Lovely to see him pictured with Mart. Beautiful symmetry between them in the morning. Marty from 7 to 10, then Tubs brings up lunch. Something incredibly comforting about seeing them together. They're like an old pair of pyjamas or an old sock.

"They're like an old pair of pyjamas"

They're literally and metaphorically a pair of old jocks.

VRUK are approximately half way through a RAJAR quarterly book period and there is still nothing to suggest that they are witnessing some sort of turning point or improvement in listenership figures. The exiting of the radio station's PD signals that upper management are having to accept the reality that their approach to personality driven music radio is not working. Poor ratings - the exiting of the PD - the deputy content director and content manager answering to the director of audio... It is inevitable that the radio station's programming/presentation is going to have to be addressed along with a possible presenter schedule shakeup. The radio station's listener performance figures have been declining since last year and it's weekday midmorning show is clearly out of kilter with the radio stations domestic target audience and brand.

I am confident that they will at some point remove The Ryan Tubridy Show from their weekday schedule and place his midmorning slot onto Q102 solely, it's really only a matter of time.

That’s really all just your opinion. I’d trust the top bosses in a UK radio station over that tbh.

“Parting by Mutual agreement” is always a great sign 😂

Not personally, no. It’s a more general comment aimed at his detractors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,930 ✭✭✭GSF

not really on topic of discussing his show though is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,058 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

It was actually if you care to read the original comment.

Today’s show was interesting apart from one curious section where he rambled on a bit about the new Hyundai concept car, it felt like he was reading a particularly scripted PR Release at times. I wonder was this segment aired in the UK or just on Q102 as Hyundai sponsor the show?

Musically he played The Divinyls “I Touch Myself” today (haven’t heard that in a long time), and there was an awkward attempt at some sort of witty comment as he introduced The Verve’s “The Drugs Don’t Work”. Aside from that fumbled intro and pseudo ad though it was a nice, positive, and upbeat show - perfect for a mid-morning listen whilst working from home or dare I say a visit to the dentist. But honestly, if you don’t like the show the dentist is probably the worst place to listen to it as one cognitively negative experience is likely amplified by the other.

Mod: I'd just like to point out that speculation about a poster's identity or former account here is viewed as trolling across the site. You can expect a 2 point warning and ban if you post in this manner.

Bad start to the show this morning: radio silence for a good 30seconds after the news before the right button was pressed - is Raymond D’Arcy working in Q now? Obviously this is a production issue and not Ryan’s fault but you’d think such teething issues would have been long sorted out by now.

Ryan sounds positively chipper and upbeat this morning, starting the show with a

    Untitled Image

I wouldn’t have put him down as a Die Hard fan tbh.

don’t they have an emergency tape? 30 seconds silence should never happen on a radio station. News uk are a bit of a Mickey Mouse outfit

On dear. As much as I’ve changed my opinion on Ryan the broadcaster I cannot warm to the constant humble-bragging and name-dropping in his London Diary, link below:

    https://evoke.ie/2025/03/30/entertainment/ryan-tubridy-presenters-dull

I did say that though now a fan of his broadcasting style I would remain open to criticising him where I felt it was warranted. This week’s London Diary is I feel particularly egregious in that he yet again recycles his oft-told Macca stories (incl. the “exclusive” and “private” gig) and talks with it appears zero self-awareness of yet another junket that Universal Ireland for some reason keep inviting him too (this time Elton John). He talked exhaustively about this gig during the week too, incl. at one stage describing John’s solo piano play as “riffing”. I didn’t mention it on the thread as I’m really enjoying the show but there’s something about the payback for these things that makes me rather uncomfortable. This week we had an out of the blue and very strange monologue about a new Hyundai car which genuinely felt like he was reading a Press Release, and then the thanks for the Elton John gig, and it just feels like the negative elements for which he was rightly criticised in the past are creeping back in.

These pieces I feel do little for him in the way of a wider public rehabilitation as it paints him as being out of touch with the “man on the street”, and dare I say it as somewhat of a freeloader. It’s all very “look at me!” and attention-seeking.

