Super interesting - thanks for sharing. I've just gotten a smart meter but still in the 30 day activation period before I can select a smart plan.

Your exercise, although with many different variables to my own household (no solar or batteries) sort of confirms what I've suspected that EV plans have too shorter window during the cheapest period to be effective enough to offset the expensive ones.

Did you previously get a letter from them notifying you about the offer ending and the subsequent move to standard rates?

Hoping for some good news as I'm off that plan on 31-03 as well.

how does it work out 200 euro cheaper, is it the standing charge? (I think the day and night rates are essentially the same)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,144 ✭✭✭Exiled Rebel

Interesting. No email yet although my BWG plan doesn't come to an end until 31.03.25

    Waiting on my email too.

I suspect that the EV window will be too short for us as we have three EVs to charge. At the moment, once a week for us all is enough, but would need two of the cars to be plugged in twice a week in 'no travel' weeks. Add to that current load of the washing machine/dishwasher/dryer. We also have the nightly charging of a 5kW battery and it makes me think life's too short for 3/4 hour windows!

Is the renewal offer from Flogas a fixed rate? The Energia plan may be slightly cheaper now but while the discount is fixed, I don't think the rate is fixed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,132 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

The volatility in the market is more or less subsided now, so fixed rates less of a premium then they used to be.

Don't forget, obviously fixed rates won't move if unit rates get cheaper.

The link is personalised so I can't send it on, you'll renew it for me if you click it 😂

Here some screenshots of the email, the subject was Stay and Save. In Gmail it got put in my Promotions category

Notice the new rates are rounded to the nearest cent, I got an email later explaining that was a mistake and the rate won't change

Yeah I got that letter about a month ago I think, it mentioned the standard rates and made no mention of continuing the offer

I only know about this email because of the follow up email saying there was a mistake in the original

This is based on Energy Pal, but I don't see any reason it'd be wrong

Rates were slightly cheaper, standing charges was cheaper, FIT was higher so a combination of those I'd say

I think in my case it would work with 20-30kWh or more of battery storage and certainly the guys with big batteries are making money off those plans

If I could try it for a year I'd go for it but the fact that I can't go back to a D/N rate is what's putting me off for now. It isn't worth losing the flexibility of the longer night rate

I'd definitely recommend others to try out the same exercise, the worst you lose is some time where you could potentially be on a cheaper rate but it's worthwhile making an informed decision

I'm hanging on for that update letter/email so. I think I would stay with them if the BWG rates persisted, otherwise it looks like Energia's D/N plan for me.

Isn't the night rate on the energia one just as long? Not the EV plan now but the one with the similar pricing to the Flogas BWG (but with a smalelr standing charge)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,547 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Oh yeah, I had another post earlier where I was simulating the Energia EV plan for the past few months to see if it was worthwhile. The answer was that it is around €60 cheaper than the typical Energia D/N meter rate

At the moment I'm on the Flogas BWG offer, probably going to change to Energia next month

Like many of you I'm also on the Flowgas BWG offer due to expire on March 31.

The Energia Day/Night offer is the best for changing for me.

Are they still charging increased unit rates for excess over 3,000 kWh day and 2,000 kWh night in each two monthly billing period? It applied to me when I was with them previously but can't find any reference to it on their website now.

Those aren't the current BWG rates though - they're noticeably higher. It's also variable, not fixed. Or have I missed something?

It depends on mileage and home setup, but we are managing 3 EV’s also, all on the 4 hour Energia window, Just needs aome habit changes really.

One EV gets charged 2 to 3 times per week, and the other two EV’s 1 or two times per week, we managed it fine over last 3 months. 15kw Battery is charged every night to full, starting at minimum 10% and is at 100% just before 5am, so we time appliances from 5 am. We also have water heating timed every night at 5am.

