People shouldn't be too excited that heir BBC Sounds still works with VPN. It works without VPN too 'cos the change is not in effect yet. Just read the links lads.

Just in relation to "In Our Time", there's a very limited selection of content in the "BBC Audio" app but I can see recent episodes from that series under History section.

Very disappointing to hear this. Will the GAA Social podcast be limited to people in GB and the North? I listen to some of the politics on BBC Ulster and some regional rugby podcasts. Will be a shame to no longer have access.

    It's a great app

Some of the podcasts are on this new BBC app that will be available and not geolocked.

    The GAA Social is there.

I expect it may start getting loaded with intro ads.

Just noticed all of the BBC radio channels are on our IPTV service.

This is a big blow. I would gladly pay a subscription to access content for international listeners. At home, I mostly use the Sounds app on Alexa to listen to Radio 4, Radio 2, and 5 live primarily (with Nord VPN for access to the live matches).

I know the BBC is good at detecting VPNs. I was using VPN unlimited but it was always detected, Nord VPN is a lot better but I still have to switch regions in the UK as some get detected and some don't.

I can see some streams on that are already are "UK only" and don't work on a regular connection.
I assume at some point everything except Radio 4 & World Service will be switched to same setup.

Not sure how Virgin Media feeds will work.

The fact that you will be able to get R4 and the World Service on https://www.bbc.com/audio suggests that this has something to do with music i.e. it's driven by copyright issues.

I have Virgin Media cable TV in Dublin and use the radio socket on the wall box to feed the FM aerial socket on my amp. so, for many years, I get BBC R2 on 90.1 Mhz which is the signal from Divis.

Seriously gutted about this, I have been a huge fan of BBC6 Music for years.

I listen to 6 Music as soon as I wake up, listen to it in the car, in my office at work, when I get home, going to bed and over the weekend - love all shows and music, especially Cerys Matthews on Sunday morning. There is no other station like it…

I thought maybe this wouldn't happen, but I see today on my BBC Sounds webpage the following has popped up

'We're replacing BBC Sounds outside the UK and bringing you BBC.com, a seamless way to read, watch, and listen - all in one place. Visit bbc.com/audio or need more help?'

I would also pay for access, but I don't see that as an option.

    Fk it anyway 😓

They have a product that people want but won't allow them to pay for it - how nuts is that?

Agreed! I’m paying I guess €50/yr for a vpn primarily to watch the BBC online. Charge me the equivalent of the bbc licence for a subscription to all of the BBC and I’d snap it up.

The BBC Sounds app is already gone from Apple’s Irish app store.

What’ll happen to Radio Ulsters output online i wonder? The Ireland France rugby match is not geoblocked on the Sounds app currently.

I feel your pain. It's the samll things I'll miss, like Lisa Tarbuck while getting dinner eady on a Saturday. Just another example of how everything everywhere is going to sh!t.

Some terrible pessimism in this thread. As already mentioned, get a decent subscription based vpn on your device and connect via bluetooth to your smart speaker. Similar for the car. If you don’t like going the online route, the BBC national stations (including R6 Music) are free to air via satellite from 28.2E.

or download the TuneIn app. Also I’m getting prompted to update my iOS BBC Sounds app but I haven’t so far in case the update puts the blocker on it, I’ve also signed out of the App Store , probably won’t make any difference though!

I've no doubt they'll be geoblocked on TuneIn. They already block some live sports on BBC 5.

BBCR2 isn’t wiring currently on Apple Music. It’s been unavailable since early this week. Hopefully this isn’t the beginning.

I had noticed that. Didn’t know the reason.

I can still access the BBC through Radioline, hopefully that doesn’t change

Need to look into a solution to take in an analogue audio feed (from the back of a satellite receiver) and stream it over wifi, a Raspberry Pi should be well capable of this…

Some terrible pessimism in this thread.

When the BBC can't give a straight answer to what happens to Radio Ulster online for listeners in the Republic i can understand the pessimism

Radio Ulster is an oddity alright. Its sport output online is not geoblocked up to now. You would think at least the rugby would, considering RTE radio would be broadcasting the game in the South. Maybe the Good Friday Agreement might be a reason here?? It must be the only BBC station not blocking at this stage. Radio Orkney & Shetland were carrying Scottish football commentary in the clear from Radio Scotland, but its now geoblocked this season.

You can watch BBC tv without using a VPN BBC 1 2 3 4 tv . Bbc could put their podcasts on podbay FM or some other website there's a lot of UK citizens who live in the eu . I understand it costs money to stream radio stations around the world. I listen to a few BBC programs like archive on 4 or desert island discs .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,608 ✭✭✭thereiver

They probaly have contracts with live sports rights holders so that may be a reason to geoblock some radio stations that have live sports broadcasts .

definitely. We’ll need to start a support groups for those missing bbc radio 6, I didn’t realise there were so many fans over here! I love listening back to Huey’s show during the week. The station in general is a great source for new music, it’s shocking how bad the radio is here in the republic, built to suit advertisers and record labels.

Does this mean all bbc podcasts to Spotify will be blocked ? Regularly listen back to some of their shows through this.

I would think about a vpn, but considering all devices like phones and pcs etc are linked up via email etc, is this going to mess around with my geo location for other apps? Do I need a “burner phone” to run a vpn through?

on bbc 5 live, this has been gone since 2024 on TuneIn, assume that was first to go due to licensing on premier league matches.

BBC podcasts won't be affected it seems, and plenty already play a sting at start about how podcasts are supported by advertising outside the UK...