Were I advising him on such matters I’d be hammering home the point to him that his image is in need of repair in many quarters and to concentrate on rebuilding that, not going down the “everything is awesome”, “my life is amazing”, “look at all the cool things I’ve done this week that you didn’t” and “here’s another super exclusive event I was invited to that you’ll never get an invite to” route. These pieces seem very contrived and forced. I really feel if he was more akin to his radio-self and personality there’d be more of a natural feel to this (without the Press Release-type stuff of course) it would help.

    I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed. ☹️

If there were to be a scandal involving a high profile British presenter, and said presenter was forced out of the country and then ended up in Ireland, I think that British people would be disgusted if they saw RTE taking advantage of that situation. Whatever ordinary people might think of Tubs, there's no doubt that he's being taken advantage of by the Virgin management. We were the ones who turned him into an experienced broadcaster, and now they're paying him peanuts(reported in the media as £50k-80k). Another example of Paddy being exploited in the UK. Irish people should be up in arms over this.

"Another example of Paddy being exploited in the UK."

The upside is, that having had Tubs there for the last two years, British broadcasters will be unlikely to want to "exploit" any more Irish talent.

@Bellbottoms how did the music sound over the speakers in the office? was the issue just on the studio portion of the show?

    ______

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Yes, it was just the studio portion that sounded off. The music sounded fine. I thought it might be a smart speaker or something. But clocked it on the way out. Regular radio, one of those modern bake a lite things.

I feel sorry for the British public, never getting to experience the unique and diverse talents of Ray, Baz, Kathryn, Joe etc. The trail was blazed for naught.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,656 ✭✭✭yagan

Watching wogan highlights last night just showed how poor rte has been as a talent developer.

They'd like to claim paddy keilty as their product but he'd done his own hard graft as a standup for decades beforehand and he knows to keep a ditch between his brand and rte.

Tubs as a product of rte being incapable and/or disinterested in gaining traction with a UK audience is illustrative of a license fee institutionalization.

At this stage in his career developing communication skills is probably too late.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

UTV did some work developing him. I remember he had a TV show in maybe 93 or 94. I can't remember the name. But he had a segment called the Big Rickety Wheel. He would have been 21 or 22 at the time. After that he went to the UK and the BBC took a lot of his edges off.

He has worked very hard since. Lots of presenting gigs for different stations.

Unfortunately, the UK has plenty of no-talents who seem to keep getting work, so they don't need to import our no-talents. Amanda Holden probably being the best example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,656 ✭✭✭yagan

His experience with different companies shows, whereas Tubs listening and pacing skills are still very underdeveloped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

I agree, he can adapt to the guest. I found Tubs can be very shaken and stilted if things go off script.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

Holden is a bit of a strange one. She started out as a so so actress married to Les Dennis. Then was able to parlay that along with a cheating scandel and a miscarriage into a media career.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 837 ✭✭✭supereurope

Yep, it was the Neil Morrissey cheating scandal that propelled her into the big time. So bizarre that was her big stepping stone.

Some more technical difficulties this morning, not sure if it’s limited to the Q102 broadcast only or across the whole broadcast. We had scrambled audio and then silence before an ad break was hastily popped in to allow for repairs. No mention of or acknowledgment of this on resumption of service though. Not Ryan’s fault of course but reflects quite badly on the show and station.

I know this has been coveted previously, but from before 11 and until 11:25 we’ve had a handful of words from Ryan - and this is not playing to his strengths. Essentially a half an hour with previous little input from the host.

Then take this “Legends at 11” segment where (if you’re not familiar with the show) Ryan (or rather the production team) play 3 songs after the 11 o’clock news from “legends”. The problem here is that this show is so chart and pop friendly that the legends segment is indistinguishable from the rest of the musical choices on the show. Today we had Diana Ross, Eric Clapton, and The Beach Boys as the legends, followed by The Cure (and I can see Coldplay are next)…..where’s the difference really?