We have been exceeding the Energia 1000 units per bi monthly threshold, by around 600 units, but the blended average rate is still quite low at 7.97 inc vat. The Energia day/night - night rate is 13.49 inc vat for up to 2000 units per bi monthly billling cycle,it does add a lot more flexibility, 9 hours versus 4, but it comes at a significant extra cost, thats a difference of €88 every two months (1600 x unit rate difference of 5.52inc vat)or an extra cost of €530 annually.

The 4 hour Energia window is manageable, but for us at least the 3 hour one is a non starter, and EI’s 2 hour window is a joke.

If you look at the last table there's a column "proposed loyalty rate" which is approximately the same as the BWG rate

Although I'm looking now at the terms and conditions and it is actually a bit higher

    Screenshot_2025-03-13-16-30-19-26_3aea4af51f236e4932235fdada7d1643.jpg

It's still a bit below the current new customer offer but a bit off the BWG rate

I think my mistake was that I thought they had rounded up by accident when they actually rounded down

My current rates with BWG are this, all with VAT included. Day/night meter Urban

    Day 25.48
    Night 12.35
    standing charge = 331 Euro

According to above, I think its

    Day 29.69
    Night 14.39
    Standing charge = 331 Euro

again all including VAT, so a nice increase over a years usage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,132 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Yup, not really the same rates at all @the_amazing_raisin

Looks Energia D/N is the way to go for now.

Damn, I mentally had the VAT included rate as the ex VAT rate

I forgot how good that BWG deal was

Yeah it's a nice 16.5% price increase. Balls to that, I'll be flipping to Energia next month and using the savings to buy some emerald park tickets

Really interesting to hear a real world example. As you say takes a change of habit, but once it becomes the norm then you reap the benefits of savings. Those savings would be amplified when you compare that to running 3 ICE vehicles.

Hi Folks My contract is up in two weeks and i havent decided whether i will get an EV car around September 50/50 what contract should i be considering to look at , thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,041 ✭✭✭wassie

You should get a plan that suits your needs now. Otherwise you are selecting a plan based on a best guess.

You will be half way through that contract and your still undecided if your getting an EV. If you do get one, then you will need a couple of months to make the adjustment of using an EV and changing your habits to suits.

Once you have a bit of data, selecting the correct plan will be easier. By that stage you will be in your last couple of months of a plan and plans/rates on offer may be very different to what they are now or they may be similar. Many plans have cash back offers that will negate any early exit penalty (which typically is only €50 in any event).

As @the_amazing_raisin posted above "….the worst you lose is some time where you could potentially be on a cheaper rate but it's worthwhile making an informed decision"

In EnergyPal, is there a way to exclude a specific day in the Usage data?
I know you can do it in Usage Editor for 30min blocks, but I want to exclude Sundays completely (we have EI's free weekend day at the moment), and then see what the recommended plan would be.

Otherwise,I assume the only way is to manually edit the csv file myself?

The reason is that we currently charge both cars on Sundays which does us for the week, but now with going in to work 2 days a week and having free charging at work, there isn't really the need to do much/any charging at home.

I noticed a possible error with energypal. When looking at the energia tariffs it says the standing charge is €300.91 but when I look on the energia site the same smart tariff is only €236.62 making the saving even greater as they are top of the list when energypal does it's thing with the HDF file.

I thought it might be a VAT thing but no, the €236.62 includes VAT.

Are you sure you're not on the rural standing charge? I only found out I was after I used energypal. It'll say DG2 on your bill

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,144 ✭✭✭Exiled Rebel

Ah bollocks that must be it. I am indeed in a rural area, didn't realise energia were showing me an urban SC.

EDIT: I was indeed looking at the urban SC.

If you move to that energia tariff that also gives free charger with certain brands, Kia, jeep, Fiat to name just a few, is it easy enough to switch out of it if you're not happy with it?

Is it the same 50 euro early breakage fee or is there more terms and conditions considering a free charger was given?

Completely hypothetical question, it could be a fantastic tariff
