Out of curiosity, how far does the judge's vote go in winning? As in if someone is midtable, would the judge's vote put them over the top assuming it's not an unsurmountable lead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 613 ✭✭✭derb12

the jury vote comes first. It’s the televote that reshuffles things. Considerably.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,291 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

It's 50-50 jury voting and public voting. Normally a song would have to be very high up in both votes to win i.e. perhaps win the jury vote and be top 3 or 4 in the public vote (or vice versa). A midtable song from either vote would have absolutely no chance of winning.

You are forgetting something very important. RTE dont want to win. They don't want to come close to winning it.

Ireland not getting into the final was not incompetence by RTE it was perfectly orchestrated by them to be thus.

I think they would like to be in final, more viewers, mid table respectability so to speak without winning.

But they definitely do not want to win. It's very hard selecting a mediocre song.

They're not being targeted by the Israeli entrant to the Eurovision are they😱😱

The public vote last year had a massive impact if I remember right

Ah right, I'm seeing a lot of takes that the UK could do well with the jury, but obviously means nothing if they won't get the people's vote.

The UK definitely won’t make it. The harmonies are great with the girls but it was hugely obvious they were using a backing track with included vocals in places last night. It just seemed a bit ‘off’ to me.

I will be very surprised if UK does well in people's vote. For me it's the epitome of forgettable. Not to sound too dismissive, but it will kind of be break time for me if I need one for toilet or refill of snacks/drinks.

The opportunity for Uk was there last year with Olly, but they read the room incorrectly...

I made a promise to only talk about the music when it comes to Israel on this thread.

So I can now say how radioactively bland and uninspiring ‘New Day Will Rise’ is.

Just like Eden Golan’s ‘Hurricane’ last year, every beat is as predictable as an ‘X-Factor’ winning song - soft intro, slow piano, build up in second verse, bit of oomph in the second chorus, vocal range show-off at the middle eight, key change, shower of sparks.

Judged PURELY ON THE MUSIC, I would never put this through in a million years.

He also has a tone that says he has no interest in what he's looking at and it's beneath him.

Like an uncle at his nieces 16 yo birthday party who's down with the kids

He is still in that mode from 20 years ago when we were sniggering at the wacky Eastern entries thinking it was a phase.

Time to bring in someone who actually gets and appreciates what the show is now. Although we don't need some super fan cheerleader either.

Yeah I know, not one for Eurovision.

    Roll on NIN in June!

Just someone who enjoy a few drinks and watch the show 😀

Well yes, it accounts for 50% of the total votes and is announced at the end.

The problem I have with Israel's entry is that it's a propaganda piece. The second in a row. The amout of advertising Israel are doing around the world demonstrates it's purpose.

I'm not taking away from the ordeal the contestant went through but there should be rules against this stuff. It's cynical.

I think that some posters here are upset that he spoke about the Israeli contestant being a survivor of the barbaric Hamas attack on Israel.
Ireland is fanatically pro Hamas and Oct 7 was not a good look so the easiest thing to do is never ever allow it to be mentioned ever again.
That’s the problem with being over on the Left.
You have to constantly ignore history, facts and even biology in order to make your argument.
So Marty isn’t toeing the party line.

Tbh, I never really pay attention to what any of the songs are actually about, apart from that Australian one, I think I know what that was about 😁……

If tge Israeli singer survived that attack, that’s great. I think we in Ireland are predisposed to be pro Palestine by reason of our own history. The unfortunate thing as shown by our own history is that barbaric acts happen in situations where territory is at question and on both sides.

Sending a survivor if the attack to Eurovision however is pure propaganda. We have the luxury of being pro Palestine here because the UK, deemed to be our aggressor was generally interested in dialogue despite some horrific incidents on their soil. What they didn’t do is raze our country, invade more and more day by day, starve us and seek to erase us from the face of the earth.

So, yes, I’m delighted the Israeli artist survived the attacks. They should show better judgement however than being allowed to be used as a propaganda piece by the Israeli government. The EBU have a case to answer here. The dogs in the street know what the song is about and the overall meaning implied. .

Based on what I've read (and I'm so far away from an expert it's silly) you'd be looking at 200+ jury points to have a chance to win basically. Then from there the higher above 200 the less impact of the public's vote; Low 200s and you'd need to win the public vote to stand a chance.

He is of the same generation as Joe Duffy. Both have a history of sniggering at "foreign" accents.

It's not that long ago that "Chinaman" jokes were a staple on Liveline's Funny Friday - with the host tittering along.

And I STILL hear Marty play the song "Goodness Gracious Me" on Lyric from time to time. That's the one where Peter Sellars impersonates a South Asian doctor.

Probably not a great look in this day and age.

    No you’re not ! I love Marty.

I thought the milkshake man was great and he should have qualified for the final. Next year we should send the spicebag man with his own totally bonkers but brilliant song about them. We can only improve on our current performances.

Mod - we're not going to have a repeat of last year where there were over 100 reported posts because things got out of hand. Concentrate on the song contest, not the conflict in the Middle East.

It could be a year when Europe is not in the mood for a silly song. Could explain why Australia and Ireland were beaten by bland run of the mill songs.

The Irish song wasn't very good. For Ireland to move forward in the competition it has to stand out. Samantha Mumba would have been better to send as she's well known, much like Jedward (though I don't know how well in Europe) but I know many in America and Canada know who she is.

You need a big song, with big production, it doesn't have to be novelty. But it has to make an impact. I don't think Bambi Thug was going to win, but I knew she'd do well. That's largely because it was different and knew the audience.

They have to move away from TLLS eurosongs. Even if for entertainment here at home.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car
