The US actually domestically mines rare earths but then has to ship them to China to be refined.

Theres probably loads more deposits in the USA but their mentality is very much frontier claim staking, which overlooks the processing phase.

OK ta. I wanted to tie down if Trump has any particular interest in supporting Putin's reason for annexing Crimea. From the replies, it seems to revolve around its military potential as a natural defence against encroachment for Russia.

I think Trump is close to walking away from day to day political interest in Ukraine and hand that over to Rubio, while holding unto presidential approval in the final call to call it a day in assisting Zelenskyy.

Commercially, that sounds insane for both countries if tariffs costs were to be thrown in at both ends, let alone for a supposedly strong independent trading nation like the US to have to export the goods to China for refining. Presumably there would have to be some safeguards against either side using the trade as a weapon against the other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,689 ✭✭✭yagan

Commercially China doesn't need US rare earths, it just takes payment for refining for the USA as if it was any other paying customer.

Edit to add tariffs may not apply for processing a material that won't be sold in China.

It's mainly dangerous for the judges that judges are getting arrested in Trump's America. You could argue that it's dangerous for Trump that it may spark a popular uprising against him, but if that hasn't happened by now, it's unlikely to happen in the future.

You have your really pro-Trump MAGA people, your really anti-Trump people, and then everyone else in the middle who are just trying to get through the working week. So long as the American public stays basically divided into these three camps, Trump will probably keep intimidating the judiciary and consolidating power.

The main thing that might curtail Trump's agenda is that which has also, ironically, set the stage for Trump's rise in the first place, and that is Big Business. Per that little meeting between Trump and the Walmart guy recently where Trump was told to drop the tariffs lest the shelves run empty, Trump can get smacked down if he messes with too many cash flows.

Not really the same, our constitution says nothing about control of Donegal or territory. Since 1998 the constitution recognises everyone born on the island as being entitled to be part of the Irish Nation.

We don't have anything about the actual government or control of territory in there. In theory you could give Donegal to the UK without any constitutional changes

Thanks. It does point out the dangers to the US that it does not have enough of a capable home refining industry that it has to rely on one of its major trading opponent nations to do what it should be capable of doing for itself. Given the present state of play internationally, one has to wonder what form of payment China is accepting for the refining.

They take USD of course and then spend it developing trade infrastructure in poor countries that the west neglect.

The rise in the price of cocoa for western consumers at the moment is a good example of Chinese investment cutting out the western middlemen. China took its USD surplus, invested in cocoa processing plants in Ivory Coast and Ghana and then takes payment for the loan in refined cocoa for the Chinese market.

Previously western countries wouldn't lend to these countries whereas China has kept the trade tangible, lending to them to develop their processing which adds enormous value to their exports as refined product can be warehoused longer than raw crop which gives them massive market leverage.

Western media will of course paint this as some form of Chinese exploitation, but in reality it's the type of development that should have happened decades ago, but western companies made their profit in the processing stage so they were never going to fund domestic processing there.

China simply applied US dollars to where they should have gone decades ago.

Ref media outlet sources, I have seen a post on MSN from the Daily Wrap to the effect that the Zelenskyy Administration is planning to use seized Russian assets and to place tariffs on Russian imports into Ukraine [when the war ends] to fund reconstruction there. Now, given how things are occurring presently between the two combatants and the US involvement in the war on two fronts, that would seem to be very far forward planning so I have to ask if the Daily Wrap has any credibility on reporting actual genuine news.

I've googled on the Daily Wrap and an outlet [the Wrap] popped up several times as a US left-leaning outlet. Are they separate outlets or one and the same outlet AND does it/they have street cred in the media world? Do I push the ignore button when I see the Daily Wrap on the screen?

Edit: one of the sources quoted [twice] in the D/W story is supposedly Ukraine's PM, Denys Shymal.

Article 1 and 5 would surely preclude us from handing Donegal over to the UK, even if they are not directly worded that way. Article 1: The constitution asserts the "inalienable, indefeasible, and sovereign right" of the Irish people to self-determination and Article 5: The state is declared to be "sovereign, independent, and democratic". As Donegal is part of the state and those who live there there are part of "the Irish people", anything that would remove their right to self-determination and to sovereignty and independence (from outside rule) would presumably be unconstitutional.

