.

The musical episodes is one of the worst episodes in Trek. It's up there with the Disco mirror episodes but even Disco wasn't stupid enough to do a musical episode.

That was a promo and not in the show in fairness to them.

It actually starts out alright as Anthony Rapp can sing (and he has been in "Rent"). But then the others join in 😕

Agreed. I like the wackier episodes too but just one or two. And, I'd say that's what we'll get. The only one I really didn't get onboard with was the musical episode. Seems like every cult show has to have a "once more with feeling" episode from Buffy. But that worked because it was SO out there. And it was not a throwaway episode..... Although I did laugh at the Klingons. Everyone expecting Klingons Opera only to be a boy band.

As for Spock. I do enjoy his arc but, yeah, enough now (although it would be good to see T'Pring back. Holy moly). Love Uhura but we've had enough of her too. The rest of the car are very engaging and likeable so give them a bit more to do

Scotty was in Season 1 of SNW. In a blink-or-you'll-miss-it, Spock and an unnamed engineer with a Scottish accent are fixing the phasers after the Enterprise was crippled. Pike tells Spock to work faster, and said engineer said "I'm just an engineer not a miracle worker".

When the new season comes out, could we petition the mod of this forum, or of the Television forum, to allow discussions for individual episodes? Like back in the days of Lost for example. Some people will be watching week by week, some people like me will binge over a week or two. It would be easier to keep track of individual episodes I think.

I remember that “Scottish engineer” tease but I think when they eventually do introduce Scotty at the end of season two, it’s a different character who wasn’t previously known to Pike or the rest of the crew.

I guess it was a fun idea at the end of season one but they decided not to pursue it at that time.

It’s certainly starting to look like we’ll have a full blown TOS reboot out of this show if it carries on for just a few more seasons. And I’m kinda okay with that too, based on what we’ve seen so far.

So 2 Scottish engineers on the same ship? I think that was the very subtitle tease that Scotty is already there or has been from the start.
