Yup, not really the same rates at all @the_amazing_raisin

Looks Energia D/N is the way to go for now.

Damn, I mentally had the VAT included rate as the ex VAT rate

I forgot how good that BWG deal was

Yeah it's a nice 16.5% price increase. Balls to that, I'll be flipping to Energia next month and using the savings to buy some emerald park tickets

Really interesting to hear a real world example. As you say takes a change of habit, but once it becomes the norm then you reap the benefits of savings. Those savings would be amplified when you compare that to running 3 ICE vehicles.

Hi Folks My contract is up in two weeks and i havent decided whether i will get an EV car around September 50/50 what contract should i be considering to look at , thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,524 ✭✭✭wassie

You should get a plan that suits your needs now. Otherwise you are selecting a plan based on a best guess.

You will be half way through that contract and your still undecided if your getting an EV. If you do get one, then you will need a couple of months to make the adjustment of using an EV and changing your habits to suits.

Once you have a bit of data, selecting the correct plan will be easier. By that stage you will be in your last couple of months of a plan and plans/rates on offer may be very different to what they are now or they may be similar. Many plans have cash back offers that will negate any early exit penalty (which typically is only €50 in any event).

As @the_amazing_raisin posted above "….the worst you lose is some time where you could potentially be on a cheaper rate but it's worthwhile making an informed decision"

In EnergyPal, is there a way to exclude a specific day in the Usage data?
I know you can do it in Usage Editor for 30min blocks, but I want to exclude Sundays completely (we have EI's free weekend day at the moment), and then see what the recommended plan would be.

Otherwise,I assume the only way is to manually edit the csv file myself?

The reason is that we currently charge both cars on Sundays which does us for the week, but now with going in to work 2 days a week and having free charging at work, there isn't really the need to do much/any charging at home.

I noticed a possible error with energypal. When looking at the energia tariffs it says the standing charge is €300.91 but when I look on the energia site the same smart tariff is only €236.62 making the saving even greater as they are top of the list when energypal does it's thing with the HDF file.

I thought it might be a VAT thing but no, the €236.62 includes VAT.

Are you sure you're not on the rural standing charge? I only found out I was after I used energypal. It'll say DG2 on your bill

Ah bollocks that must be it. I am indeed in a rural area, didn't realise energia were showing me an urban SC.

EDIT: I was indeed looking at the urban SC.

If you move to that energia tariff that also gives free charger with certain brands, Kia, jeep, Fiat to name just a few, is it easy enough to switch out of it if you're not happy with it?

Is it the same 50 euro early breakage fee or is there more terms and conditions considering a free charger was given?

Completely hypothetical question, it could be a fantastic tariff

What potentiallly then would be the one at moment so ?

If you have a smart meter then download your usage data from the ESB networks site and upload it to energypal.ie and it'll give you the cheapest plan

If your aren't on a smart plan then make sure to select the non smart plans to see the full list

Once you change to a smart plan you cannot go back to the non smart plans. Be sure this is what you want before signing up to one

If you check your bill there should be a. Meter code starting with MCC and 2 numbers. It's usually beside your MPRN

01 is the old 24 hour meter

02 is the old day/night meter

    I think 12 and 15 mean you're on a smart plan

I have a smart meter but my meter code is still MCC02, indicating I'm still on a day/night plan

If you have a smart meter you can create an account with esbnetworks.ie to download your meter data, it'll be a HDF file with your 30 min readings

You can also see your readings on the dumb meters but it'll be the ones the meter reader supplied, so not much use

Thanks Amazing raisin i seem to be 01 the old 24 hour meter, even though i have a smart meter , and i have donloaded the HDF file,

Why do they not let you change back if you sign up to a Smart plan ? is it worth it then

My parents getting new car this week, energia offer of free charger comes with the car, they already have a charger at home is there any problem getting the charger installed on my sisters house instead of theirs?

I've seen some posts on this being possible before I think but can't find them now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,914 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Long story short they want everyone on TOU tariffs to discourage electricity consumption during peak hours

There's a bunch of reasons behind this but the net effect is that ESB Networks and the CRU are steadily trying to get rid of the older non smart plans

In order to determine if any of them are useful, particularly with an EV, you can do what I did and try to set your appliances to run from 2am until between 4am and 6am. That's when all the cheaper smart plans operate

You can then upload your HDF file to Energy Pal after a while and see what it recommends. In my case it wasn't really worthwhile because the rates outside the EV charging time were a lot more and I couldn't avoid them, so I'm sticking with the older Day/Night non smart plan for now

It actually ends up around €60 more expensive for me but I get 9 hours of cheap electricity that way. Can fit a lot of stuff into that time

If ESB Networks were serious about this they should incentivise homeowners to install batteries to charge at non peak times and discharge at peak times. We’ll be waiting…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,914 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

SEAI did have a battery grant but it was gotten rid of after 1 year. Can't exactly remember why but I think it was down to battery prices suddenly going up by the grant amount

You could argue that ESB networks are already incentivising homeowners through cheaper rates. The issue is the wholesale prices are still too high, pretty sure Pinergy is losing money on that 5c rate at night

We need more renewables to push the off peak prices down

On average how much does it cost to charge a normal EV for one charge.?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,984 ✭✭✭granturismo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Battery size in kwh x rate per kwh

Mine is 77kwh battery and some ev rates are as low as 7c per kwh so a fiver for about 400kms on the overnight charging windows

Normal night rates about 13c or something so a tenner to charge for 400kms

Day rates about 25c so about 20 euro to charge

That's for a big battery EV, smaller ones could be 60, 70, 80% of the above costs but less driving distance per charge

So anywhere from 1.5c per km driven to about 5c per km

    Got first bill off pinergy.

According to the bill I have used:

    157.294kWh Standard
    751.909kWh Car Time (2am to 5am)

However if I analyse the data coming from esbnetworks I can see:

    30.96kwh Standard
    839.18kwh Car Time (2am to 5am)

Anyone experience similar? This isn't something I'll have to check monthly is it?

coming off flogas BWG too, what’s the latest rate with BWG, using 23000 kw a year (2 ev/geothermal heatpump)

    Thnks

As far as I can tell, that only applies to the EV plan. The other plans don't seem to have that limitation.

What does BWG stand for? I see it mentioned here all the time
