Don't think you'll have much to fear from Ruane or O'Connor. Ruane doesn't know how to field a ball and O'Connor looks to be injured again. O'Shea might cause ye problems, fair enough. But overall there's nothing to fear with this current Mayo team imo, they're not a mentally strong side.

Yes, I’m sure when they are completing their statistical analysis ahead of the game, they’ll seek out the data from our 1952 All Ireland win!

Here’s a question. Would you trade one of our All Irelands to be involved in all the big games Mayo have been since, say, ‘95? 30 years. They haven’t won an AI but lots of days out. Ours have been few and far between.

Why though? I imagine the majority here were not alive for any of the All Ireland wins. We had a great day in ‘97 in Croke Park. I’d love more of those days. Even Fermanagh have probably had more decent days out in Croker than us in the last 30 years.

I live in a county with pretty much no football heritage (3 connachts ever, no where near an all ireland). Our history shows what is possible, even in a small county. I think the heritage is very important. As for Mayo, you have to admire their supporters who keep coming out even after the most terribly disappointing results on the big stage. Anyway, its irrelevant as none of us can change the past.

Its a shame Cavan have so many injury issues as I think Mayo could be got at. McStay now 3 years in and no Connacht, losing to Galway despite no Walsh or Comer, being level with 10 to go with a big wind and they still found a way to lose it. Players have to be losing faith in him, I know the supporters are. Unfortunately, I cannot see us pull it off unless we see a massive upturn in performance - but there is no evidence to support such a thing. I can see us getting wiped out on kickouts again unless we have really worked hard on that during the break.

The only bit of hope I have is that we cannot possibly be as passive as we were against Mayo last year. That first half was like a bad challenge game. I have a couple of friends from Mayo and after we pushed Tyrone to extra time they were worried that we might pull off a shock. After 5 minutes in Castlebar they knew they didn't need to worry.

Mayo will rightly come into this game thinking we are no great shakes and could well have their eye on the Tyrone game (which will be crucial for them) and could (eternal optimist here) be caught on the hop by a team flying out of the blocks. I would give us more than a fighting chance if we had a fully fit panel but with no Gearoid and James Smith, it doesn't look likely.

What I do want to see is us being in the game for the full 70 minutes and not some scores tacked on in the last 10 when Mayo run the bench and the game has been over since half time.

Has anyone any good news emanating from the Cavan training sessions and challenge matches to give us supporters in the West some hope/confidence that we will see a be improvement on the corresponding match against Mayo in 2024 ? I believe Jayo McLoughlin should be given the man marking job on the free scoring Ryan O'Donoghue and put Killian Brady ( The Gunner) on Aidan O'Shea. If both are fit start I would place P. Faulkner and K. Clarke in midfield however not sure they both would last 70 mins , then the question is who are the replacements ?

Just watched the Louth v Dublin minor game this evening..

To summarize, that's Louth in a Minor, 21 and senior final this year with a great chance of winning all 3.

That's just a few years after engaging an ambitious and intelligent chairman to oversee everything with a view to appointing the best in class in every position and department.

They now reap the rewards - while the brain power within Cavan gaa let the same clowns play musical chairs inside

Enough is enough.. time to be ambitious again.

Couldn't be much worse than what's happening at the moment bacon sambo.

All joking aside, I don't think it takes much to turn the screw. It's a matter of getting the right people in the right places.. ie just look Duignan in Offaly, Colm Fitch in Louth etc .

Do we have them type of characters? I wouldn't be sure.

It all sounds great but it isn't really. Leinster football is not all that great. It would be my opinion that if Louth was in Ulster they wouldn't get to a semi-final. They are improving though and I attend a lot of their games. You can only beat what's in front of you but I don't envisage seeing them at the business end of the summer.

What annoys me is we clearly stalled compared to other counties. Back in 2016, we beat Galway in a huge League game. Look at their progress since. Two All Ireland finals.

2019 we beat Armagh. They’ve an actual All Ireland since.

Graham was good for two years but you have to look at McGleenan & Galligan and ask did we back the players by getting top management. I don’t think we did.

Colm O’Rourke won a Tailteann but got his marching orders. Graham wasted 4 League years of an aging team with the relegations.

Look at the effect Mickey Harte has had in the counties he went to. Different people were approached but you have to make them an offer they can’t refuse.

The minors found themselves 4 points down and a man down with 20 minutes left today and won by 6 in a sweltering Breffni Park.

Jake Brady and McConnell were the two key men. It's still difficult to see why McConnell is being wasted in goals when he's clearly capable of dominating the midfield.

It's been a while since we got to a minor semi final so credit to the players and management.

Two decent minor sides in a row, hopefully the right appointment can be made at U20 level now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,350 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Good win for the minors. 8 points to 3 down about 5 minutes into the second half and they ended up winning 1-13 to 10 after having a man sent off.

The keeper McConnell came outfield and sub keeper came on second half. He’s some player. Jake Brady from Gowna got the goal.

Cavan comfortable in the end and ran the bench. Should have had another goal but in fairness the sub was just on.

