If the Taric is correct then add 23% on to the value plus the cost of shipping. With a value like that, I'd be double checking with customs, though.

    Hi all,

I've purchased a used video game console from Japan for €182.04, postage is €65.94. What will I be paying in VAT and other customs charges?

    Thank you.

23% of the total so €57.03 + admin fee

If ordering from Japan, I always use Fedex. Their admin fee is €15 but the goods arrive in three or four days. They do text you on the day of delivery asking for payment but I always ignore it and the packages are always delivered anyway. I don't pay the charges until I get a paper invoice in the post which can be up to a month later.

An Post admin fee is €3.50 but they've returned packages of mine to Japan due to failed electronic customs clearance - so I stopped using them.

DHL also fine for delivery from Japan.

as the value is over 150 there may be customs duty as well. this depends on the taricc code for video game consoles.

I've never had customs duty on a €150+ order, just the VAT and the admin fee.

What rate is customs duty charged at?

I purchased a piece of clothing and had it delivered to the Addresspal USA service. I have received it but now need to return it by posting the return directly to the American company's warehouse. What is the situation regarding customs, duties, etc.? Will there be more charges even though I paid them when getting through Addresspal?

A relative in the UK wants to buy something online from a UK seller and send to me as a birthday gift from but wondering about customs charges.

So as long as she orders it to her UK address first then sends it on to me marked as a gift there should be no customs fees of any kind correct ?

Could she use the box/packaging it was sent to her in , but maybe remove invoices etc and put birthday card in, just to be safe ?

Thanks for any info from those who have done this.

A Gift is valued at under €45.00

    From Revenue:

Rules for duty relief on gift consignments

You can receive a gift without payment of Customs Duty and Value-Added Tax (VAT) if:

    • the value of the gift (including insurance, freight and postage costs) is €45 or less
    • the gift is correctly declared
    • the gift has been sent from a private individual outside the European Union (EU) to a private individual within the EU
    • the gift is for the personal, or family use, of a private individual in the EU
    • there is no commercial or trade element, that is, the goods have not been paid for by the recipient
    • the gift is of an occasional nature only such as a present for a birthday or anniversary.

A gift received may contain two or more items with a combined value of greater than €45. In such cases relief is given for as many of those items as add up to a value not exceeding €45. For example, if you receive a gift containing three items with a value of €20 each, your relief applies to two of the items only. The value of an individual item cannot be split up.

Please read the charter for this forum, and the 1st post in this thread regarding customs etc.

The UK companies have great difficulty understanding taking off the VAT on export. I wouldn't assume that they will.

You should look up the TARIC to make sure that there is no duty on kayaks, as duty can go up to 10% if payable. Go to customs at the arrival port.

Similar query here, elderly relative bought an old camera on eBay from Japan. Vat was charged and paid with postage through eBay checkout. see below. Item was delivered by Fedex and now a few weeks later they are looking for VAT and handling charge.

    image.png

He was very clear that he only purchased as VAT was already paid and didn't want to pay additional charges to carrier. So if a demand had arrived in advance of delivery he would have refused delivery. What can he do now, if he pays he pays VAT twice and carrier charge - that can't be right.

I have paid VAT at Ebay's checkout on a few UK purchases and then been charged again by An Post.

I have paid An Post (as I wanted the item) and then requested that Ebay refund the VAT. They have done so with proof of payment - documents uploaded via this link https://ocsnext.ebay.com/ocs/mudcwf?deptName=CollectRemitRefund

Ebay won't refund the €3.50 admin fee.

Your case is less straightforward as you haven't paid Fedex yet - best thing would be to contact Ebay and see if they will refund on foot of the demand. They may insist on you paying the second charge first.

Are they putting the IOSS number on the paperwork and parcel? If not, that's why couriers will ignore anything else and charge VAT/Duty.

I spotted a camera lens on eBay for $165, seller/shop is in china , there was a make an offer option & my $157 was accepted ,reading eBay t&C the price includes vat, I received an email from eBay requesting me to complete the purchase , however when I went to checkout there was a vat charge of $35 added I tried to back out & remove the item from my basket but an eBay pop-up informed me I couldn't do this because I had committed to buy, so here's me thinking I saved $7 when in reality I paid $35 more that the full price which included vat, crazy stuff.

Anyone bought from geekbuying confirm there's no charges for orders under 150 ?

Customer support said they use the IOSS and there's no charges

Hi , just trying to calculate price of ordering electronic goods from UK.

A speaker, cost including shipping €310

So no duties as its ,under " sound reproduction " , I think ?

    Then 23% vat , around €70

    Plus 7 euro handling fee

So around €390 roughly total cost to me on delivery? Am I right?

I’m looking at placing an order for multiple video games from Play Asia, and the value of the goods would be about €350.

What would I be looking at in terms of additional charges upon it arriving into the country?

    Thanks @whiterebel

So if I’m reading that correctly, then my order should work out at €430.50 - did I math that correctly?

Fyi An Posts customs clearance fee has increased to €4.95 as of yesterday.

so basically cost plus shipping plus 23%

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

What might I expect to have to pay for VAT and Customs for buying a guitar in the US and having it shipped here?

    3.2% Third Country Duty?

The reason that people continue to ask such a question is that the information is difficult to come by, difficult to compute easily.

If I were say, Revenue, I would seek to stand-up a simple to use website where one could input the numbers, select from drop down menus for things like country of origin and customs code etc, and bang, produce the number.

But hey, just shutting people down for the sin of asking, is preferable here.

So you think everyone else is supposed to find it for you? Thats the reason the post was put there in the first place, everyone asking what it would cost. Not our fault here that it isn't easy to come by. There is a lot to it, which is why there is so much information on the first post.

hi, I ordered a second hand clothing item on eBay uk for £300. There were no import fees showing on eBay, I thought this might be because the item was second hand. Now I see UPS are looking for €151 for government charges!!! Does this sound correct?

Ebay checkout only charges import fees on a transaction of under €150.

Anything above that needs to be paid by the buyer.

    £300 = €360

Postage value needs to be added on.

I think clothes are liable for customs duty (not sure). Some items are exempt.

    And then VAT at 23%.

And UPS handling fee is c. €18.50

So probably correct. If you track the item on UPS website they should be a breakdown of the charges there.

I think UPS brokerage fee is more now, I got charged €17.70 plus 23% VAT for brokerage by them last month for a total of €21.77.

I wasn't too pleased about it as the seller usually uses FedEx for their larger items who calculate the brokerage at 30% of the VAT bill and on this item would have been €7.37.

Yes, Fedex much better. UPS now demand payment before delivery. Fedex will request it but will deliver anyway even if not paid upfront & instead will send a paper invoice three or four weeks later.
