And I am sure he has but for some strange reason Ryan seemed to fear that he would end up like Fredo Corleone? So whatever you do, don't ask Tubridy to go sailing out on your yacht.

I hear a lot of stories, I suppose they could be true...

I am still trying to figure out what he had to kill poor Fredo had they not moved passed his treason?

Because Michael knew that Fredo was a complete f__k up and a liability, and whether through incompetence or a deliberate act he would ultimately betray the family again.

I did a film studies course in London on a part-time basis when I lived there and this topic was the subject of great debate. I wrote a paper on it but Lord knows where that is - likely on one of the many hard drives lying in a box. If I find it I’ll send it on to you if you’re interested? Spoiler alert: I was pro-Michael’s decision btw.

On today’s show Ryan had Chris Smith (author of the newly-revived Enid Blyton property “The Famous Five”) in studio. I’m not sure today’s kids will be into the adventures of “Julian, Dick and Anne, George, and Timmy the dog” no matter how much they’re modernised; but I guess I can see a market for parents and grandparents who remember the Blyton books buying them for children and grandchildren. I had all of those books and even as a child I found them boring tbh, but then again I did read a lot. The author sounded very like the guy Stuart Clark from Hot Press who used to be on with Matt Cooper, but I haven’t listened to that show in a while so not sure if he’s still there anymore.

This is where Godfather Part 3 removes that motivation from the series, though as I have not seen Part3 in a few years I could be wrong, Micheal by trying to get out of the business over the next 10 - 15 years has killed is brother for no reason. But I agree if Micheal continues in the family business Fredo is a great liability, also one should the FBI want a witness.

Blyton is easy reading, lacks imagination. I can only imagine were they will take the series!

MOD NOTE: @RoTelly and @Peterdragon Please stay on topic. There is a movie forum where you can analyse The Godfather at length.

Why do women get overly annoyed about their age, or being asked it?

(Most) men don't? Not least bit offended.

    Insecurity?

Did not know Tubs was moonlighting on Times Radio….

Clicked into that Youtube video, a rare thing to see Tubridy content with an open comments section..

First comment: "How long will this freak show be allowed to carry on?"

Bit harsh I thought………..Then from reading the replies I realized the comment related to the Trump administration not Tubs!

I gave him another listen this morning, and I'm afraid it's still a 'no' from me.

Still talking too fast, sucking up spit and going over same stuff about himself, such as having an infants palette.

    Out again.

It is definitely becoming more of a problem as he attempts to cram more and more into his links and yet somehow he seems to be under the illusion that his having the ability to do so does not have a negative effect on his presentation and delivery.

    Post edited by nonetheless on

I think you’re being really harsh here. I accept that he’s not above criticism on the speed/pace of his delivery but I lay the blame at the producer’s and the station’s door on this. He should either have more time dedicated to monologues and interviews between the music and at breaks, or have a more chat show style show with less or no music altogether. His need to cram so much in at pace is I feel more enthusiasm and a desire to please than anything else.

Fault is his, not the producers. He has a certain time slot to get his chat in, it's up to him to work out in advance what he wants to say and get himself used to speaking slower and more distinctly.

Odd that a man who is nigh on a quarter of a century into the job has to be told this.

He got into this rut because of who he was, and where he worked. Zero critiscism, zero self awareness of how mediocre he is and zero initiative to better himself. He should try better now, but he's so used to not having to put the effort in.

As it is the first slot post breakfast it should be a template as to what the radio station will sound like for the rest of the day. From the get go it is very important for Tubridy's links to sound naturally fluid and polished. Outside of delivering a regular interview it is quite clear that he is unable to manage straight forward regular or speed links which are fundamental to adhering to that template. Because of this the radio station's overall weekday presentation is in a state of audio disorder and this will register subconsciously with the listener.

Although nothing wrong with books per say, the overuse of the medium to suit a presenter who just decided to make it their mantra because of their need to bring 'something' to the table to make up for basic presenting difficulties elsewhere, is now after more than one year also wearing thin on the listener who goes to the radio station at that time of day for music.

The producer under direction of the PD may attempt to clean things up a bit but apart from Ryan Tubridy's mammy fans, VRUK's core listeners are not, never did nor will they ever buy into it. NewsUK are only going to see further drops on their RAJAR books if this auditory mess is allowed to continue.

On the day itself, my radio show came live from my London local, The Devonshire in Soho.

    https://evoke.ie/2025/03/23/entertainment/ryan-tubridy-st-patricks-day

Really interesting to get such an insight and background into what makes him tick and how he prepares his show. He's promoting Ireland and Irish producers in the UK. He's obviously networking very well and seems to be quite well known on the London scene. Would be interesting if these articles were put together in an anthology for the Christmas book market.

