Just seen one of the "vote for Israel" ads on Youtube. I have never seen any other country do this campaigning for a Eurovision entry before. It's ridiculous, it shouldn't be allowed and it's setting a bad precedent because other countries will start having similar campaigns in the future.

France won the press poll by some distance (don't give me hope!).

There is an audience poll coming late tonight based on this evening's dress rehearsal. It will be intriguing to see in what order people in the actual audience rank the big favourites to win.

One of the judges for our song contest was a TV chef. Should tell you everything about how seriously RTE take Eurovision. As long as we have a pre selected 6 songs chosen by the likes of Linda Martin and Louis Walsh, we are going nowhere. Bambi only did well last year because they did their own staging and didn't use the RTE amateurs.

This is a former prison in Vilnius (some of Stranger Things was shot here) where they were having a Eurovision watch party last night, and will do the same on Saturday..

We (& the U.K.) will never have the level of pride/interest in Eurovision than the vast majority of countries that enter have, and that will never change.

Unfortunately it's not that simple. The Eurovision is viewed by almost 2 billion of the 7 billion people on the planet.

Israel are using this massive Worldwide event for propaganda. Think last year 'October Rain'. This year's lyrics have the same tone.

This has always been a political event. It was used to start a revolution in Portugal in 1974. Russia being banned and Israel not clearly shows how political it is. Why is one country let perform while carrying out similar atrocities to another, that's banned?

Make no mistake about it, this singer was picked for very calculated reasons by Israel. She's a good singer. But if 10 others could sing as well, she'd be picked for the back story.

Let me make it clear I don't, in any way condone Hamas activities on October 7 2023.

The Eurovision does not have 2 billion viewers.

Let Russia compete, I wouldn't care. It's a song contest

Listened back to BBC Radio 2’s commentary of both semi-finals from Richie Anderson and Sara Cox (Rylan and Scott Mills cover the final).

They were very funny and worked well together (Anderson usually commentates solo). Didn’t have high hopes initially for Cox, but she was good - taking the mickey out of the contest, but not being too snarky. Falling just the right side of not punching down.

Speaking of radio, did RTE have any live commentary? Usually, it is Shay Byrne and Zbyszek Zalinski.

In fairness the chef was the only one who gave an honest opinion on the show (he did try for Eurovision in the past...and was abysmal) he was still right on Samantha Mumbai.

Louis Walsh did select the fella in 2017 and RTE did put his useless boy band into the national final. But hopefully that is the end of their involvement.

    Totally agree on the rest.

The tv chef was previously part of a boyband, and was shuffled around a few other gigs before he landed where he did and is shoved in our faces 24/7. He is one of the chosen ones, see also Loui, Linda, the DWTS crowd, Tubridy, Kathryn Thomas, Baz etc. Expect to continue to see them at the opening of envelopes on tv/radio/vr/whatever til 2050 at least.

Well look if Dónal Sheehan did take order in the selection previously he’s as much a right as any to be there on the panel. I’ll admit earlier on when he started the TV chef gig I thought me was winging it and was shíte but he’s hung in theee. Nowadays I think he’s good at that.

I d been thinking and I think it’s time we sidelined all our Louis’, Linda’s and even Johnny Logan and Niamh Kavanagh. They are last federation and it’s a bit like asking your grandad what hit hatch electric car to buy.

Let’s look at importing song selection talent. How about looking at the countries who hit the top 5 in the final over the last 4 years, headhunting some people involved there and learning from them. What we’re doing hasn’t worked in nearly 30 years bar Bambie. We need help.

Finland seemingly very good in Jury show...odds look to have improved up to 4th favourite.

My top 5 bet looking decent!

Only heard Finland for the first time last night and got 'winner' vibes off it, should be close to it anyway.

Looking forward to seeing these countries again tomorrow night (in no particular order)…

Sweden, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Malta and San Marino (HEY!!) 🙂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,184 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

If a micro state like San Marino won they'd have to host it in a different country.

Also, does anyone know if Australia were ever to win would they get to host it or does it have to stay in Europe?

The voting system is clearly not fit for purpose, it's literally impossible for Ireland ever to get through a semi, even if Freddy Mercury, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion , Whitney Houston, and Elvis formed a band to represent us, you'd still not get enough votes. Ireland is the rainy edge of Europe, no one is going to vote for Ireland, while every other country has close ties with rest of mainland europe, can't compete with all those millions of people

Can't agree with you at all, it's proven to be much more than just a song contest all through it's history.

Countries are either sanctioned or not. In the mid 80s Dunnes Stores workers went on strike in Dublin because they wouldn't handle Apartheid SA fruit. These Israeli songs are produce of that country, pure propaganda. And we touch them either.

Count in the 2 semis and all the views each country get on YouTube etc and the figures climb. Thousands are still watching Israel's 2024 entry online daily.

I honestly didn't pick the figure out of my arse, some fella mentioned it on Pat Kenny's Newstalk. How many people are reached.

Very hard to read this continuous rubbish whenever we don't qualify. We sent a well-staged, good song literally a year ago and finished 6th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,509 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

Anybody else get the feeling that there’s going to be a few surprises tomorrow night?

That the victory might not come so easy as expected for Sweden?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,789 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

I'm thinking Sweden may not have it now. France, Austria, Switzerland and maybe even Finland and Albania may finish ahead of them in the juries, and even if they win the televote I can't see it being a runaway. It's a hard one to call this year.

Also why would we send a person who doesn't look and sound Irish? That girl may be Irish according to Irish citizenship (whatever that counts for these days), but she's hardly fully Irish. I'm sick of the woke mind virus permeating everything and anything.

Why would other countries vote for an Irish entry sung by someone else? It would be like a German entry being sung by Johnny Logan if he had recently started living in the country and become a citizen there. It just doesn't fit. Samantha Mumba was born in Ireland, had an Irish accent, and would have been a far better choice and been fine as far as I'm concerned despite her African roots.

The voting may make it harder for the Irish entry to do well, but that doesn't mean it's all bollocks. Ireland aren't producing Niamh Kavanaghs and Enyas and Johnny Logans and Linda Martins and they're just getting destroyed by the voting system so that's why we never hear of them again - give your own ear a little more credit than that please.

We came sixth last year - I wonder how many people writing lengthy passionate speeches about it claiming things like we can never get through the semi-finals know that? Mustn't be any when they say we can't get through the semis.

Ah look. EMMYs nationality has nothing to do with it. There has always been swapping of talent across the Eurovision family. An Irish lady was part of Denmark’s winning entry back in the 90s. Actually, it could’ve been Norway. The problem for us wasn’t Emmy. The problem was the song. Now I do like it it’s a reject from Norways contest. They couldn’t get behind it there so I’m not sure how we could. it just tells me that the rest of what we lined up was bad and cast off from a Scandinavian final was the best we could muster this time around.

Norway. Nocturne. Lead to a rule change due to the lack of actual singing, it being a song contest and all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,525 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

I hope France win it...I like the song and the singer...I also think Israel could do very well...there's a huge Jewish support within Europe for them i suspect and the singers back story is also a help...also think Austria have an outside chance

Israel will likely get the same 320 or so televotes they got last year. I think they'll get largely snubbed by the juries again, meaning they won't be in the winner conversation.
