Not all of them will, but enough of them will buy his 'we gotta take some pain while we repair the damage done by Biden' nonsense

This is the same logic that Milei has spouted as he crashes the Argentinian economy and brought the IMF and World bank in to bail out his ultra libertarian selloff of everything in the Argentinian state.

Its impossible to argue against this position as they will adopt the wait and see position until they are either wiped out (by which time the damage is done) or there is some bounce back and then they can claim it was worth it all along.

It took almost 10 years for the hardcore brexiteers to finally accept that maybe the sunlit uplands weren't coming after all (and many of them still cling to the hope of a mythical brexit dividend just around the corner)

People are already being lifted off the street and held indefinitely or deported without any due process.

It's not the future, its already happening. Remember, we're less than 90 days since the inauguration on Jan 20th. It takes a bit of time to scale up, but the intent is clear as day

Seriously why do people have to put Ireland down. Ireland is not a geographically remote island in the middle of nowhere. Othewise Meta, Google,Intel, Apple, Pharma industry etc would not have such large operations here. Don't come back with tax answer as they don't have to have as much as they have here to avail of our corporate tax rates.

Has milei brought in the imf?

Although similar in populist behaviour he seems to doing the opposite of Trump, reducing trade frictions.

I’m glad to see this getting coverage. We ( I’m in the US) literally have people “disappearing”. A local guy went for a routine immigration appointment three weeks ago and was detained. Has no criminal background, no political or protest activity. His family has been advised to keep a low profile and avoid attention so few people outside the neighborhood know. Makes me wonder what the scale of this s abuse is. Trump shouted about “illegal” “violent criminals”. What we are seeing is the local waiter falling foul of an arbitrary process. This is terrifying. Democracy has been chipped away at for decades. Started with the 'Citizens United' decision that allowed unlimited money to be spent in politics by corporations and lobby groups

Then it continued as republican states introduced more and more measures that disenfranchise voters, deregistering voters, introducing mandatory IDs, allowing votes to be 'challenged' and replaced with 'provisional ballots' that never get counted

It loaded the dice in favour of the GOP, it meant that if there was a strong enough Democratic turnout, they could still win, but the vote was still rigged so that the democrats had to win a majority just to tie the election.

In the last election, millions of votes were not counted. Just ignored, and those millions of uncounted votes, would have almost certainly have reversed the outcome of the election.

We would have Harris instead of Trump. A stay of execution because Harris would be blocked by the absolute shitshow that is the US congress, and the US Media, so in 4 years, the GOP would sweep back into power to chip away even further and rig the vote even more.

Democracy was moribund. Trump is the guy who happened to be here at the right time and in the right place to capitalise on the end of democracy in the US.

Well, perhaps multi-generational Irish Catholics fit your description, but this arc of the thread was about your question on Hispanic voters & Trump in 2024. I don't think that group worships the same way as more established American Catholics. Remember that only a generation or so ago, most were living in fairly religiously backwards countries under the thumb of the RCC.

One additional thing; the Democratic party can make some major hay with the INS/DHS/ICE horrors Trump is visiting on brown people in this midterm. Hopefully they will, but 'snatching defeat from the jaws of victory' is a long-tested Democratic political strategy.

It's not just US Catholics but Americans in general. Things that are at the absolute core of the American constitution and American society like the co-equal branches of government, innocent until proven guilty, due process, and freedom of speech are being willfully ignored by the Trump administration. Any Trump supporter who also claims to be loyal to the constitution is either an idiot, a hypocrite, or corrupt (and probably a combination of all three).

Speaking of corruption, I was watching Brooks and Capehart, a couple of fairly mainstream WaPO commenters talking about tariffs. David Brooks, long-time Washington correspondent, said it's just an opportunity for institutionalized corruption. Countries will be visiting DC and sending lobbyists to ask who to bribe in the government. With the shift to cryptocurrency it'll be easy for them to transfer money, and of course the Orange smegmite is immune as he was just executing his duties as POTUS (wink, wink). (just first few minutes is enough)

Also, seems like you can buy justice with sufficent campaign donations, too:

Sure doesn't Donald have his own Crypto coin that anyone can pour huge sums of money into without any chance of being caught??

The entire thing is the biggest Grift in History.

It has set a very dangerous precedent. This administration has indicated that the whim of senior government officials is all that it takes for people to be targeted.

If this continues in future, all sort of dissenting voices from non-residents will be targeted in this manner. And some people might say "Good riddance, you are a guest in America, they can decide whether or not they want you to be there". But that is ignoring the facts that there is a huge amount of subjectivity in how this could be used.

We've already seen it used to quell voices appalled at what is happening to Palestinians and a big part of this is because of the influence the Israeli's have on America and American policy.

America used to be the place that dissenters ran to because of its commitment to free speech. Now, people are at the whim of the administration or God knows how many individuals along the chain who have the ability to influence who the finger will be pointed at.

