Logged in to post almost exactly the same thing as yourself. I try and avoid 3Arena gigs, so wasn’t sure if the level of drinking and constant in-and-out of the crowd was typical of gigs there these days, or was it just an issue of people just there to hear the White Ladder songs and everything else can shove it.

Was surprised of how many albums didn’t get a slot on the playlist - Seemed he only played a few from Dear Life then it was just Century Ends, White Ladder (everything except We’re Not Right), New Day at Midnight, Life in Slow Motion, plus the covers. Haven’t checked if this is the standard for the tour, or bespoke for a predicted ‘Play The Hits’ Irish audience?

Anyway, agree that DG himself was superb!

DG exactly the sort of gig that would attract a load of one gig a decade welly munchers.

Assume there were a few Ole Oles?

Yes, didn’t take long either. Embarrassing stuff. I’d say he’s dreading the next gig in May, think that’s a Friday night so maybe won’t be quite as rowdy

Probably the worst concert I was ever at and I've been to hundreds. I must have had to stand up 500 times between people being late or getting drinks. Girls in front of us actually never stopped talking. One girl had 8 drinks during the gig. There was no respect anywhere for either DG or other people. DG must have asked the crowd five or more times to listen.

I think after the White Ladder anniversary tour, David Gray should have done a small venue tour and made it clear it was just stuff from his recent albums. For big venues do a greatest hits type, that should sort the retirement fund :)

Decent set from David and the band last night, crowd were restless alright, the weather and it being a Saturday probably didn't help, some real gobshites shouting at the stage.

Ryan Adams in Vicar Street. Ryan was in rambling, story telling mood tonight. Sometimes very funny, sometimes painfully honest. Most importantly the song performances were great whether on acoustic guitar or piano. He even plugged in with a bass player and drummer for a couple of scuzzy rockers. Nice to see a full house appreciate him.

That's good. So people managed to keep their mobile phones in their pockets so. That's good to see.

Was at gig Ryan Adams ,, people generally respected phone thing , but always a few clowns.

What a mad experience whole thing , more like a Samuel Beckett play, from brilliant to ridiculous.

Funny , painful and pure mad.

Whilst he is Funny and entertaining,, he literally forgot to do music at times. He ultimately ran out of time.

A very talented dude , but outrageously self indulgent and you can see he is a nightmare to work with.

To add to all that , he tried to make out that the #me too thing , was fake and then in almost same speeches trying to organise an after party for hot tall women at hotel.

He clearly is very troubled, did not know how ill he was.

    I'm glad I seen him , waiting a good 10 years. But,

Was absolutely chaos, but a great voice and deepness to his play. Growing up in America sounds terrible...broken families in **** towns...

Was on the couch in trackpants just out of the shower watching football. My brother messaged me saying he was on his way in to Kamasi Washington just before twenty past eight. I thought it was on tomorrow. Mad scramble but I got lucky with the Luas and got in for a beer and an okay spot.

Jazz, funk, hiphop and 70s soundtracks. Great musicians. Second time seeing him and I'd happily go again.

No chatting or annoying people just a celebration of good music.

Ryan Adams ADHD-fest last night was a hoot. Vocally he's still peerless.

Sending love to members of the first few tables who had to deal with the balloon-wielding goose for the first half. Did security run out of patience at the interval? He could have fhcked the whole night up.

Was surprised he made the 2nd night ? - sorry what is a balloon wielding goose ?

Gavin Friday at Vicar Street last night.

I'm obviously biased as I'm a big fan, but I found him very good. There is something magnetic about him, when he is performing I just can't take my eyes off him. 1 hour and 50 minutes of songs and the stories behind the songs. 4 musicians with him - long time collaborator Renaud Pion on winds (clarinets, bassoon, cor anglais, saxophone) was key in recreating the sound of his latest album, Ecce Homo, that dominated the setlist. 4-5 songs from the past catalogue, solo and Virgin Prunes, including an interesting, almost haunting, deconstruction of Caucasian Walk.

He promised that he won't disappear for another 10+ years, so here's hoping for more opportunities to see him live in the coming years.

