It's your responsibility to pay it.

Indeed, unfortunately Fed Ex can be a bit hit or miss with informing the recipient of customs charges prior to deliver or in a timely manner afterwards. I once received an invoice from them for customs charges 6 months after delivery…

Hi guys, hopefully someone can advise me, I have a small online retail business along with my regular dayjob, we're currently well under the VAT treshold.

We have sourced from wholesalers in Europe and in Northern Ireland, recently I have been introduced to a wholesaler in the UK offering better discounts etc and am keen to add them as a supplier understanding there are other costs to be taken into account, problem is I don't have a VAT or EORI number (I can register no prob), most or our orders are around €500 ish, 3-5 times through the year, my question is should I register or is there a better way - I think some carriers can provide the service; what do you think? Also, what obligations does having one carry? All advice gratefully received.

I recently bought a couple of t-shirts from Japan, they cost me €200 for the pair. I just got an email from DHL telling me that I'll need to pay €114.76 to receive the items. That seems very excessive. Here is the breakdown:

    Import Export Taxes (TX) €68.40
    Import Export Duties (DT) €31.86
    Duty Tax Processing (AV) €14.50
    Total Payable (incl. VAT) €114.76

look at the first post in this thread. It looks about right at first glance

I was expecting something similar to the following

    Tax - Rates of 23.00% €46.00
    Duties - Rates of 12.00% €24.00
    Total €70.00

Vat is paid on the total plus duty, the exchange rate that customs use to calculate the fees is also quite a bit lower than your bank or Revolut(currently ¥163/€1) which would easily put it up as high as listed. It doesn't help that DHLs clearance fees are extremely high as well.

I think their admin fee is €14.50 which is alot

Not the worst though, UPS charge €17.70 plus 23% VAT for their clearance fee.

It was from Japan but in US dollars, so $218 plus $34 shipping.

I reached out to DHL and they mailed me back just there, this was there breakdown:

    Total value of the goods = 218 USD + freight 65.45EUR = 265.505EUR

    Duty @12% = 31.86 EUR

    VAT = 31.86 + 265.51 x 23% = 68.40 EUR

    Admin fee = 14.50 EUR

I may very well be out of the loop but have things changed in regards to buying cheap Chinese bits and pieces? I bought a pair of feet for my keyboard from Aliexpress for less than €5. Got a customs notice this morning for €1 something in Vat and just shy of €5 in the admin fee. Quite hilarious that the fees cost more than the item.

Yes, well behind the times. Lower limit for VAT was abolished in 2021. Good thing it wasn't UPS or FedEx, their clearance/admin for is €15-€18.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

I thought the big Chinese sites were now including duty and VAT in their final price.

Ali use IOSS though so sounds more like an error (either by An Post or Ali coded it wrong).

OP check does your order include a footnote that VAT is included.

Good luck persuading An Post they got it wrong though.

Looks like An Post are increasing their customs admin fee again on September 5th to €5.95 as per an AddressPal email.

Mod: First post on this thread. I have moved your thread on to it. Importing alcohol by post usually results in seizure, sometimes they may allow one bottle through, usually on a one off basis.

Addresspal charges for handling vat went up again.

    “Roll it back”

AddressPal charge the same fee as the normal An Post clearance fee. It'll be going up for all packages processed by An Post.

Hi All, last week I bought a replacement part for a coffee machine from DeLonghi (seems like Screwfix do their spare parts) and on their website and order confirmation email, it says:

"Registered in England, No. 03593012, VAT Number GB 232 5555 75 in Great Britain, IE 415 376 1TH in the Republic of Ireland and FR 319 5211 7539 in France."

but then this morning, I get an email from An Post:

    Customs Charges to be Paid:
    Import Duty = 0.00
    Excise Duty 0.00
    VAT = 1.30
    Admin Fee = 4.95
    Total = 6.25
To be paid by 22 Sep 2025

It's obviously a fairly small amount so I'll probably just pay it but where is the problem arising here? Is it that the vendor hasn't supplied the correct paperwork or something on the An Post end? I've emailed DeLonghi querying it

Not sure what the confusion is. You had an item sent from outside the EU. vat is due on imports from outside the EU. some sellers take the vat upfront and do the paperwork. Amazon, for instance, do this. De longhi must not. Probably because they don't have the volume to justify it.

While it appears it may be coming from England there are also Irish + French VAT numbers listed so it would be reasonable to expect that an agent in the UK for an EU company would at least be applying IOSS.

if they didnt specify that customs are covered then dont expect customs to be covered.

I got in contact with Delonghi and received the following:

    Good Morning,

    Thank you for your email.

We apologies for the inconvenience. We do not expect our customers to cover the customs charge

Could you kindly provide us with a copy of the paid customs receipt. Additionally, we would appreciate it if you could provide the following details:

         Name on the Account?
    Name of the bank?
    IBAN Number ?
    Swift/BIC Number?

Once the details have been received these will be submitted to the Accounts Team to action at the earliest convenience.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Customer Service Team

    Kind Regards

Hi guys, bit off topic but does anyone know of any company that would have an alcohol distributors license?

it’s for a potential business venture but I want to start small (but do it right) don’t want to have to take one out if it doesn’t go well.

I’ve tried emailing the big distributors but they seem to big to even reply to me.

    Any input greatly appreciated.