I saw on the news yesterday a Massachusetts lawyer who was actually served with a notice to deport (she is an American citizen) probably because someone made a mistake in transcribing the name of the person on the order but that is all it could take for someone to end up in a whole world of trouble.

These are very dangerous times and to see the epitome of evil Stephen Miller absolutely misrepresent the orders of the Supreme Court so as to vindicate the administrations actions is very sinister. And to have the AG, Pam Bondi, sitting there giving her tacit approval to what is being done is makes it even worse.

The US is supposed to have 3 equal branches to it's government and this administration is driving a horse and carriage through those principles.

Now should be the time those who want to keep their guns to defend against a tyrannical government step up to add their voices in protest at what is happening. Instead, these people are loudly cheering the President on. Dark dark times.

Oh totally - it’s bloody scary times. While it’s great seeing Harvard reject Trumls demands to “reform” their policies, and hence have lost 100s of millions in federal funding, they’re one of the very few institutions that have done that - everyone else has rolled over - we need the institutions to remain strong here and united - we can see that MAGA are picking them off one by one - absolutely no role in America appears to have the power or influence to stop this- and if the Democrats wait until elections it will be too late

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,115 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Look at how Trump rolled over many of the top legal firms in the country.

Many of them are now committed to working for free for the administration and aside from that humiliation, you can imagine how eager they will be to pursue cases of holding the administration to account when he clearly has them under his thumb.

China has ordered Chinese airlines to stop any purchases of aircraft and related equipment from American companies.

    So much winning.

Yeah I saw that - you would think legal firms would band together and stay firm - ie you ban one firm you ban them all- but no

Happy to see this , but isn't their fleet well the national airline anyway all Boeing? Will they change to Airbus ?

If they do change to airbus ,all pilots will need to be retrained etc.

Two things are happening in the US at the moment. There is a growing protest movement such as the the "Hands Off" rallies and the massive crowds attending the join AOC / Bernie Saunders events. At the same time, there is an administration heading quickly towards authoritarianism which is eager to quell any dissent. That seems like a powder keg waiting to go off. I wouldn't be surprised if there will be a significant clash between law enforcement and protesters similar to the 1968 Chicago riots during Trump's term.

Could see Trump doing something similar to what Putin tended to do in earlier years, you'll get some insane crackdown just before the world cup that will backfire. Honestly at the rate things are going, you could have stuff hit the fan this year though.

He is like some sort of weird organism that was created in a slurry pit. Utterly disgusting individual. Elect a criminal rapist as your president, and this is the sort of disgusting human that ends up in a high profile position.

And the second that happens , Trump declares Martial law and cancels the mid-terms on "safety and security" grounds.

He's only gagging for an excuse..

Not saying that people aren't justifiably terrified about the direction things are going , but some actions would actually benefit his efforts to take complete control by providing him with "justification" for a major clamp down.

The only thing that is going to stop him is money, or more accurately the loss of money.

When all of his stupidity and nonsense starts to really cost everyone money and specifically when the wanna-be Oligarchs start losing money , then and only then will he run out of road.

Right now they are happy to go along as they think his destruction of Federal oversight and regulations will be profitable , when that stops being true , they'll get rid of him.

Appeals to the "Greater good" or common decency will go absolutely nowhere…

Since I asked who are what is going to stop Trump, I’ve had replies (thanks everyone who did) from military coup to Trump imploding to citizens and their guns to mass riots- not a very optimistic outlook is it, and I can’t say I disagree with any of those suggestions- they’re all “possibilities” although Trump imploding is probably the least likely unfortunately

Not sure about that. I was very active in American political forums circa 2008-09 when Bush Jr was overseeing the economy losing 800,000 jobs a week and not a single Republican then was blaming Bush for economy collapsing (instead placing blame solely on Bill Clinton). He was still viewed as "God's chosen one" right up until the last.

Bush Jr had nowhere near the cult of personality surrounding him that Trump does. Its going to take half the country a long long time (most will never) to wean off MAGA regardless what happens.

I'm curious as to how many Americans are actually annoyed by all of this. Sure there's been rallies but nothing like any massive march on DC.

Are they indifferent? Afraid to protest? Actually most of them buying into this? They seem largely quiet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,724 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Take back the House and Senate in the midterms. Paralyze the executive and be sure to run LOTS of investigations, starting with Eloon. Ignore the petition? Off to the pokey.

Elect someone (Hakeem Jeffries?) House leader

Impeach Trump and Vance simultaneously. Jeffries becomes POTUS.

Nice to dream, anyway, as it's likely you can't do a 2-for-1 impeachment.

China won’t talk to Trump “unless US shows respect”

Hahahaha they just trolling them now

Turns out Trump doesn’t have the cards as the cards were also made in China
