Today is the 10th anniversary of Tony Fenton’s death. Where has the time gone? I loved his afternoon slot on Today FM in the nought’s. I can’t remember when he left it. Today FM was great back then. RIP Tony.

Indeed, it really doesn't seem like 10 years. He was still doing the show up to 2013 or even into early 2014 anyway. Then he was out sick for extended lengths of time, Louise Duffy was covering for him.

The station is so different now, I can't imagine Tony fitting in with the latest incarnation of the schedule. I expect he'd eventually have been moved onto late evening shifts and later would have joined the likes of Phil Cawley, Ed Smith, Paul McCloone to the exit.

I only ever think of Tony being on 2FM, it just didn't seem right hearing him on Today FM and I think his energy was on a different level over at 2FM, certainly on The Hotline.

Tony was off sick from Today FM for a few stints before his passing, though as far as I remember he came back for just 1 day (could have been just a few days) to present his afternoon show and sadly was off sick again. And sadly that was it.

His final song played on Irish radio was Snoop Dogg / Justin Timberlake "Signs".

There was then of course his interview with Bono that aired after his passing.

Ian doing a special show about Tony tonight at 9pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,853 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Is this show live I wonder?

Whether it is or not, Ian probably hasn't been on the radio at this time of night since the mid 1980s on Radio 2.

    I doubt it.

Tom Dunne just mentioned Tony too. Think he said he's doing a small tribute to him later in show.

I listened to Ian and Mario. Brought back some nice memories.

You would wonder how the rest of the presenters on today fm feel with Dave Moore seemingly having the monopoly on interviewing all the “big” guests when they’re promoting movies and such. Him shoehorning in some vague Irish connection to every interview is brutal listening. Time to give someone else a go surely?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,597 ✭✭✭paddylonglegs

the other presenters would probably have to shoehorn the same stuff in. The celeb interviews seemed to start when Bauer took over. They must be connected to the “junkets” that are run when promoting various movies.

Fergal Darcy used to have the monopoly of interviewing various artists about a new album release etc. was generally decent listening

didn’t have the balls to ask DeNiro if he washes his legs in the shower or not because guess what?!?! DAVE doesn’t wash his legs in the shower!!!!!

Might as well be the Cathal and Dave show, with Cathal a Wish version of Dermot, who at least had comic chops.

I swear at this stage every show features some 'zany' thing that Cathal try-hard has latched onto, and hilarity ensues.

That fooker will be into meditation next.

Don't find him too annoying tbh. Maria on the other hand, an awful dose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭tallaghtjoe

Is he not embarrassed to still be asking this question? the laugh went out of it after the first couple of times. I cringe now anytime I hear it. I didnt hear the interview today, but TG he didnt ask it. Surely there is a better question to be asking in all those interviews he gets

Jason Donovan barely tolerating Dave’s tiresome questions this morning…..

it’s Jason Donovan, he’s 57 but lets take him right back and have him do a “how good a neighbour are you” quiz.

I really need to switch off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 77 ✭✭Bluewolf

nope! Not a shred of embarrassment or self awareness has our Dave.

He asked Jason Donovan this morning if he showers in the morning or the evening……

Sounds like I'm not missing much since I switched after Dermot left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,544 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I hate that show since Dermot left. In theory it shouldn't sound so different, I mean Dermot / Dave often did the show solo back in the day when one or the other was on holidays… and the show was fine back then, I enjoyed it for the most part. But not now. I can't listen to him, immediate switchover to PK on Newstalk at 9am.

Yeah I have migrated recently too and haven't missed it one bit.

What is his obsession with talking about showering? I arrived home from the school run yesterday and the radio was on Today FM in the kitchen. For the 20 minutes I was in there, all I heard them talk about was whether they shower in the morning or the evening.

Between that and Dave's "do you wash your legs when you shower?" it's really weird.

Music Master is a magnificent quiz and it keeps me listening. And occasionally then I listen for a little while after I might take in Dave's Bad Jokes or Ask Dave (because I'm a nerd). But I usually turn off by 11 cos I'm not too bothered by his interview. On the days where someone fills in for him and there's no Music Master, and I'm sure it's not on, I switch off.

I've been switching to Oliver Callan after Ian Dempsey for the last while.

Is he still asking people everyday if they wash their legs in the shower?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭jammiedodgers

Is there anything more annoying than getting listeners sending in voice notes of themselves singing. Cringe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,853 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

this thread has a good number of people who listen to dave moore, yet give out about the show and the features?

why are they so loyal to him ?

there are so many shows to listen to, at that hour of the morning

You're new to the concept of shared working spaces are you?

music master in an interesting thing, it was Ken Bruce's quiz on his BBC2 show and he took it with him to Greatest Hits Radio, which suggests that he owns the IP on it and he now franchises the format out to other radio stations (presumably only non UK). I've never heard of that being done before. Imagine if Larry Gogan could have done that with the Just A Minute quiz.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,570 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Ken Bruce's long standing music quiz is called Popmaster, which has now got an extended tv version on More 4. I might look up Dave Moore's music master online out of curiosity.

ah, thanks for that… maybe a bit of a rip off or homage so? i thought the jingles in it were a bit generic and not irish - never seen nor heard KB's shows and added 2+2 = 4.5!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭Chun the Unavoidable

i'm enjoying the 80s/90's floor filler show with Mr Cash Machine Barry Dunne - but is it live? I suspect it isnt but he is very good at it sounding live.

also, the schedule has "Today FM 90's" mon-thursday, and "Today FM 80's" Friday, did the specialist evening shows bite the dust or is the schedule incorrect ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭supereurope

Incorrect schedule - Dara Quilty was on last night with his soundtracks show. First time I ever tuned in and I'll be back…quite nice hearing songs you'd never hear on TodayFM usually, such as "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel.

Music Master earlier this week: someone was done dirty when the final round answer was David Guetta, who was not the vocalist on Titanium or whatever it's called, the one with Sia singing on it, and not David Guetta.
