Early days but Mullen definitely going to have to come off and Cody looks laboured in his chasing. Doesn't seem to be right either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 661 ✭✭✭Neewollah

Lots of positives in that half. Pity about Mullen and particularly Murphy after finally nailing a place on the team. Cody grew into it and Mackessey settling into this level. Molloy very busy along with Billy Ryan. Looks a decent structure to our play

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 262 ✭✭Pigeon Chaser

That looked bad for Murphy. Hopefully not. He has been playing well.

Decent showing so far. Galway look a poor side though.

It doesn't feel like championship pace.

Going alright so far. Molloy and Kenny have done well and Billy Ryan has hit some good scores. We've mixed a running and direct game, some aimless passes in particular during the middle of the half but at least it is not too predictable.

Losing Mullen and Murphy early is a blow as it limits our sub options in the 2nd half. Mullen's injury was dealt with farcical tbh, he spent ages off the pitch getting treated with us down to 14 and then when he came back on looking immediately unable to run, he was left on for another 4 or 5 minutes. He should have been taken off much quicker and probably should never have been sent back on the pitch.

That's a poor Galway performance. KK should be ahead by more at half time.

Good win, hard to fathom how poor Galway are when they had such talent underage for 4/5 years that should be starting to come into their prime now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,124 ✭✭✭I says

when loughrea are county champions that tells you all you need to know about the state of hurling in Galway. Huw lawlor could have had a nap in the second half and he wouldn’t have missed anything. Piss poor and will be from Galway for a while yet. This team won’t get out of Leinster this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,597 ✭✭✭Village87

I knew Galway were bad but that was disgraceful, no fight, no pace , no threat. They have no chance of getting out of Leinster. Looking back Henry did well. They were a disgrace.

Kilkenny went through the motions and won pulling up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,315 ✭✭✭blackcard

Delighted to get a win with a good score difference. Probably flattered with the goals. Injuries to Mullen, Shane Murphy and Blanchfield a concern. Mikey Butler had his best game for a while and midfield did well. Galway didn't threaten a goal at any stage. Good to see Stephen Donnelly get a run.

    Decent performance from kk

The injuries are a big concern going forward

    Galway were awful

Did anyone see what happened between cooney and butler ?

Loughrea were worthy county champions and were a whisker away from beating Na Fianna, who won the final pulling up. Whatever other stick you use to beat Galway hurling with, picking on Loughrea is the wrong one.

Good win even allowing for the fact that Galway are a total shambles

Good stuff from Butler and Lawlor (as usual)

    Molloy and Kenny excellent

Billy Ryan brilliant in the 1st half and Mossy a constant threat. Hopefully Cody kicks on from that now. Mackessey hurled well and threw over some good scores but I'd have serious concerns for him in Croke Park

Anyway, job done, nice confidence boost, move on.

The injuries the major negative. Mullen going to be out for a while again you'd think. Agree with the above. Limped and then on the ground for 2 mins, gets a minute of treatment and the doctors give a thumbs up, take him off the field and spend 4 or 5 mins wrapping his ankle only for him to hobble back onto the field clearly fucked and waste another 2 or 3 mins before making a change.

Bar the injuries we have to be happy with how that went even if Galway were septic. Butler and Lawlor were rock solid with Galway not getting a sniff of a goal chance. Halfback line solid for the most part with Carey getting two nice points. Midfield were both excellent, both Kenny and Molloy well suited to a running game and both hit some good scores.

Billy Ryan was very good in the 1st half and got through a lot of work, John Donnelly hadn't his best game ever but got a nice score at the end of the 1st half and put in the effort. His brother had a fine game when he game on and with a bit more conviction and confidence could have had a goal. Mackeassy was very good, he hit some fine scores and won some decent ball. Well able for the running game also, however he does foul a lot which we won't always get away with. Cody took his goal brilliantly and had a good game in general. Mossy was frustrating in that although he scored 1-02 he should have had at least 2 or 3 more scores but he kept slipping. He needs better boots for softer ground.

Shame about the injuries to Mullen, Murphy and Blanchfield. Murphy's looked very nasty I'd be surprised if he's fit for a good while. I said my piece on Mullen's injury and treatment earlier so hopefully he won't be out long. Blanchfield's substitution was hopefully precautionary, he had been playing fairly well and much more restrained to some of his recent performances which was probably needed.

As has been said Galway were terribly poor and they'll struggle to get out of Leinster if they throw performances like that in against Dublin or Wexford. But we can only beat what is put in front of us and we did that nicely.

AnAny chance they could make some kind of structure to put a camera on the new stand and facing the main stand?Looks embarrassing the camera facing empty spaces every single game.

Dublin left it late to beat Offaly. It’ll be interesting to see highlights and analysis to find out how the game went. Despite Offaly’s recent improvement, you’d have to think it’s still a bit early for them to really challenge for Leinster. Dublin have the ability to mix to good with the bad. Really we should be handling both teams without issue if we’re challenging for Liam this year

Leaving aside Galways level that performance was different gravy by Kilkennys yardstick in terms of playing a modern game. Runners off shoulders, throwing the balll out of rucks, working the ball into good positions, delivery over past the deep sitting center back all mostly good and high tempo as well. As were the puckouts - including a good mix of long. For the first time I’ve seen clear improvement. Clearly a lot of good work done in Portugal. If we can do similar against Wexford then I’ll be happy. Btw if there is such a discrepancy between league and championship I wonder if what we might see tomorrow in munster.