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Nine Inch Nails, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Nova Twins

Some lad in the 3rd row (who I thought was high on something but people after said was autistic) waving a balloon, chatting to Ryan like it was a 1-on-1 show, saying how he missed his dead brother, moshing in his chair like he was a metal gig (during slow acoustic tunes) etc.

Was warned by security in the first half and then moved/thrown out for the 2nd half. Added to the, err, uniqueness of the evening.

It was!!! The setup was the fully seated one, so probably a bit less capacity? But he hadn't played his own gig in at least 10 years so the demand was there.

I don’t think any one there tonight was disappointed. That was great.

Makeshift’s guitarist has moved to strings a plenty and the sound is getting even better.

Chalk, right from the off. Belters!

Sorry @Gloomtastic! I don't do this on purpose, i swear!

Chalk in Whelans tonight, i think confirmed that i just can't warm to them. Third time seeing them and they've not built on the first time Upstairs in Whelans about 18 months ago. That night i thought they'd potential but wasn't entirely won over. The second time was at ATN last year and i left after 20 minutes utterly bored. Tonight i was checking my watch 25 minutes into their set and overall i found them pretty lame tbh. They just don't conjure up the expected noise and i realised so many of their songs are actually quite naff. They sound grand on record but live it doesn't click. I get a fierce bang of the 'Emperor's new clothes' off them. All style and no substance.

How many more years? How much time is there left? All the rivers reversed while you counted each step.

Orla Gartland at the Olympia tonight, for the biggest hometown gig of her career so far.

I found her very good. I was lucky and got an early entry upgrade for free, so I was upfront with the fans. No phones filming, no back and forth to the bar, everyone enjoying the music.

Great energy both from her and her band (2 bandmates, both women, proper girl power!) and the (primarily youthful) crowd. Songs from her two albums, with focus on the last one, a couple of older ones and a cover of Chappell Roan's Red Wine Supernova. She even played the drums in one song!

2 support acts, Hohnen Ford from London and Niamh Regan from Galway. 30 minutes slots for each of them. Both have good voices and they seem lovely. The acoustic setup (Ford with just a keyboard, Regan just with her guitar) isn't too appealing to me but I found both of them interesting - Ford was at the merchandise booth afterwards and I talked to her briefly while buying her album. She has a new song with Birdy, coming out soon.

With a ticket price of 33 euro, this was good value for money and a great way to spend a Saturday evening.

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Nine Inch Nails, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Nova Twins

No bother DW, Did you catch Makeshift Art Bar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,616 ✭✭✭Dreamweapon

I did indeed. Thought they were quieter than the gig at Borderline but i put that down to the size of the room. Again, they've got potential but whether they can hold my interest is another matter.

Paul Brady last night 12th April Vicar St. He was fantastic as usual.

How long ago was Borderline. Two months? See how they’ve progressed.

They’re doing it, then reviewing it and changing it. My kind of band.

Primal Scream in the Olympia, "just when i thought i was out, they pull me back in." After a series of ever decreasing quality gigs stretching back a number of years this was last chance saloon for me and the Scream. The only reason i bought a ticket was because i thought the latest album 'Come Ahead' was a return to form of sorts, so i figured let's try one more time. Glad i did. Thankfully they played quite a few off the new album as those greatest hits sets were just getting more and more depressing to me. They'll never reach the heights of yore whilst they persist with the one guitar set up though. Still, they had two backing singers, a dude handling sax/flute/percussion and what appeared to be Mickey Rourke on keyboards. A near 2hr. set with all the hits at the end. Personally i'd prefer to hear some other older songs rather than the usual but such is life. I actually find the weakest bits are when Bobby tries the ol' crowd interaction. It just feels so awkward. Overall though, a decent setlist, nice visuals, good sound where i was and a solid performance.

Swastika Eyes was a bit tame and I would have liked to hear more tracks from Vanishing Point or XTRMNTR but I get that they need to play the hits, particularly when they are devoting so much of the set to the new record. Maybe don't play Loaded and "I'm Losing…" in the same set.

I enjoyed the new songs. Deep Dark Waters is probably the highlight of the record for me and it sounded good last night.

    Good gig.
