how did that situation come about? BE must have got a really good deal on these buses to make it worth while shipping them over here from there? over the normal practice of buying vehicles from europe or the UK whether new and allowing for cascades, or second hand vehicles.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

They were mentioned in this forum some years ago I believe. They weren't a great success.

I can't remember full circumstances. I think BE needed to get their hands on a large number of buses as quickly as possible for the school fleet, and the opportunity to buy 300 second-hand from Singapore seemed like a good deal.

The year 2000 finds KR (KS) 9 parked at Mallow between duties on school runs.

This bus was new to CIE in 1985. Although allocated to the provincial fleet, it spent some time with Dublin Bus around 1988/1989. In the late-1990s it joined the school fleet in Cork. In 2008it was acquired for preservation.

2001 finds VR 20 parked at the bus station in Drogheda.

This was one of 55 VR Class coaches delivered to Bus Eireann in the year 2000. They were similar to the VP Class, except they had lower bodies and were mainly used on commuter routes. VR 20 was unfortunately involved in an accident in 2005, and was withdrawn the same year.

The bus is displaying route number 100. This was a common route number used on services between Dundalk or Drogheda and Dublin. Today it is used on services between Drogheda and Dundalk.

1982 finds D 491 between duties in Waterford.

This Leyland Atlantean was new to CIE in 1973, and was withdrawn in 1983.

Although labeled as D 431, it is probably D 491. D 491 was a Waterford bus, while D 431 was a Dublin bus. D 431 was new to CIE in 1972 and was withdrawn in 1988.

1990 finds EVH 6 parked on "The Ramp" at Connolly Station in Dublin.

This bus was new to CIE in 1986, and spent most of its career on Expressway duties. It spent its final years on school duties in County Cork (based out of Skibbereen Depot), and was lasted noted there in 2004.

The bus is branded for an Expressway service between Ennis, Shannon, Limerick and Dublin. Limerick, Shannon and Ennis are still connected by Expressway route 51/X51 but the service between Limerick and Dublin last ran in 2021.

2007 finds Bus Eireann VWM 8 in Cork, dressed for route 254 to Robert's Cove.

VWM 8 was new to Bus Eireann in 2000, being one of a ten member class. It was withdrawn in 2010, and was sold on to another Irish operator. In 2012 it was sold to an operator in the United Kingdom.

Route 254 operated between Cork and Robert's Cove, going via Carrigaline. In 2007, when this picture was taken, it only did two round trips on a Saturday. The route was withdrawn from the network in May 2010.

1986 finds the remains of E 164 in the depot yard in Donegal.

E 164 was new to CIE in 1964. It was withdrawn in 1984, and spent some time in the late-1960s on hire to the County Donegal Railway.

The ad on the side of the bus seems ambitious for this vehicle.

Behind the bus is school bus SF 32.

This bus was new to CIE in 1981. It was withdrawn by Bus Eireann in 1996, and was sold for scrap.

1999 finds KR 163 at the bus station in Drogheda.

This bus was new to CIE in 1985. This bus and KR 162 received all-over ads for Coca Cola, and spent about a decade in this scheme. By 1999 it was starting to look a little tired. The bus was withdrawn in the early-2000s.

1986 finds M 156 at the railway station in Skerries.

This bus was new to CIE in 1972. It was re-engined in 1980, becoming MD 156. Bus Eireann sold it to the Irish Army in 1990.

A number of provincial buses were observed at Skerries station that day, presumably doing rail replacement services. Currently Skerries only has one provincial service which operates during the week, at term time, to the college in Dundalk.

All those VPs were leased by Bus Eireann, only the later VP3XX coaches were purchased.

The initial batch, like the one pictured, with Plaxton Premiere bodies were manual transmission, not really appropriate for service work but loved by small British private hire outfits due to being cheaper to service.
