I’m creating a new thread for this because the old one seems borked for everyone, and site admins don’t seem to be able to fix it. I’m hoping that a mod might move all the posts from the old thread into this one :)

    I guess not.

Kent Station has undergone a lot of work in the last two or three weeks. New signage has been erected for Platform 5A, 5B and 6. Digital displays have been installed at Platform 6, and the tap-on-tap-off Leap Card machines are waiting to be installed

I wonder what the timetabling will be like for Platform 6. Will all trains just go to Midleton or Cobh, and what is the plan for Platforms 1 through 3? I also wonder if the Dublin train will stop at Mallow too, since Kent and Dublin both have direct services to Tralee already, so transfer at Mallow on the Dublin train may no longer be needed

Seems a no brainer to me to keep Mallow station as a stop on on the Dublin train. Mallow is a very big traffic generator and a key connection. Removing it would massively reduce the frequency of connections for Kerry and looking into the future, Mallow would also be a connection for people from Blarney for example, to get onto the Dublin train since I don't expect the Dublin train to ever stop at Blarney station

All but one of the Dublin trains stop at Mallow currently and I don't see that changing anytime soon. If the frequency ever does go to a train to Cork every 10 minutes, maybe some InterCity's could skip Mallow, but I don't know would there be any time savings, more probably capacity savings.

My last post in the previous incarnation of this thread was to say that I have good and simultaneously bad news about Little Island and Glounthaune: both stations' car parks are currently oversubscribed on a daily basis. It's a great sign for ridership, but it's urgent now to increase station parking space in both.

What is Platform 3 used for? I know Platform 1 is Midleton, Platform 2 is Cobh, Platform 4 is Dublin, Platform 5 is Tralee/Mallow. I don't think I've ever seen 3 in use.

Cobh train sometimes leaves from there too (though more times for me it's been signed at platform 3 but rolled into 2 anyway).

I've closed the old one. I didn't see a point in moving posts as anyone can just read them there if they want. Also copying them in here risked copying whatever error is occurring across to the new thread.

    Link to the old thread:

It's worth noting that I added a comment to that thread to explain why I was closing it, but the comment disappeared afterwards! So instead I just edited the first post.

New steps to Platform 5b and Platform 6 in Kent Station. I'm surprised they didn't go for a ramp like Platform 5b, unless the lift to the lower level subway goes up to the platforms too? I'm so happy they went for actual subway tiles instead of the randomly aligned PVC subway tiles on the lower level

    No description available.

Also, this got me thinking. Is Kent Station the only train station in Ireland with an underpass? Most platforms are outdoor and so have an overpass or, as is the case for Dublin Pearse, Dublin Connolly and Tara Street stations, are elevated platforms. I don't believe Colbert, Ceannt or Plunkett have underpasses?

Lansdowne Road had an underpass when I worked nearby 2000-2004 but that was before the stadium redevelopment and I don’t know if it still does.

Off the top of my head, I know that Sandymount and Lansdowne Road have underpasses and both stations are at street level.

Some talk of the new Kent platform opening next Monday. I hope we soon see some new "straight through" schedules to go with it.

And that project team will be freed up, looking forward to seeing where they'll go next! Probably Glounthaune but wouldn't it be nice to see one of the new stations kicking off.

The new stations still have to have planning submitted so they're pretty far down the list for now unfortunately!

Nice milestone to have the through platform complete though. Starts to actually feel like Cork has a commuters rail "network" and not just isolated lines that are underutilized

There's a lot of work ongoing between Carrig and Midleton right now (I think mostly track dualling but maybe greenway works too) so there's some physical progress underway at least.

And C103 had this lovely detailed update in January: https://www.c103.ie/news/c103-news-and-sport/major-works-to-take-place-on-cork-rail-lines/

The new platform 6 is open but I'm not sure what services are actually using/going to use it. I was in the station yesterday and all Midleton/Cobh/Mallow services seemed to be using their existing platforms.

Something like this would take a bit of time. It only officially opened yesterday.

While they can place whatever train they want there, a bit of scheduling will have to be worked out to use it efficiently. Platform 6 will come into its own for through services particularly Cobh / Midleton to Mallow.

I Wouldn't be surprised if they hold off on through-running services until the next timetable review. Usually they wait to launch new stations/services until that point, unless they pre-emptively built it in to the timetable (i.e. For the Kishoge Station opening, timetables implemented months prior had time built in to allow for a stop at Kishoge)

    https://www.irishrail.ie/en-ie/news/official-opening-of-new-platform-6-at-kent-station

information about the new platform. Notably it had this bit about services using the platform, including plans for Mallow-Midleton services:

    • Services using the new platforms will be introduced on a phased basis. Initially, some Intercity and Midleton services will operate to and from the platform and some through services from Midleton to Mallow will be introduced over the coming months.

Importantly for Phase 2 (i.e. new stations): First Public Consultation to launch in coming weeks.