Ryan also frequently displays his lack of musical knowledge or even opinion by rarely if ever commenting on these “legends”, today we did get a comment but it was related to the latter of the aforementioned triumvirate and it was something like “ah the boys, I can listen to them on a summers day”. He didn’t even namecheck them fully (just called them “the boys”), or indeed Ross or Clapton. Look I know he has his own favourites but even a few notes written by one of the production team would add something to this segment and give him something to talk about.

I’ve no issue with any of these bands or artists per se, but they’re all fairly mainstream. Creating and naming a segment like this however is completely unnecessary and just screams filler when the host doesn’t comment on them or offer some insight into why they’re “legends”. It really has no purpose. This isn’t a Ryan issue btw, this is on the producers and the station.

I don’t wish to sound overly critical here because on the whole I’m enjoying the show. I do feel however he’d be more suited to a more chat, less music show, and there’s a real element of square peg and round hold at play here. The station are forcing him into a format where his skills aren’t being fully utilised, and it’s unfair on him.

As a standard copy exactly policy NewsUK and Wireless radio stations incorporate the RCS Zeta playlist/radio automation system. For the simulcast it utilises a 'master' and 'slave' set up. VRUK normally being the 'master' station as the show is mostly fed from London with Q102 being the 'slave'. Those roles can be reversed when the show is fed from Dublin. When VRUK is the 'master' the initiation of all promos, jingles, announcements and adblocks etc. contained on the 'slave' server (Q102) are controlled from London. If something goes wrong on the Q102 end it is possible but unlikely that the production team in London are aware of it. Hence your witnessing of a technical hitch with no explanation or clarification from London.

Not hearing Ryan playing to his strengths from 20 minutes to the hour to 20 minutes past the hour really depends on who you ask. Some folks may want to hear more of him whilst some would prefer not to hear him at all. However, the radio stations format must be prioritised and it is predominantly a music station: Ryan Tubridy on a contemporary music radio station outside of breakfast is a poor match. Period!

It must be noted that Virgin Radio Network have rebranded Virgin Radio Anthems to Virgin Radio Legends which is the network's AC/Classic Hits/Gold offering and the purpose of that post 11 am segment is to promote that. The segment is also more compatible with the skillset of a presenter of limited music knowledge and also helps to fit more into a limited and generalised Q102 playlist. But let us be completely clear, Tubridy is not there to introduce or talk about the music that is being played, he is there to promote himself and his own brand for which at one point it was toys and now it is books, to the point that he is now subtly plugging the Bookshelf podcast.

This week saw the announcement of the departure of their PD. Personally if I were controller of programming at VRUK I would not be very happy with the radio stations RAJAR performances during the past year, the performance of Ryan Tubridy's presentation or the radio station's overall weekday 7am -7pm sound, that married with Katherine Thomas' poor contribution to the radio mess that is Q102.

Upper management at NewsUK are going to attempt everything to justify their decision for placing Tubridy onto a midmorning weekday prime slot when the presenter clearly is the square peg trying to fit into the round hole. Come RAJAR you can bet that they will not release individual presenter performance figures but you can also bet what is going on behind the scenes at VRUK is to put it mildly - interesting.

Thanks for your clarification on the master broadcaster, I’m too uncomfortable with the other word to repeat it however. Interesting nonetheless from a technical standpoint.

Whilst I do agree with you that there’s a bit of a mismatch at play here between his timeslot and music v talk %s of the show, I do think the latter part of your post is just your opinion though. I’d be more inclined to trust the top bosses at Virgin than a random anonymous person on the internet.

The Bookshelf Season 3 “dropped” (Ryan’s actual choice of words - very urban!) today. Gary Lightbody is the first guest. Whilst I like the light-hearted nature of the radio show I take my reading a little more seriously so this isn’t one for me but I feel it would be remiss of me not to let his many other fans know in case they missed it.

I like Mr Lightbody, and would be a fan of a lot of his music.

Would be interested to see his choice of books.