I meant more in the case of Donegal being added to the existing 6 counties that already allow the same rights under the existing constitution

But we're off topic, though I do think as I said earlier that Northern Ireland could be the blueprint for what happens with Crimea in order to the the war

On the point of Ukraine, it appears to be the case that it would be unconstitutional for Zelensky to 'hand over' Crimea to the Russians. This could only done by amending the constitution (which can only be done by Parliament - they don't hold referendums). Hard to see how this can ever come to pass - the Ukrainian parliament will surely never agree to a constitution that says Crimea belongs to Russia, having been illegally invaded by the Russians in 2014.

This case of the Irish green card holder currently being detained in an ICE centre illustrates that abiding by their laws means nothing to Trump and the witch hunt he's unleashed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,847 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

Rubio, in a "meet the press" event with MSNBC yesterday, said "that of course, everyone should have their day in court" when asked whether all citizens and non-US citizens on US soil are entitled to due process BUT followed that up with this "But let me tell you, on immigration standing, the laws are very specific,' he added, appearing to realize what he had said about a day in court 'If you're in this country unlawfully, you have no right to be here and you must be removed, that's what the law says.'

This follows on from Trumps statement about how it would take too long to hear each deportation case in court, referring to them as alleged criminals "it would, without exaggeration, take 200 hundred years". SCOTUS has ruled that the deportees must be given the chance to challenge their removal, EDIT; by the Admin under the "Enemy Aliens" act.

On the Ukraine war front, it's been reported that Putin has declared there will be a 3-day ceasefire next week in Ukraine to coincide with the 80th anniversary of V-E day. Last week, Russia decided not to hold a major military parade in Crimea in connection with the anniversary as it would be too risky for the safety of the participants and on-lookers.

Putin may be hedging his bets by announcing his latest ceasefire way in advance of the date, unlike his recent ceasefire, so that if anything happens to mar the parade, he can point the finger at Ukraine and Zelenskyy.

If it's as non-existent as his previous (Easter) ceasefire, then no doubt we will see more disinformation about Ukrainian aggression.

Ive seen alot of comparisons of Andor to modern America and Thatchers Britain.

People saying the Empire is like ICE, enforcing their immigration laws against undocumented workers.

I guess there are parallels, but Andor was filmed in 2023.

The Empire has stood in for many regimes over the last 45 years.

Its a superb tv show, looking forward to the rest of series 2.

a cease fire means no firing but does it also mean that one can move arnaments, tanks, guns, food , transport, etc, etc, etc, to the front lines and mount a MASSIVE offensive manoeuvre on day 4 , day 5 etc, etc, etc.?

Trump is over 1 month into his war with the Houthi's and now it looks like India and Pakistan could break in to all out conflict.

Using his logic, that's his fault as well.

And of course the war in Ukraine and the genocide in Palestine are continuing.

This from the self-anointed most peaceful President ever.

And what's he doing? Creating unenforceable laws to target specific people with his all delivery drivers must be able to speak english law announced today.

Safe to say this isn't going to be the thing to turn those falling poll numbers around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,912 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Really? Who the hell cares if you're delivery driver has good English as long as they deliver.

What a bizarre subject to get hung on. Let me have a guess,a lot of immigrants do deliveries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,031 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Yep. But it's for safety reasons don't you know. Who cares if they have valid drivers licenses for which they had to prove they understood road signs and the rules of the road.

    https://cbsaustin.com/news/nation-world/trump-to-sign-executive-order-mandating-truckers-speak-english

According to a White House document obtained by Breitbart News, the order emphasizes that English proficiency is a "non-negotiable safety requirement" for professional drivers.

The document outlines the necessity for truckers to "read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety officers, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station personnel, and provide and receive feedback and directions in English."

It's literally trying to push America back 100 years.

They have a big truck driver shortage. These people are biting their tails and saying ouch.

Such a joke, this coming from a man that hasn't managed to put a coherent sentence together in God knows how long.

    Again.

    Culture war nonsense.

The press need to cop on and hammer the press secretary with questions that really matter, and not get distracted by this utter racist-bait nonsense.

Ask and ask again about Ukraine, Israel, tariffs and inflation.

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

It's ok, with the China tariffs, the number of boats arriving from China will drop next month so there will be layoffs of drivers because there will be **** all containers to truck throughout the US.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,945 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

Drop is actually starting this week and trucking companies were already finding it difficult to keep drivers active due to lower freight numbers

ICE deports a 4 year old child with cancer, who is a US citizen, no less.

Loss of empathy is a key problem in people with frontotemporal dementia

Can't think of any currently sitting US president that fits to a 'T' … or can I?

The IMF's boffins say they can start to see the impact from space as satellites track fewer, increasingly empty ships leaving China's ports. Of course this will be denied by the US.

Commercial satellites can track container ships even if AIS is off.
