You'll prob get full 5G bars and slow speeds. With that type of fringe reception, I'd recommend testing it out. You can always order a sim and pay for a month and not port your number until you've had a look.

My area shows as solid purple on that map. Despite that, I got less than 1 meg down in a speed test and the signal regularly dropped to 3G.

Yes - I had the same problem yesterday on eir mobile. It seemed to delay short messages from businesses such as 2-factor authentication providers. I was able to bypass the problem by forcing the phone to 2G and switching off WiFi calling, forcing the messages to be sent directly to the mobile network. When I spoke to eir customer care they knew about the issue, and it seemed to be fixed yesterday.

What speed should be expected from 4g LTE? I'm getting very erratic speed test results. In quick succession, 5mbs, 103mbs, 12mbs, 3mbs.

It's a wireless signal from a remote mast. Subject to variables like indoors/outdoors, distance from the mast, how busy that mast is at that particular time, etc.

Unlike fibre wireless spectrum has to be shared with all users.

That makes sense. Though the tests I ran were over a few minute timespan and everything else equal.

Wasn't a problem for years. Only reason it has become a problem now is frequent buffering on YouTube.

How far away are you from the mast?

Any obstructions between you and the mast?

    Are you testing indoors?

How well insulated is your house?

Two foot thick old stone walls?

I know what you're saying - how those factors would affect data speeds. I did a number of speed tests over a 5 minute time frame without any other changes that would affect speed. Got 5mbs, 103mbs, 12mbs, 3mbs, 31mb.

A bad wireless signal reduces data carrying capacity .

    This is new, isn't it?

I'm also with 48 and with them you can go 6 months without having to top up and you'd still be allowed to stay on your legacy plan (in my case, the €7.99 one).

Not new. I believe it's the exact same as eir in that in that your bill is generated then you've 2 weeks to pay that and then a further 1 week's grace period for the payment to be received. After this they charge €4.99 as a late payment fee.

It could be worse though as with eir proper it's a €18.45 fee!

48 not having a fee is because it is regarded as PrePay/PAYG and not PostPay/BillPay.

I don't think that was ever mentioned before. I must look at my old emails.

The late payment fee has been in place since they launched back in 2019. It might be that now they're starting to mention it on the payment reminder emails? It could be like sim replacements/eSim where they cost €5 officially but in reality they're free.
