Lowe has rheumatoid arthritis which is an autoimmune disease that can be managed pretty effectively and symptom free with drugs. It’s not like the arthritis that your grandad has in his knees (osteoarthritis).

Great signing, very enthused about the 6 month contract, win win for the club & international star on sabbatical. Amazing for the next generation of stars get exposure to these guys day in day out to see the work ethic and learn by sharing experiences

The absolute irony of claiming Leinster are doing anything to prevent youth development :D

They're literally the best in the world at it.

It was just yesterday that Munster announced the signing of two young Leinster front rows. Players whom have recently been usurped at Leinster by two even younger players. People just want to take a shot at the province without engaging their brains.

If Leinster have been given wider scope to sign NIQs of their choosing as a consequence of having to pay more for their Ireland players then that would make sense to me.

    Good signing this.

MOD: More posts deleted and warnings handed out.

The next person to reference Munster fans whining etc or go looking for their response elsewhere on the internet will be looking at worse.

Jesus, just enjoy the signing and what it means for Leinster.

I like this idea of getting players in for 6 months who are good enough to just slot in, can keep standards high during 6N without the internationals, and who can bring something new.

Elsom, Thorne, Barrett - these type of short-term signings have exposed our younger players to serious quality and new perspectives, with Elsom and Thorne's influence and impact on the squad lasting well beyond them. Suspect the same will be said about Barrett.

With the way things are panning out, you'd have to think this is the end of the road for Frawley at Leinster. At least Osborne is young enough to bide his time a bit (though I'm not thrilled about the idea of him spending longer moving around the backline).

And that's the problem many can't see. Leinster's short term success is being put ahead of the development of home grown talent.

"Leinster Rugby are delighted to confirm this morning the signing of Blues Rugby and New Zealand All Black utility back, Rieko Ioane."

Calling him a Utility back rather than centre is potentially interesting.

I mean, this is fundamentally untrue though. Leinster develop far more homegrown talent than anyone - it is not even particularly close.

We should absolutely be bringing these kind of NIQ players in. I just question the position of this one. Also I suspect Frawley was gone either way.

That would be a real shame , I'm not excited by this 'big signing', my connection/interest to leinster weakens further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 720 ✭✭✭jonok28

I don't see as much of a problem as others do.

Leinster have always used three 10's. This season Sam, Ross and Ciaran. Next season Sam, Harry and Ciaran.

Jamie Osborne will overtake Henshaw at the 12 jersey fairly soon and Henshaw will be moved to the bench. Ioane will be used as a utility player.

Will Frawley find time hard to come by at centre? Yes but there is opportunities at 10 during the season and at 15.

Why would this signing weaken your interest in leinster? Why is this signing not a good moce

I'm curious to hear what you suggest as an alternative.

Do you think that Leinster should only have home grown players and no NIQs?

Or do you think we should only have NIQs in areas of comparative weakness in the Leinster setup?

Because the beauty of it is Leinster produce quality and promise in every position. And a lot of the quality and talent can attribute at least some of their development to the direct and indirect influence of NIQs

How does ones connection weaken due to this signing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,162 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

Spoiled or main character syndrome. You decide

blocks the progress to some home bred , like Frawley, Osbourne and a few from Academy. Is it really needed ??

Whatever this signing means, I think holding back development of young Irish guys is the least of its impact. If he does a similar stint to Barrett, who took a holiday in the middle of his already brief time here, the impact will be negligible.

Frawley has much deeper issues already. Osborne is getting loads of game time. For guys like Cooney, their key time is the first half of the season when Ioane won’t even be here.

Ah come on.. no side in the world plays more homegrown or academy players.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,465 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Leinster are one of the best at playing young/home grown players. If you want to be the best you need signings and alternative voices. Its great signing for leinster. Would love to be able get signings like these in munster.

Osborne is at over 1000 minutes this season with at least 6 Leinster games left and a summer tour to come.

Last season he finished with 1500 minutes.

He has 240 minutes in the ERCC this season vs 340 last (with the extra time factored in)

Anyone who pulls his name for blocked development is both straw manning and doing him a disservice.

If Frawley, Osbourne, Jimmy O'Brien or others are knocking it out of the park, they'll get their spot in the team. J Osbourne is an international, he'll be fine. Andrew Osbourne is nowhere near the level yet.

Frawley has been pretty poor this year and Jimmy O'Brien has been distinctly average - and they've both had chances to play. Right now the only thing blocking them is their own form.

One player coming in for half a season isn't going to displace these players as they're not currently in the conversation for the 23. Those players you and others mention have an entire first half of the season to show their ability and take the jersey.

Great signing. We will have Henshaw/Osborne for 12 and Ringrose/Ioane at 13. Henshaw isn’t getting any younger and can’t cover 13 to the same degree as he could earlier in his career. Ioane can cover wing if needed which hopefully puts an end to Osborne at 14. If anything, I see this as good news for Osborne as he’ll likely see the majority of his minutes at 12/15 which has been an issue with Jordie Barrett playing in his preferred positions this year.

That is not what I said. I said the IRFU in allowing this move are not facilitating players already through the youth system, and in the squad getting, game time to further their development. We will have more Tommy O'Briens not getting a break until 26. Ioane is not Jordie Barrett either . Ringrose is a better player so the argument of developing players through setting example is spurious, unlike in the case of Jordie Barrett. Provinces, any provinces, should only be allowed sign overseas players in two scenarios - specific position need where a quality IQ player is not available, or an exceptional world class talent on a short term ala Jordie Barrett
