In a related note, Canada goes to the ballot box in April as a snap election has been called today. What was a comprehensive lead for the conservatives, some polls give the liberals a chance at a majority now, which is wild.

It seems Trump has been good (not intentionally) for the liberals to get their campaign back on song. The conservatives haven’t come out to say they are against what the Trump administration has threatened Canada with, even today a recording of the Alberta premier saying that Polivere aligns more with the newer American way of doing things. That’s almost political suicide.

Carney must feel he has a chance at winning by calling that election now. I hope he is right and it works out for him.

Momentum is with him and the liberals right now, he has been incredibly strong against Trump so far and has said the right things.

I do hope the momentum sticks with him.

Congress has made zero steps so far to reduce the Corporation tax though. We may see it in the budget for October, but there has been no sign yet.

I presume Canada vote for the party, and not the president like they do in the US

Its bizarre that Carney is Prime Minister whilst not being a member of Parliament.

If he doesnt win the election it will be a short term for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,158 ✭✭✭eire4

Lets hope it works out and the momentum keeps working in the Liberals favour and Carney is Canadian PM for the foreseeable. Clearly he is very knowledgeable from an economics stand point. I think he will do a very good job for Canadians and given his European connections can be a good bridge to Europe as hopefully the connections and co-operation between the EU and Canada can grow significantly in the coming years as a counter weight for both us and the Canadians to the US turning towards authoritarianism and the fact that neither of us can trust and or rely on the US any more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,564 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

And if he does win it, it’ll be a remarkable feat for him and the liberals.

You are confusing investment in companies with the investment that companies make. US companies will be very slow in investing outside of the US with looming trade wars, especially in manufacturing where the US was the target market.

They didn't run on trans or gay issues. In fact at Democratic convention not a single trans or gay person the whole week appeared on stage, not one.

Harris ran an extremely right wing campaign, one much further to the right than last Tory one in Britain in fact.

John Stewart had good piece last Monday why Dems are losing. Republicans are playing grand master chess while Dems are eating clay...

    You got it backwards

Companies won’t invest in US because of uncertainty

They do however still need to turn a profit for their owners who are investors, can’t make a profit in a circus

US industrial construction which went vertical under Biden has now collapsed especially since things like CHIPS act are on chopping block

My exact words were "he's not killing anyone yet, but he's having his own version of a final solution". It's an accurate description and in no way diminishes what the nazis did.

You keep saying the markets have crashed but they really haven't…yet. There is huge scope for downward pressure.

My own opinion is that the markets were massively overpriced when Trump took over. Years of heavy borrowing didn't help.

Take the Dow Jones for example. It is up 6.8% since this time last year. That is still a decent return on investment.

The Nasdaq is also 8.5% since last year. It's up 137% in the past 5 years.

People and funds have certainly lost money since the idiot took over but pensions coming within 5 years of maturing should always be de-risked to safer investments.

We may well see a real market crash but we ain't seen one yet.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Hang on - you're saying someone in the Trump administration is being an obvious flaming hypocrite?

So TSMC didn't just announce a $100bn investment in the US? J&J didn't just announce an investment of $55bn? Uncertainty will slow investment but if a company believes that the US are going to apply tariffs on imports then you they will have to consider investing in the US if you don't have enough production to supply US demand.

    keyword being “announce”

Their aim is to grab headlines and then do nothing for next four years

Which is the smart thing to do as Trump doesn’t care about reality

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,826 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

The key is to make the announcement so you can carve out an exemption to current tariffs and ride it out till the next administration.

As you say the key word 'announce', back in 2018 Apple announced $350 billion in investment, then $430 billion under Biden and now most recently $500 billion. In the case of Apple, they will say or 'announce' anything to get tariff exemptions.

Ah I see you've swallowed the Irish govt propaganda. MNCs are here for the tax advantages and that's it. The highly skilled workforce line that's trotted out is a fiction, Irish workers are largely not skilled in the areas where MNCs have vacancies and their posts are filled my migrant labour. English speaking, well most of the continent is bilingual and also in the single market.

Ireland's advantage is that it's a stable country with labour and tax laws that favour businesses. That's it.

Ah it’s propaganda, but you can only prove that with conspiracy theory. Sound, bud.

It's not unusual for people who have huge egos to have an over inflated opinion about their appearance. He probably looks in the mirror and sees an adonis looking back at him.

I wonder does the ‘ world’ and the Americans realise the devastation that this P—-CK is causing and will cause going forward to the detriment of MOST of us. Imagine what could be done with all the finance and energy that is being used to establish Trumps agenda and spent on all the wars - especially in Ukr and Gaza to address some of the world’s social problems

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,103 ✭✭✭Field east

Most big and maybe not so big American companys’ would do anything that would please Trump - if only the get him off their backs/ let on that they have BIG investments in mind and make such announcements which Trump loves to hear and announce same to his base.

I WONDER WHEN WILL ALL THESE COMPANYS START PUTTING SHOVELS IN THE GROUND !!!!!!!!!!??????????

5 trillion wiped out just like that and still no bottom in sight

That’s reality it happened and you instead focus on “potential” announcements which may or quite likely may not happen especially if China invades Taiwan

You can’t build and run an economy on incels, neo Nazis, peados, criminals, ultra religious, druggie oligarchs and other deplorables that are part of Trump MAGA cult

They basically destroyed NIH and are going after education and stealing money from university current accounts

Where will innovation come from in the MAGA world? Was listening to a pod how an NIH grant into basic science research about lizard in Arizona desert led directly to the drugs that made NOVO and LLY hundreds of billions in weight loss and diabetes medication. All of that research gone now

Hell even the military is cutting back while likes of Lockheed and Boeing are begging US “allies” to not cut orders

Ah you are young and probably have no experiences but you are clearly in the denial stage

    IMG_5750.png

Trump has taken a wrecking ball to the best US economy ever for ideological reasons

I am struggling to think of any upside potential in next 4 years while the risks are increasing by the day proportional to the volatility and bad news

I think you completely missed the point of my post and then flooded your reply with 'stuff'. Does every post have to reference the Nazis these days? I bet I am a lot older than you and I have seen a fair few market crashes and recessions. You seem to suggest the market has already crashed.

    To simplify my post again..

Nasdaq up 8% YoY. Dow Jones up 6% YoY. Market has not crashed yet but has potential to. I would still be shorting it to make a few quid.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

I ain’t gonna mince my words and I am not anywhere near the left wing of the political spectrum

But I will call out Nazis for what they are for as long as I have free speech and live in a free republic

like I said you are in denial, how many more zig Heils would it take to admit that US is sliding down a dark path that has been well traveled
