Outdoor socket.

hi

I want to install a simple 3 pin outdoor socket but want to try and keep it relatively simple.
as in I don’t want to really run a fresh cable from the fuse board all the way to the outdoor socket.

Could I utilise an existing indoor socket, drill through to the outside directly opposite the indoor one and run the outdoor socket off this already installed indoor socket? ……….not even sure if it’s an option or if I’m making sense.

I will get an electrician to do this but just checking my options before I do.

Just buy an outdoor socket kit which has a 3 pin plug terminated on the flex. Drill hole and plug it into said socket.

You can get the kit posted above but if you are planning to use this to charge an EV then get an electrician to do something permanent, there could be potential issues if you are running other high load appliances off the same circuit.

Oh nice. Would this be ok to charge an electric car at my in laws house. It would only be in use overnight every few weeks. So might get 10 hours usage in a whole month.

I have already used the indoor socket multiple times to charge the car and I have monitored the pins and plug and none of them got hot to the touch after hours of charging.

This potential setup means I would not have to leave a window open and can just plug in directly to the outside wall socket.

Yes what you say exactly, provided neither the outside socket or the one you're connecting to is under a particularly heavy load.

No this isn't a good use case for this at all btw. It is a high draw but it's also continous for hours. These types of adaptions are not meant for EV long high draws.

Get this wired properly please. It's a fire risk

Those granny cables are usually around 10A.

Standard 2.5sq cable would be fine.

Just make sure whatever ring or radial you're tapping off has an appropriate MCB .

I'd add a fused spur to the side of the inside socket and then connect the outside socket to that. Allows the outside socket to be turned off when it's not in use as well as having it's own fuse.

when you say this, do you mean a dedicated 2.5sq cable directly from the fuse board to the outdoor socket? or just from the already existing internal 3 pin socket to the outdoor socket?

Just the existing socket.

Current rating for 2.5sq is min 20A, so you see them on a 16A MCB for radial and 32 for ring.

I tapped off our hob/oven for the outside socket. The radial is on 4sq cable, with the spur on 2.5sq.

Opened up the isolator switch and drilled through the wall from the back of the box. Attacked the cable to the switched side. Means I can turn off the outside socket from the oven isolator.
