A few of Today FM's jingles and pieces have gone OTT lately. The Top of the hour news jingle especially.

    This too shall pass.

Those promos for Louise Cantillon have to be the worst ever.

And it's not like they released one bad one. Every single one of them are terrible!

I'm convinced that whoever puts them together hates Louise.

I don't listen to Louise's show but when I do, it's inoffensive and not making me rush to turn it off (when I do it's because I was going to listen to something else anyway). But they're terrible. Are they being put together by a 12 year old?

And Today FM are doing another poll. This time it's Today FM’s Big 500 Countdown - Counting down the biggest songs of the last 25 years. Unfortunately of course that just happens to coincide with the time period most of their playlist comes from anyway. And as usual they've "helpfully" supplied us with 51 acts and three songs by each of them that we can pick as well. That's the top 153 all sewn up then... With Bohemian Rhapsody and Cranberries not on the list, there'll be a new number one of course. But with high scoring songs last time out like, say, Viva La Vida by Coldplay (No 7) not being among the selected tracks, expect them to plummet, just like Bohemian Rhapsody went from No 1 down to No 85 from the first poll to the second.

I think this time around it's going to be very boring and unoriginal. It might get interesting near the end but, like I said, it's all sewn up.

They’ve been on robo-jock for the last couple of hours. No presenter on at all. Same oul playlist of course.

I had a long drive up the country this morning, and had Alison Curtis on for the journey. She played Sabrina Carpenter twice during her show. Yes, they were different songs and I get that Sabrina is "so hot right now", but playing the same artist twice over a three-hour show is pretty grim. I know it's a bit of a running joke that TodayFM's playlist is now pretty much comprised of Taylor Swift, Dermot Kennedy, Chapell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Bruno Mars, but there might be some truth in the joke.

Is any other station better, though? I mean, I've stopped listening after lunch now, going to Spotify, vinyl if I'm at home, 8 Radio when I remember or Radio Nova. Nova, ironically, has an ad for the station with some guy saying "I used to have to listen to [some other station] in work, and it was always the same songs" and they'll then play a Bowie song, a Queen song, a Dire Straits song, Private Dancer by Tina Turner and Two Out of Three Ain't Bad at some point in the following hour…

I hate todayFMs, and Irish radio in general, obsession with competitions and giving away prizes.

Takes up a lot of airtime. I suppose it's content!

Rte also fond of the nights away in hotels.

Classic Hits radio is the place to be I reckon. No cash machine, good music, but there is a very annoying competition about something lucy Kennedy said to someone.

I'd take the cash machine ads over hearing from Mick "the taximan" or the other inane callers on Classic Hits. I'm lucky that I have GBFM and the music between 12-1 is usually very good. The other afternoon hour are grand and no more or less annoying than the rest.

Any daytime radio show that either rotates the same 10 or so artists over the week or plays WhatsApp voice notes from its listeners gets switched off.

    This too shall pass.

Any Rose Gray, Wet Leg, Lambrini Girls or FKA Twigs on their playlist?

what’s your point? That’s a today fm of a bygone era

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭supereurope

The problem with Classic Hits is that bloody "What did Colm say to Lucy?" competition and the constant promos. You can tell at this stage that the presenters are sick to death with it as well.

They're all new upcoming artists. Or relatively new ones.

I had it on for a while yesterday evening after 10PM. Louise McSharry was on playing rock cliche hits for want of a description. Putridly bad stuff that was obviously a pre recorded show. She dropped one link stating that the full version of a song was to be played only to cut it mid song; a link drops in not long afterwards bragging that she played the full track.

I'd love to ring in for "What did Colm say to Lucy" and say that he told her to bugger off because she's an overbearing pain in the arse.

Classic Hits has a promo for Colm and Lucy every 10 minutes which in itself is very annoying

Ray Foleys show is pretty much all voice notes now, which is a pity, compared to the content heavy shows he had before.

I used to switch off after Dave, can't stand the Louise show, then I always switched back on at 2pm for the Ray Foley show. I'm finding now that i'm switching off straight after Music Master and not switching on until 2pm and even then I might only listen for an hour and go straight to my iTunes. I used to listen to Matt Cooper but his everyday constant giving out and attacking Trump (I don't like Trump either) is getting so boring now.
The station seems to have gone to the dogs lately

Fantasy booking here, but I'd love to see The Last Word be a Mon-Thurs show. Then what I'd do is give Foley & JP an extra hour on a Friday. Leave JP head up the sports-related bits throughout the show that TLW would have covered and then leave Foley do a mega-mix for the last 30-45 mins. Then have Dec Pierce in from 5:30 - 8:00.

I find the Foley show is a great way to get the weekend started but then Matt comes in with the doom and the gloom. There's a disconnect between Foley seeing you get up for a Friday night and Block Rockin' Beats being your soundtrack to getting ready.

In saying all that, couldn't see Ray wanting to do an extra hour on a Friday. Even if Off the Ball did a sister show or something there, rather than The Last Word.

They should move the hard shoulder to Newstalk. I like Matt, but I haven't listened in years. Far too negative for me

The Last Word will remain with TodayFM as long as Matt Cooper is there I reckon.

It makes a LOT of money for the station. Title sponsor, always has competitions. Loads of ads etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,597 ✭✭✭✭flazio

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 480 ✭✭For Petes Sake

That too, but even if there were some it would still be well in profit. It seems to be really popular for advertisers considering the sponsors, competitions etc.

Curious comment on the Dave Moore show yesterday about Music Master. Something like you'd need to play it this week if you want to play it in its current form and that things are changing from Tuesday on. Hmmm. I know that Eimear did all the questions and when she left there were enough questions until "April" which is now. Considering each show would have had at least 45 questions written for it, I'm guessing they're finally running out and they have no-one to carry on the question writing.

So refreshing to hear them play varied music all day due to the top 500 countdown (in saying that, some Cian Du Crow muck is playing ATM)
