I think France are hungry to win the contest. They've done really well winning Junior Eurovision multiple times in recent years and after coming close in 2021 and coming 4th last year, they're on a roll. I think they will be the best bet to beat Sweden and Israel. Also watch out for Austria and Czechia.

No Nutella smearage for Marko - Kudos however for incorporating the old ‘Bran Flakes’ jingle into the chorus. 🙂

    Tasty Rating: 6/10

I'm surprised Finland is that high in the odds, the juries are going to hate it. And while I had Erika down as a likely televote winner when she won UMK, I think some of the songs revealed since are going for the same viewers as Erika (e.g., Australia) so I don't feel as certain about it as I did a few weeks ago.

Exactly, I feel Finland, Malta & Australia will be fishing in the same pond and unless one of them has exceptional staging they will kind of cancel each other out to a certain degree. If they do cancel each other out it might allow something else to grab the televotes, who knows it might even be a family friendly catchy song about a little dog who went to space….

Emmy can definitely get the kids / teens / family friendly televote this year. The likes of Finland and Malta are very 'adult' (for obvious reasons).

I’m really surprised that Malta was allowed in. It’d be an ok song if it wasn’t for those 2 very clear words in the chorus. I always let my kids stay up to watch but I’d think twice this year if Malta qualified.

While Finland is a bit risqué it’s not in the same league. It’s kind of on the level of those polish milk churners a few years back. Of course it does depend on the staging.

Still have to check out the. Australian entry. I’m almost afraid to look !

    News on Malta!

Miriana Conte just posted on Insta that the EBU aren't approving 'Kant' and she'll have to change the lyrics. Must say I'm pleased with that tbh, should never have been allowed in the first place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭supereurope

I guess Malta's defence was always: it's a word in our national language, it's not right to make us change it just because it sounds like a bad word in English! That defence might work if it was a coincidence, but it wasn't - Malta knew what it was doing. I was never a fan of the song, and it is a borderline qualifier anyway - Finland and Australia are in the same semi, and because all three are going for the same voters, one is likely to be kicked out at the semis and I suspect it could be Malta.

I think people have been saying for a while that the BBC was likely to push back on the word, whether they're behind this, I don't know, but good for them if it is.

yeah the whole justification for Kant was ridiculous. Nothing in the lyrics is about singing and I doubt very much that the Maltese word is pronounced that way. I read somewhere that it was also an homage to the sound of music movie to mark the fact that Switzerland are hosting?!? Total nonsense.

Malta seems to be blaming the BBC for this:

    https://timesofmalta.com/article/eurovision-rules-malta-cannot-use-word-kant-entry.1106047

9pm is the watershed in the UK, and I assume most other European countries. The 8pm start time for the contest only applies in the UK, Iceland, Portugal and ourselves - for most countries it starts at 9pm (or later.) I wonder if this could be the beginning of a debate to push the start time to 9pm BST/10pm CET?

Doubt it. It already starts very late in a lot of countries for what's usually a four hour program, doubt anyone wants it to finish even later.

If there were to be any time change I think it should start an hour earlier, I think 7-11 would suit a lot more people.

I only recently discovered that the 1971 contest in Dublin started at 9:45pm! Very different back then of course, as the whole thing was done and dusted in two hours.

I'd support a later start time if it meant a shorter show tbh. I know most Eurofans will consider that sacrilege but I think the final is too bloated nowadays.

I think a little bit of fat could be trimmed off the grand final, but overall I think it's fine. It's a once a year spectacle so I'm reluctant to complain about it.

The most crazy start time ever is when Baku hosted - the show started at 12 midnight! It technically means we've had Eurovision on a Sunday. Azerbaijan have since scrapped Daylight Saving Time, so the show would start at 11 local time if they hosted again.

    Austria is out

Haven't had a chance to listen yet, but I've been hearing good things so far

The UK entry will be revealed tomorrow morning. At this point, the world and its dog knows that it's going to be the country girlband Remember Monday with the song WTHJH? (meaning What the Hell just Happened?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭supereurope

It's a strong entry from Austria, and it's great to have something that doesn't fall into the "unserious" category, but I wonder if the casual viewer (who will make up around 80% of the viewers on the night of final) will find it a little similar to Nemo?

UK just leaked, Its really decent and i thought that i would not like their song as the back catalog had nothing that screamed wow.

Folks if you listen to this please make sure to stream tomorrow at least once

I think it is a mess...it feels like about three wildly different songs just wedged together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,557 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

This seems to be the trap that befalls many countries every single year - submitting a song that sounds like the previous year’s winner, which has never worked.

I’m surprised Nemo hasn’t called in his lawyers. 😁

    What The Hell Just Happened?

Well, We Couldn’t Decide Which Chappell Roan Song To Copy So We Smooshed Three Of Them Together.

    HIYO! 😁

Oh yes, it's long been a contest tradition to have songs "taking inspiration" from the previous year's winner.

And, as you said, it never works. Voters rarely go for the same thing two years in a row.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,790 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Just listened to Austria there, and honestly I thought it was incredible? I didn't make a connection with Nemo at all. If he can pull that vocal off live then I think it's got winner potential.

The UK... I'm not sure? It's a clear step up on what they usually send (although not that that's hard), but I'm not sure I actually like the song very much. At the very least it looks like a respectable jury score will be on the cards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭balanced24

    The first verse includes:

People say, "Don't be so loud

Shut up, shut up, I'ma be real loud

And the chorus is Mother “what is it you Kant face” Superior Sound of Music:

    Do-re-mi-fa-s-s-serving kant

    La-la-la-la-la-la-la
    Do-re-mi-fa-s-s-servin' kant

I’d just add in more Maltese they have the word fuq (pronounced fook)

Defo getting chappel roan vibes. To be honest, it’s very stop start. I kind of tuned out after a minute. On the plus side you have to hand it to the UK for at least managing to sound like something from the current music industry. Look what we picked. It sounds like a reject from the 90s competition.

Listened to both UK and Croatia, both seem to have a jarring change like it's two different songs in one.

Is Bambi Thug to blame for this, I'm amazed other countries are copying/taking inspiration from a modern Irish entry.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,657 Mod ✭✭✭✭Say Your Number

That Austria one is the most jury bait entry I've ever heard, can see it winning in a landslide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,402 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I like the UK entry. It's quirky and interesting….even if people don't particularly like the constant changes in tempo and genre, it's still a song you'd remember afterwards (and clearly much better than that 'Dizzy' thing from last year).

Currently third favourite with the bookies, so definitely in win a big shout.

Waited for the official UK release this morning instead of listening to the leak.

As others have said here, it's a bit "Why sing one song when we can just sing four?" I mean, this was the key to Nero's success last year, blending several different styles in a song, but at least their transitions were smooth. With Remember Monday, they're very sudden and rather jarring.

That said, I don't hate it and it should stand out. If the vocals are strong on the night and they get the staging right, somewhere between 10th and 15th is achievable.

Most importantly, it's a big improvement on the last two years (I liked I Wrote a Song, but it was ruined because Mae wasn't a great singer, and last year was just a mess, weak vocalist, generic song and terrible staging.)