Very good win with the obvious caveat of how poor Galway were. It looked from an early stage we were the far better team and only Galway's accuracy kept them in it in the 1st half. Galway looked all over the shop other than that early spell but credit goes to Derek and the lads for the workrate and positivity we showed. Richie Reid was top class as were all of our backs and midfield, particularly Jordan Molloy. Billy Ryan excellent in 1st half but needs to address this habit he has of going completely out of games in the 2nd period. Great to see Eoin Cody finish well also. Only blemishes were the injuries. Hopefully Mullens is minor and at least is not the same issue, but you'd fear for Shane Murphy which is a real shame given how well he was playing.

The atmosphere was really, really unusual. So flat and quiet and I felt Galway supporters were apprehensive from the very start. Very strange. 3 big games coming, would be nice to be in a Leinster final before the last round.

Very good performance by kilkenny even if it was a very underwhelming game. There was barely a tackle in the first half when the game was a contest. Not much of an atmosphere.

Anyway not our fault galway were so poor, Cathal Mannion aside, who is a joy to watch. I was happy for mackessy. I felt there was a lot of pressure on that early 65 just because of his unusual situation.

Carey and Molloy were excellent and Cody got a few good scores. Butler had a great outing. Looks like the dreaded acl for Shane sadly.

I really hope for him it’s not the cruiciate but looked like it. He’s clearly worked very hard to nail down that spot.

Apart from injuries a good start to the championship for us. Great to see Stephen Donnelly get a run too. Galway supporters around me were very concerned to say the least.

Does anybody know if Gearoid Dunne is injured? He’d be nice to have on the bench

Kk eventually now know how to play the modern game and they look good against albeit a v poor Galway outfit. The strength indept impresses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 137 ✭✭neverbet

Galway were as poor last year in their games against Wexford and Dublin so hard to know what is going on there. The history of our games with them in Round Robin up to yesterday was a point either way , they will be worried. Wouldn't write them off though. Our lads look better conditioned this year and more comfortable mixing up the long and short game. Injuries apart, it was an encouraging first outing .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭Sir Chaz

That's a fair point about conditioning and fitness. We seemed the get stronger the more the game went on yesterday whereas last year our Achilles heel was fading out of games in 2nd half. Hopefully something that has been addressed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,672 ✭✭✭me89

Good win and to score 3-20 from play in those conditions was impressive, the only downside was the injuries.

Eoin Murphy had one or two dodgy puckouts but overall very good mix of long and short.

Mikey probably his best game of the year

Huw what more can be said

Shane Murphy was doing really well and carries the ball so well, hopefully not seriously injured

Carey another really good game some nice scores

Ried so composed on the ball and his reading of the game top class.

Paddy did ok when moved to corner back and solid performance

Molly and Kenny never stop working and tackling and well able to take there scores yesterday, Kenny links the play so well. Do we finally have a settled midfield paring?

Mullen another unfortunate injury, feel sorry for him.

Donnelly worked his socks off again

Mackessy people were writing him off and nearly wanting him to fail but looks like he is getting to the pace of senior intercounty and brought a physicality to the half forward line and some nice scores

Billy what a massive turnaround in him since the Dublin match last year, I was one of the people writing him off but happy to see i was wrong, was excellent first half

Cody looked really short of confidence at times in the first half but grew into the game and will get better as the year goes on

Mossy needs new boots but again 1-02 and our most consistent scorer

Stephen Donnelly did well and probably should of gone for goal in 2nd half.

Blanch should be starting did well when came on

Good structure to the play and the balls into the two man full forward line were excellent

Have to agree with you Village. I thought Billy Ryan was excellent yesterday a hard worker and his confidence is growing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,819 ✭✭✭Archduke Franz Ferdinand

a good win. Unfortunate with picking up those injuries, hopefully none will be too serious.lts hard to know what to make of Galway, obviously underage dominance they had for years is not coming through for some reason. The Leinster experience hasn’t really improved galway , 2017 aside obviously. Wexford are being underrated l feel.. not by most k fans as we all know what Wexford are capable of when they see kk jerseys. But they have some really nice forwards, l feel if Wexford could get another couple of good players in the half back , midfield area they would be a force

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭Marrooned

KK played Galway U20’s yesterday which ended in a draw,at half time Galway were winning by 13 pts. Liam Hogan never missed a free,Sean Hunt was good as was Evan Murphy. Cork bet KK U20’s on Good Friday by two points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,597 ✭✭✭Village87

Yes Wexford are strong and are getting stronger with every game. Hard to believe Liam Ryan is the same age as Huw Lawlor. If they get Ryan and McDonald back and one or 2 more they are clearly 2nd best in Leinster. Galway and Dublin are hopeless. Offaly had a great chance of getting the win yesterday

As a Galway man, this "thinking" from people outside of the county sort of annoys me. Many of those minor wins were 1 or 2 games to win the All-Ireland (during covid etc). It's like the old days of Galway getting to an All-Ireland semi final by default.

The real issue, imo, is our pathetic record at u20/21 etc. We haven't won an All-Ireland at the grade since 2011. The kind of mess that Galwat served up yesterday will keep happening as a legacy of our frao record at the u20 grade. Minor is, now, a kids grade and bears absolutely no relevance, imo, to senior prospects etc. That's what I find annoying about people saying thar Galway having so much underage talent etc. It's essentially winning kids competitions..

As regards yesterday, Kilkenny seemed to be playing the modern running type game and played it well. Obviously, very deserving of the win, and, imo, probably win leinster. After that, who knows. Definitely "dark horses" for the All-Ireland, but, honestly, not favourites for it (Limerick or Cork, for me, tbh). But, if I was a Kilkenny man, I would read very little into yesterday's match as Galway were as bad as I've seen them in decades.
