The Sexton situation was spectacular mismanagement by the IRFU, the likes of which we have not seen since.

On a pure financial level, it will be difficult to compete with 600k£/700k€ but I don't really believe that figure. Though if it is true it explains the crappy financial situation of the English clubs.

I'd be very surprised if Crowley left, provided the IRFU don't lowball him. He seems to possess the kind of resilient and determined character to be a world class outhalf. I think he'll rightfully believe he has the ability and will have the opportunity to take the jersey back from Prendergast.

when Donnacha Ryan was allowed to leave, it didn’t go down well to say the least.

If the IRFU don’t manage to keep Jack in Ireland, this will cause untold damage to the “team of us” mantra that’s bandied about so much.

But will he be given the opportunity?

He hasn't been given it during this 6 nations. Assuming they parachuted Sam in to get game time to "develop", why is that going to change in the next year or two?

They didn't seem interested in giving Jack time at 10 regardless of Sam performances. Which shows that the jersey wasn't up for grabs.

Frawley backup to Sam Prendergast for Ireland, and JJ Hanrahan to be first choice at Munster.

absolutely, i also completely agree that this is very unlikely to happen in this case

but the Sexton situation happened either way, despite how unlikely it was

while a bit hyperbolic all the same, it could be argued that the OH situation since the AIs has been mismanaged also (dont really want to start this debate again ideally), just by the management/coaching team rather that the overall IRFU

the idea that JJ and Zebo were going to leave was laughed at too

so again, i really doubt there is much in this at all. but if it turned out the be true then i also wouldnt be astounded

in terms of money, it seems a bit high definitely but pollard was on that apparently so it wouldnt be out of the question if they think he is worth it. not being on international duty would mean they would get their moneys worth too

My point was more that I think Crowley will (rightly) believe that he is good enough to force his way back in. It takes a hell of a lot of resilience and self belief to get to where he is - a title winning outhalf - I don't see him being discouraged easily.

I guess a lot comes down to how the coaches have managed him behind the scenes during this period. If he has been given specific work ons then I believe he is the sort of guy who will go away and improve in those areas. If he has been dropped without any explanation whatsoever then yeah he would be justified in being extremely pissed off. I would be very surprised if that was the case however, for all intents and purposes Farrell is an exceptional man manager and he clearly rates Crowley.

I think more of comes down to what he is being offered by the irfu rather than not starting at 10 recently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭uptherebels

If you aren't going to be given game time, you can't force your way back in.

And he would link up with Rowntree as well ( I've a cousin over there & word there a few weeks back Wig was being lined up)

Do you think that Crowley feels like his international career is over?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭uptherebels

I don't know what Crowley feels

How do you propose a player force their way in without game time?

Heard on the radio he was being offered 600k by tigers. That seems a bit far flung in my own opinion but the fact that he's been offered anything at all is important here.

The timing as well, one game left in the 6N and a lions tour this summer, he's unlikely to be picked by the lions so his best chance is the Irish summer tour to Georgia and Romania and then November. He's probably feeling fairly dejected by the 'team of us' to put mildly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,659 ✭✭✭sprucemoose

i doubt he feels that way, but he is also getting miniscule minutes at 10 despite the starter being mixed at best…..

does he rate crowley though? he absolutely should, but i dont really know. if he did rate him, then its strange that he didnt start him against Aus last november. its also strange that SP was basically given the shirt for this 6Ns with little to no disruption (im aware easterby is coach at the moment, but i seriously doubt that farrell had no conversations about this before he officially took leave).

if farrell really rated crowley then he would want him as an option for the lions and so would need him to at least get some gametime at 10 in the 6Ns. whereas, i personally think he wants to bring prendergast and so needed him to get as much exposure before then as possible. again, i personally think the best thing for ireland in the long term would have been to start crowley this year with SP on the bench, have crowley go on the lions tour and have SP lead the ireland summer tour - would have put them both in a good position to fight it out for the ireland jersey in the autumn, since SP would have gained more experience in the meantime with leinster too

25 year old 10 who's won the urc and has won a 6 nations is a great marketing tool

Are we sure Jack Crowley is going to be offered a central contract? Has it been reported by the media that his representatives are in negotiations with the IRFU?

i doubt anyone thinks that as this stage, last year probably but now no

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,430 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Strong provincial performances, improvement in specific areas highlighted by coaches, injury or other availability, versatility, change in tactical focus, loss of form by the incumbent.

Crowley is a young guy with a long career and a lot of caps ahead of him. He and Prendergast will each have injuries and fluctuations in form. Coaches will change, and the game will change to favour different skill sets. If both are too good not to select the temptation will be to get them into the same team. Crowley could play significant minutes at 12 post Aki/Henshaw.

I'm not doubting the fellas abilities, or his brilliant record, far from it, but are they skills that are worth 600k? Maybe they are these days and my mind is stuck somewhat in the past in that regard

What would he be on with the Munster contract? Half that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,928 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

    why was it mismanagement?
they saved a fortune on his wages and he was still able to play because the ‘rule’ didn’t apply to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,659 ✭✭✭sprucemoose

strong provincial performances dont seem to matter though, SP had barely played for leinster before he played for ireland. arguably SP hasnt shown great form either and there doesnt seem to be any sign of getting back in the team

and i doubt he'll be playing much 12 unless its off the bench, seeing as Jamie Osbourne has been earmarked as the next in line there (by the media anyway)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭uptherebels

What constitutes a strong provincial performance? Not everyone can get an armchair ride at provincial level.

What specific areas highlighted by coaches?

An injury may never happen, also doesn't mean the incumbent won't be parachuted back in

Change in tactical focus? The coaches decide that, are you saying jack just does what he wants in games?

Loss of form!!!! That's a good one, poor performances by the incumbent didn't work lately, why would they work in the next year or two, as the incumbent is being "developed".

Saying well Crowley can play another position isn't really the point.

His reps might just be making sure the CC comes through. Strike while the iron is hot and all that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭CptMonkey

I don't see it. The irish management are totally behind SP even tho his form is terrible. Jack got about 20mins at 10 the whole 6nations. Can't get the jersey back if they don't put you in.

I hope he doesn't go away but I would understand if he did. They way he was hung out doing media and SP started.

Leicester tigers after Crowley supposedly. Hopefully just a negotiation tactics.

I am not saying that Crowley does what he wants, I'm saying that Ireland's tactical focus could shift in a way that lends itself to Crowley's skill set over Prendergast's.

There is some discussion on the topic from about 2:20 in this Squidge video, where they posit that Prendergast's selection is primarily a reflection of the team's shifting tactics (playing less phases, kicking more), rather than an implicit indication that he is a better player than Crowley.

I would not like to see him leave Munster but I would wish him every success financially and competitively if he left. I think he has handled himself very well during the six nations and proved himself mature and professional enough to be a team player. But maybe he knew he had options in the pipeline if he wasn't getting a fair roll of the dice in the ireland set up. And maybe Ireland were aware of these future developments also. It would explain alot if true.

So wait and hope that his skillset comes back in need by the coaches. not really a way to force his way back in, now is it.

Prendergasts kicking from hand has been poor especially against France. He is also slow in getting his kicks away.

Care to address any of the other points