Down horribly negative. Deserved no better than to lose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 hatefulrory

Why do you think they are persisting with McConnell in goals? His kickouts don't look to be key to Cavan's game, we lost a huge amount of our kickouts and the sub keeper did fine when he came in. Two games in a row now he's come out of goals and turned the tide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,350 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

I don’t want to say too much critical on here about the minors because you get people accusing you of attacking kids if you make certain points. I was accused of attacking the management because I made a factual assertion that they are inexperienced.

All I know re the keeper situation is that the second keeper was given his chance in challenge games earlier in the year. He barely had to touch the ball today so not sure how you can say he “did fine”. Down only got two points after he came on. The ball wasn’t down that end much once we took hold of the game.

Cavan did have a strong wind in the second half too which helped. You could see it in the flags.

What did you make of the Westmeath manager being hugely vocal to the team from in front of the uncovered seated area on the town side? I could hear more direction he was giving them than I could hear from the management team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 hatefulrory

You said the sub keeper is minor next year too, so they've identified him as the second best keeper in the county over 2 age groups. He's been deemed good enough to play in championship twice, sub keepers usually dont see any game time. It's fair to infer that he's talented.

Even if they're not happy enough with his performances to start him, I still don't see how the solution is to put probably the most athletically gifted player and one of your best scoregetters on the panel in goals instead.

They're winning games though which is the answer too all questions we can put their way!

I wasn't near our GDM. I would presume management wouldn't be happy with that though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,350 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

You inferred that he was “talented” based on that he “did fine” today. You’re now changing the point because I correctly pointed out that he was in no way tested today. Not the young lad’s fault, just the facts of the matter.

I have a knowledge of this age group from watching club matches but I’m not going to get into debating the U16 and minor goalkeepers of the county.

The 16s panel (then 15s) reached the final of a comp last year and a different keeper played so not sure when and how the pecking order from that group changed.

The part of your post “even if they’re not happy enough with his performances to start him, I still don’t see how the solution is…”. What other alternative is available to them? You had mentioned yourself that the sub keeper is the next best over two age groups apparently (although as said above, he wasn’t the first first choice keeper for his own dev panel last year). Therefore they have a choice of two and their choice to date has been McConnell and bring him out when they feel he’s needed. They don’t appear to have extensive options.

You also brought this topic up after the Derry game and it was replied to then so not sure if you’ve perhaps a vested interest in the matter that you’re revisiting it.

You couldn’t have missed the Westmeath manager if you were anywhere in the stand. It’s not easy to miss a six foot plus man roaring across a railing. He was quite animated hopping up and down as well and running along the railing.

I was asking as you seem to know a bit about the team so I suppose I was more asking if you think there's a tactical reason behind the decision. Do they want to keep his legs fresh for free kicks, do they think his kickouts give us so much that it's worth sacrificing him outfield etc. You have said you think it's personnel so fair enough. I have no vested interest in McConnell at all bar wanting to see him in his best position and I find it an interesting talking point.

I didn't notice McCabe's antics. It's good to see the GDM invested I suppose but if he was giving instructions to the players that is probably crossing the line.

Just watched back Paul Brady v David Walsh. What an incredible game and finish, Brady really was a special athlete. Hopefully with his playing days almost behind him, he might get involved with club and county underage. You'd imagine he would have a lot to offer in terms of mindset and preparation.

It is the first time I heard Handball on the radio. Commentary on Northern Sound.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,187 ✭✭✭cavan4sam

I watched the handball live yesterday Brady really is a legend and deserved the victory thoroughly I thought it was going to end like last year with his injury

Hard not to feel sorry for the cork kid as he couldn't really build any momentum with the stop start nature of the final game

Good win for the minors they're a decent outfit and hopefully they can give Donegal a good rattle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,350 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

You already asked the question after the Derry game though and it was answered with my opinion - he’s the best in the position that they have is what I understand and they feel he’s needed there. I’m not sure it’s McConnell you have the interest in.

The next minor game is next Saturday evening in Breffni at 7 so you would hope a big crowd will attend to see them play a Donegal team they are capable of beating.

I certainly have a lot more interest in that game than driving to Mayo on Sunday. It’s a terrible time for that game. A long drive to Mayo and home with work the next day.

Does anyone know if the minor game will be streamed? Do Cavstream or Clubber do any of the later stage county minor games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,187 ✭✭✭cavan4sam

Most likely on tg4 you tube

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 hatefulrory

Thanks, won't make it. I'd imagine if the weather is decent it could get a half decent crowd. Particularly with the Mayo game being a fairly unappealing fixture as Cavan King says.

Amazing to see Louth win the Leinster Final after putting in the proper people and structures. While the standard is not as good as it is in Ulster (imo) they made the Leinster Finals in three grades and have 2 won already.

They lost to Cavan in the league but Championship football is different to league football. Their eyes were set on this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,350 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Your last paragraph is incorrect IMO. They had targeted the Cavan game to try and take points. There was even mention by a podcaster from there that they had not risked players against Roscommon, I think it was, in a previous game.

I thought Louth were very poor in that League game. I didn’t expect them to win another point. Meath were very open on Sunday. The third goal beggared belief. He ran straight down the middle.

They didn't risk their All Star and several others against Cavan either. I think there was 5 players from last Sunday missing from the Cavan league match.
