Enjoyed how religious they were to the game in parts of that episode. Good opening and I'm intrigued about the last scene with the exposed pipe.

Ah forgot it was on YouTube. Great companion podcast.

ratings are up, the show is a huge success and not just with gamers

Ellie and her friend and that whole scouting party were acting dumb… and the female psychiatrist, very early day drinking while on the job, also dumb. People are looking to get up set about gender dynamics…. I was expecting angry comments about how the show has to shove gay characters in audiences faces…… I remember the internet got very upset about it when the game was released.

I can imagine that I'd be drinking on the job during a zombie apocalypse while having a meeting with the person who killed my partner. Nothing dumb about it really.

There will be some people angry about it, let them be, nothing is being shoved in their faces, she's just gay, if they kissed a boy no one would be shouting about shoving straight characters in our faces.

I've no idea how you got that from this episode. Ellie and her girlfriend literally walk into a building with infected when they didn't need to, what's smart or wise about that?

From playing through both games multiple times I dont see a problem with how the characters are presented in the tv show. They are playing up Ellie's anger for sure but considering the story its warranted. The series overall should come together probably even more towards the end of Season 3. HBO rarely make a turkey.

Well, for what my humble opinion is worth, I really enjoyed Season 1 and I'm excited for Season 2. I never played the game (or any game!)

I love the character of Ellie, and again as I never played it, I am not influenced by the game, so I can enjoy it for what it is. I like that the character of Ellie is not just another buffy-like tough, but strong and brave "pretty girl", but a very awkward and almost stunted character. She is not very likeable. But I'm still rooting for her. I also find her not to be all that smart, but quite reckless.

(To note: massive Buffy fan here).

(Also, a massive fan of Rutina Wesley, and Tati Gabrielle)

I have required day drinking for a lot less but I am of the belief that only Christmas Day is when you can describe day/morning drinking as not a dumb move.

One thing the creator mentioned on the podcast which is interesting is that Joel and Ellie use violence differently. Joel only does it when it's necessary or protecting someone. Ellie on the otherhand gets a thrill out of it. It was hinted at in season 1 but in this ep, she holds the guy in an arm bar longer than needed, gets excited about rifle practice, wants to be on patrol more and blindly goes into a dangerous building. Can be seen as immature and inexperience but they are saying it's more than that. It has definitely made me think about other details like constantly cleaning her gun.

It was her birthday, the first one she's had without her husband and the man who killed him is coming for a therapy session with her, I don't think it's dumb at all that she was drinking.

She's clearly massively still grieving and she even said herself "You killed Eugene. And I resent you for it. No, maybe a little more, I hate you for it".

I just found that therapy session absolutely absurd. Putting the drinking aside, I just can't fathom how either Joel or the therapist would think that it is a good idea given their history. I mean she essentially accused him of being a pedophile without cause and he just sat there all teary eyed, Lol.

The community has been running for long enough that they should have another therapist, at the very least, in training to avoid these conflicts. I mean they seem to have apprentices and people in training elsewhere so surely they could find someone up to it. I assume it's straight out of the game, it's the only explanation.

Joel going to therapy isn't in the game at all, played them both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,791 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Not from the game at all. But I also don't think it's that unreasonable.

You have a town of maybe 1000+ people. Therapists likely aren't that easy to come by, and chances are more effort is put into training people in more labour/security/engineering type jobs because it's a higher priority, along with education, medical etc. This therapist may be training one or two more, but that also wouldn't mean they're sitting in on private sessions, particularly if the client (Joel) doesn't want someone else sitting in, given how embarrassed he seems to be about going to therapy in the first place.

We don't know yet what happened with the therapist's husband. Presumably he was out on a patrol with Joel, got infected and Joel had to kill him (again, this is not in the game at all so I'm only theorising), though she said something about the manner in which Joel killed him, so I'm not sure. Either way, it seems like she agreed to be his therapist, and he agreed to see her, and now that underlying tension between them is coming to a boil. Maybe she thought she could be professional and look past it, in order to try and deal with her resentment towards him.

Must say, I don't think I've heard Love Buzz by Nirvana crop up on anything else before!

Is it implied that the heat/light from the sparkler at the end awakened the virus within the drain pipe?

I have to say, the outrage I saw, read and remember from that time was all due to the involvement of golf. It made the entire story for a lot of us feel flat.

I don't recall any homophobia tbh. I know people who accused, those who hated the involvement of golf, of Homophobia.

For me, it did nothing for the story. It made me feel a dislike to Ellie. Yet, here I was still cheering her on. It wasn't supposed to do that

Likewise, she looks nothing like Ellie form the game and does not posses the screen presence to carry such a demanding role.

    Terrible casting decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,791 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Pedro Pascal doesn't look like Joel. Gabriel Luna definitely doesn't look like Tommy.

Actors are cast based on how they can embody the character. You will rarely get an actor who both looks similar enough to a computer-generated, designed character, and who the creators also feel is the best actor for the role out of everyone they auditioned/met with.

I thought they did a great job in the first season, and had no complaints with their performance. They hit all the levels they needed to.

As you can see from the Internet and this thread alone she divides opinion, this season will certainly be a steeper test of her credentials.

Yeah but I have better trust in the makers of the game, who were heavily involved in casting, to be satisfied that they picked the right actors for the characters they created than just "opinions on the internet", particularly where a lot of those opinions center on not looking enough like a computer generated model, which is something they don't complain about with the rest of the cast who also don't look like their digital counterparts.

It's opinion at the end of the day, everyone is entitled to not like the actor or their performance. I just really find the argument that Bella Ramsey doesn't look enough like a CGI model of a character to be utterly redundant.

I seen nothing dumb about the psychiatrist drinking. There is zombies about they are in a small community trying to survive, the world as they know it has ended 5 to 6 years ago and they are just trying to stsy ssbe the best way they know how.

Gay people have been around forever. What is there to get upset about. Only people with very small minds like the buffoons in America get upset about gay or Trans people these days.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

    I thought it was a bit of ' I'm invincible '

I was bitten but survived , these zombies can't hurt me....

Yeah there's certainly an element of that in how Ellie carries herself imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,368 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Oh there's definitely that but it was straight from the creators mouth. Taking the infected out of the equation for a sec, the armbar she gets the guy in at the start. You have to hate someone or you get off on violence if you hold that after someone taps. As he was her sparring partner, it leads into what they're saying. Yeah she's cocky and definitely feels a bit invincible but will be interesting to see her unnecessary violence escalate.

Played (and loved) the first game twice and really enjoyed the first series. Never got around to playing the second game (on my to do list), so also enjoying the fact that I don't know what's to come.

Solid first episode. Great addition of Catherine O'Hara. Didn't expect the Fireflys to appear at the town quite so soon. As soon as I saw the roots in the pipe I thought there'd be trouble a brewing from a fungal perspective (unless I'm mistaken and they're on fire). Can imagine the stalkers are a pain in the game!

If you're going to play the 2nd game I highly recommend the remastered upgrade for 10 euro. Got it a few days ago for another play through and it is just about the best looking game Ive played on PS5. Taking my time with the upcoming TV episodes to get a better feel for how it compares to the game.

the world as they know it has ended 5 to 6 years ago

Hasn't it been 25 years since the outbreak not 5 or 6?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,898 ✭✭✭Ezeoul

If that was the case, Ellie would be in her 40s.

Ellie was born in the QZ, no?

I never played the games but my understanding is the events of S1 are 20 years after the initial infection. S2E1 then jumped forward 5 years after the opening with Abby.
