Ok but that loss was on the players not the coaches. They missed the tackles that scored the Saints tries. Some absolute shockers not acceptable at this level of rugby

Ringrose might be good enough, I'm not sure any of the others will be though.

Hats off to NH - they relished being underdogs and had a game plan to beat Leinster and delivered.

But Leinster did not help themselves -

    • Undercooked - the team should have played together in the last 4 weeks. Wrapping in cotton wool does not work and Leinster have a big enough squad in case of injuries.
    • Not picking Barrett was a mistake. Furlong is not the player he was either. Should he have started? Also, why Healy?
    • SP is not yet ready (will he ever be?) - aside from his defence, there were aimless kicks, he lacks pace (slower than Porter), he is not an individual attacking threat and his goal kicking was not up to scratch. Is this why they didn’t opt for three points to level it up?
    • I don’t see how Cullen can survive this. Despite resources upon resources the same mistakes are being made.
    • The Leinster rugby media do you no favors. They act like super optimistic fans and are dismissive of the opposition. Did they even watch NH this season?

Pity that an Irish team will not be European champions again this year.

Yea ringrose will only be 32 but there are a lot of miles on that clock, his defeanse is very good but let’s be honest he isn’t making line breaks like he was years ago.

He’ll be fine, this is just a case of Ireland/Leinster not getting the best out of him just like with most of the Irish squad this season it seems.

The Barrett non-selection is obviously the biggest talking point, but starting Cian Healy deserves to be discussed as well. He has played better than I thought he was capable of at this stage if his career, but it's clear that he offers little in the more open games. He was so poor yesterday in a game where we needed impact and physicality.

Jack Boyle is still very inexperienced, but has performed well whenever called upon for province and country. And was one of the few Leinster players to perform well against Scarlets last weekend. He needs to be given all the minutes that would have went to Healy over the next few weeks. He offers a lot more in the carry and in defence now.

This game has highlighted an issue with Sam as well.

He has no versatility to play anywhere outside of 10. It means you have to put another 10 on the bench, because you can’t move him anywhere else to cover.

I thought they should have put Barrett at 10 when he came on, but they couldn’t because prendergast or Byrne couldn’t go anywhere else.

Jack Boyle put his hand up last week and said pick me, I'm a guy who will run through brick walls when things aren't going our way. He was our best player on the pitch last week and he played less than a half. I really can't understand how we have managed that lad this year.

Instead we picked Cian Healy because of Experience. We may aswell have been fielding a centre partnership of O'Driscoll and D'arcy for the first 20 minutes.

    Indeed.

That defensive system needs constant work IMHO. Maybe if the coaches selected a settled team these last couple of weeks Leinster would not have lost 2 in a row.

Pendergast has no pace, can't tackle and makes very few line breaks. He great kicker and good passer. But you cant learn pace. He very slow. And when he bulks up he be even slower

Continuing to select a 38 year old Healy over Boyle just sums up everything that’s wrong with the mentality of Irish rugby, too scared to move on clearly past it players.

Like I said previously, no other major rugby nation would have Healy over Boyle.

For the first yellow card period, it was 7-7 and for the second period it was 7-0 to Leinster.

To have twenty minutes with an extra man and only net seven more points is criminal.

One of many galling errors yesterday alongside squad selection, overconfidence and decision making.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,199 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

    That and idiotic decisions.

    76mins TAKE YOUR POINTS.

Deserving to lose for that alone.

Northampton exposed the Leinster defence so easily they could have walked a few tries in. Nienaber has to go.

Congratulations to Northampton they fully deserved to win.

Milne showed in One game for Munster more than Healy has shown in 24 months.

you have to give youth its opportunity in rugby.

Find the next pollock instead of donating caps to players that should be long retired

It’s one of many gripes I have had with selection at Leinster.
There is enough evidence and lack of success to suggest that Leinster are not good selectors and game planners.

Leo Cullen has been around long enough now to shoulder the blame.

Unfortunately I think change is needed. Again I think Nienaber has to go. It’s not working.

    It just hasn’t worked.

Still can't get over the complacency of leaving Barrett on the bench. Mind boggling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭letsbefair

My problem is that team should have had a warm up game last week. They were not ready for the intensity, leading to too many basic errors, knock ons, missed tackles, shite line out. Not battle hardened

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,454 ✭✭✭A-Train

Today doesn’t feel any better. Just so frustrated with the same failings being repeated over and over again year after year and nothing changing. From wrapping players in cotten wool, to not selecting the strongest 15, to relying on players that are past it, to wrong decisions and lack of leadership on the pitch.

I can’t see what changes next season when it will be the same team as this year minus Barrett. At this stage they will never win in Europe, just a new a Clermont. Something has to change. It will be accused of a reactionary post but the last 4 years and the same failings.

I’m still in utter disbelief about the decision to go to the corner with 4 minutes to go.

While it was a dreadful performance all round, they still should have come through it - they were the better team in the second half especially with the subs on, would have fancied them to squeak though in extra time.

Serious questions will be asked of Leo and rightly so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,404 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

If you look back at the clip, Conan looks completely bewildered about whether to go for the posts or the corner. As a huge Conan fan, it was so disappointing to see that he didn't have the nous to realise what needed to be done.

It felt like we had the momentum that if we have taken the three, we'd have gotten the ball back and had a few minutes to run the ball back at them and then tried to win the game.

Well i won't be adding much to what hasn't already been written since the game kicked off but yes, I was at the game too. While it was (likely) a great game for neutrals and the rugby world, I couldnt believe what i was watching. How different the team performed vs. The game against the Warriors and that inability to adapt, take your points and be strategic rather than panic was on show once more. It's somewhat excusable in last years final given the opposition.

I hate to say this but it must be time to move on to a new coaching ticket. This isn't working and the whole 2-3 weeks were a sh*tshow beginning with the ticket price gouging.

P.S Credit to NH, they were absolutely worth their victory, but this was basically like Japan beating South Africa in the WC (given the line-ups)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 817 ✭✭✭no.8

I wanted to add as well that imho they need to start sending the 1st team on these South African tours. There are simply not enough challenging fixtures prior to the 1/4's or 1/2's for the starters and the SA tests are just that.

The team that played and won in SA this season probably would have done as good a job yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,846 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

probably not allowed due to player management protocols.

Some of the reason for this loss is Leinster are victims of their own success, that team has a 6 nations in their legs already and that took its toll

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭letsbefair

Bottom line is we have to win the URC now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,846 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

Yeah, that was the moment the game was lost for me - Leinster had the momentum , playing against 14, with a strong home cowd, would have expected proper leadership from Conan - but when Doris went off , no one stood up , reminded me of the lack of leaership against Argentina at WC '15

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,010 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

He actually does have a bit of pace when he gets into his stride and gets his spindly legs moving. We've seen him go through gaps and run in tries from distance. His problem is he is very slow off the mark. Has no explosiveness from a standing start. Hence Pollock just ran around him with ease.

FFS Northampton players have played more minutes this season that Leinster

    They didn't look tired

Leinster's look tired from seating on their arses for the last 3 weeks

It’s a hell of a lot better than getting one of the best players in the world and still winning nothing.
