Straight to the chief's office, as my FO is on leave. Dealt with his very competent secretary and explained the situation.

People should be mindful that the FO has ABSOLUTLY NO input in the granting/refusal of an application nor on any conditions attached. His/her only job is to make sure the application is filled out correctly and said details are input on PULSE system. In case of problems, asking a (usually) Garda to question the authority or decision of a senior officer (either 2 or 3 promoted grades) above him, is in itself questionable. Straight to the Super's or Chief Super's office (and if necessary, the District Court)and use the Firearm's Act as it is written.

The reason they keep getting away with making up their own rules, as they go along, is that they have brow beaten everyone into submission, in the don't rock the boat scenario. The longer you let them get away with it the more they will do it.

If you can do the job, do it. If you can't do the job, just teach it. If you really suck at it, just become a union executive or politician.

The only reason I went to the FO first is from experience in dealing with AGS. Any queries if it doesn't go thru their protocol and command structure is rejected.IOW everything must come from the bottom up,and if it isn't correct,it is kicked back to the local station to be corrected or queried. So IOW I needed my local lad to contact the CS office and "prime" them for a call from me to explain the situation, even while he was on vacation.[Sound man to do so]. Ringing the chief out of the blue would have the query kicked back to him to deal with when he came back.

    Hi all,

Just noticed that this magazine restriction seems to be the new norm now. First time application for a CZ 452 was recently granted. The dealer filled out the license forms for me and put down the magazine capacity as “5”, as that was the magazine being sold with the gun.

License arrived last year (only noticing this now though) and it appears I’m limited to 5 rounds and a 10 round mag would be breaching the conditions set out on the license…

so watch out as the magazine capacity set out on your application form will become the maximum limit on the license.

if you want to purchase a 10 rd magazine, put it in writing to your local FO that you want your license amended to 10 rd.

May I ask what would you give as the reasoning for needing a 10 round magazine when the FO asks?

loads of reasons, personally I would say I want to take part in PRS competitions and require 10 round magazines for those events.

But the one big reason is that your allowed to have 10 round capacity magazines under the law. but you need to have that reflected on your license.

Its a new makey up rule they brought in a few years back, the FO will ask you the magazine capacity and if you say 5 rds that's what they will issue on your license. Its a way of reducing capacity by stealth.

Or simply state ,that 10 round mags are the standard issued capacity for the gun from the factory.Which most are in 22s these days, and that CZ,Browning or whatever brand you have don't make a specific 5 round made for the Irish market.[Check this of course on Google to see what your max mag capacity is for your particular model],and put that down.

Pity your gun dealer wasn't paying attention,as that model you have can have a 25 round magazine capacity .He should have put it down as 10 rounds as a standard. As that model can use 5,10 or 25 round mags

Domino, did you go back to the Gardai and get the licence changed?

No luckily the rifle came with 3 magazines so I haven’t had the need for a 10 shot one yet. In the next year or so I reckon I will look into upgrading though, among other things I want to get barrel threaded for a moderator etc. I don’t foresee it being an issue with my FO to be honest.