    Communication was the greatest fatality

In hindsight, I regret not buying Volume 1 of “TUBRIDY” last Christmas. It would have made for an enjoyable accompaniment to this year’s edition, and I would have a nice souvenir that charts Ryan’s growth and deveoplment as both a presenter and a human since he departed RTÉ.

I was in the Far East for most of last week and due to the time differences I was unable to listen online. I’m looking forward to a healthy dose of on-air positivity from Ryan and some popular chart topping hits from the 80s until now this morning as I attempt to wake from my jet lag slumber. I’ve missed his show.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

That was my experience when I heard his first show- I don’t think I’ve listened since- so obviously this is the style of presenting the radio show is implementing - yeah it’s not for me either - maybe it appeals to a younger generation or something but I’d doubt Ryan’s demographic is the 18-35 group?

I’m a little confused by Ryan’s last segment. After making quite a fuss some time ago to say he does judge a book by a cover and that he won’t read one with a “bad” cover, he just revisited a piece he stated he covered last week about a book with a bad cover that he enjoyed. Somewhat inconsistent? 🤷‍♂️

They’re playing Dire Straits “Money For Nothing” now, I suspect the F word will be removed, but I’ll wait and see. Yes indeed, they played an edit.

That should be his theme tune.

Even as a new fan, I must say that was well played.

I see Chris Evans turning up on the Mike Graham programme on Talk Radio. I wonder how long it will be before Tubridy is forced to do his turn on that station.

I was at the dentist today and, once again, they had Tubs playing in the background. I caught about six songs and three segments of Tubs speaking. A few things stood out to me, and I’m wondering if anyone else noticed similar issues.

First, is something off with the mics or the production? The audio didn’t sound clear—it felt kind of filtered and maybe compressed, but only when he was speaking. The music, on the other hand, sounded fine.

In the first segment, Tubs was talking about Oasis and their ticket seller being reprimanded for selling "special" tickets that were actually no different from regular ones. He was speaking really fast and stumbled over his words. It sounded like he was about to criticize both the band and the ticket seller, but halfway through, he seemed to realize that wouldn’t go down well and backtracked. It was awkward.

In the second segment, he spoke too quickly again, and he was hyping up an interview with someone he was talking to later. He mentioned Fionnula Flanagan being in a movie, but then rambled on about how he and his mom had met her at "The Gate." There was no explanation for the UK audience about what "The Gate" is, which could confuse listeners who aren’t familiar with it. It seems like he assumed everyone knew what he meant.

The third segment was even more unclear. There was some drilling noise in the background, and I couldn’t catch much of what he was saying. It sounded like the timing was off, and he was cut off mid-sentence by a song. He came across as ill-prepared, disorganized, and honestly just kind of all over the place—constantly speaking too fast without really making his point.

I wasn’t a fan of the RTÉ radio show before, but the short segment I heard today was genuinely awful.

Bit insensitive of the dentist. You're literally at the dentist, possibly getting teeth pulled and they have Tubridy on in the background to add to the misery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,651 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Not just in the background but loud enough to be able to give a detailed report on the audio quality from the microphones. And to notice the difference between the quality on six songs and three speech segments. And to give a run down on Tubridy's speech impediments and faulty presentation style. Even through the drilling noises.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

I can’t think of anyone better to have on in the background than Ryan for a dental visit tbh. You’d get to hear his upbeat and positive voice, humorous anecdotes and stories from some great guests, amd regular book recommendations all topped off with some top tunes. Going to the dentist is rarely enjoyable, but having Ryan on would make it much more so. Honestly I think some of you are just criticising for the sake of criticising at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,651 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

    Thank you for being honest.

Have you ever been to the dentist before? They do not go straight to drilling.

I go in, the dental nusrse sets me down. Gives me glasses leaves.

Dentist comes in maybe five minutes later does an x ray, leaves to go review it.

Comes back, inspects my teeth after looking at the x ray.

Injects novacane of what ever to number. Leaves for another ten minutes.

Comes back and gets to work. Drilling only starts then.

"criticising for the sake of criticising at this stage."

Is this directed at me? I haven't commented on the show in months.

This is the first time I have heard it in maybe four months. The last time I heard the show I was also at the dentists. I thought I would share my take on the show.

No, I couldn't hear anything through th drilling noises. Which is why post stopped then.

Perhaps you could engage with the actual content of my post. As opposed to questioning its veracity.
