Anyone have an idea what is involved for their installation process? Been with Virgin for the past few years who set up their own line here in the midlands.

Do have a phone cable that comes into the house, although nothing at the end of it. Just curious if anyone has experience in terms an install for what is involved in it?

As bad as all Eir were previously, wouldn’t mind been able to swap providers, even for a year as Virgin been the only decent operator for a speedy connection in recent years. With the competition catching up, least gives viable options to swap providers for a cheaper rate.

If the old copper line is accessible the installer will attach a plastic feeder pipe to it and pull it out with the feeder pipe following. At the drop point he'll attach the fibre to the feeder and pull back again drawing the fibre into the house. You'll need a socket close to this entry point as he'll install the fibre termination point there and it needs power, this termination point has a standard network connection that connects to the router. You can place the router anywhere you like.

Did you manage to pair the eir fibre box with the eir wifi box?I'm having a huge problem pairing these devices, I follow the instructions and every attempt ends in failure.

Connecting to your eir fibre box 7:

    1. Turn on the WiFi Box by plugging it in and pressing the on/off button.
    2. Wait until the LED flashes red.
    3. Then press the WPS buttons on your Fibre Box 7 for 2 second’s and on your WiFi Box for 4 second’s.
    4. The LED should start to flash blue.
    5. The WiFi Box will adopt the WiFi name of your Fibre Box 7.
    6. Allow 5 mins for the WiFi Box to pair to the Fibre Box 7.
    7. The LED will briefly turn red, amber or green depending on the signal strength before moving to a solid white.
    8. Allow 5 mins for the WiFi Box to connect to the Fibre Box 7 again.
    9. Finally move your WiFi Box to the required location, if the LED changes to red or turns off the WiFi Box is too far from the Fibre Box. Move closer to the Fibre Box until the LED is green or amber.
    10. The LED should be green for optimal performance.
    11. To check the signal strength after setup press the WPS button for less then 2 seconds.
    12. The LED should remain solid white, while in the default setup.

sorry if i missed this in the thread but for NBI customers who go from 1 to 2gb whenever its made available do we need an upgraded ONT box? i thought i read somewhere that these were limited to 1gb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,064 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

No the older OpenEir ONTs were GPON, limited to 2.4 Gbps DL

The newer are XGS-PON, 10 Gbps symmetric.

Finding the main box quite good but the mesh extender's rubbish. It's complaining about 'bad link' while the router's are physically in view of each other about 6m apart.

It's a shame it's not compatible with any other mesh gear, at least as far as I understand, but I think I'll be looking around for an alternative.

I'd assume WiFi 7 gear will begin to drop in price a bit this year. It's in early adapter premium at the moment.

supposed to get my equipment today, but DPD thought to arrive 45 mins early and the courier went home with my parcel in his van, so can’t even get from depot.

    Appreciate ya DPD.

While that is true it doesn't mean they are going to upgrade the older rural Gpon network. They went ahead and offered 2gb to the Urban FTTH network and left the rural untouched. The urban 2gb will get upgraded to 5gb in June but they probably won't upgrade the Gpon part of the network until sometime in the future, perhaps when the 500 and 1000 plans eventually become phased out. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see OpenEir upgrading the Gpon network in time for June.

I got my extender today and finding the same thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,360 ✭✭✭Raichų

they newer areas that are capable of higher speeds weren’t necessarily upgraded retroactively the capacity for 2gb has been there since the areas went live eir just didn’t offer it.

I could avail of 2gb since fibre launched in my estate in 2022 for example. Open eir didn’t do any upgrade here for eir to now sell me 2gb.

I was not able to connect the set wirelessly, but the connection via ethernet cable works fine, I have an additional ethernet line upstairs and I used it to connect the Fibre Box 10GB ethernet ports to the 2.5GB ethernet ports on the WiFi Box.

The next problem concerns the Fiber Box 7 interfaceVery often the main page does not show information about connected devices, etc. In my opinion, this device requires an update, or did I get a faulty product.

Yeah the newer areas where fitted with 10Gb capable speeds from day 1 whereas the older network offers up to 1Gb and no more. Eir were along time coming with their 2Gb profile while Blacknight, Vodafone and several others have had that speed profile for ages. I thought Eir were not offering 2Gb profiles until they upgraded the older rural FTTH Network but that doesn't seem to be the case now that the 2Gb profiles are live with Eir and the rural FTTH has not been upgraded to allow such profiles. I just hope OpenEir do the upgrade for the rural network soon so we can also get the new speed profiles but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm also finding it weird that they are going to offer 5Gb speeds to the urban network from June. These speeds require 5Gb Network cards to function at those speeds and most high end gaming and computing venders don't even offer 5Gb networks with 2.5Gb cards the maximum they offer on sale, so very few people are going to get 5Gb speeds without the network cards available to buy for consumer/gaming pc's from the likes of Dell/Alienware/PC Specialist etc.

As for gaming consoles they struggle with 1Gb speeds wired so many devices including expensive PC's won't be getting these speeds until Network cards higher than 2.5Gb become widely available which they certainly aren't at the moment.

On The phone to Eir this morning. They said the mesh extender failing to pair is a known issue. They have a firmware update for the router that should fix it but hasn't been rolled out yet. They are going to upload it to my router and hope for the best basically.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,613 ✭✭✭✭guil

No joy, they had to raise a ticket on it so I'll get a call when they have an update to the firmware and try again.

I tried a wifi analyser app and the extender shows as a hidden SSID.

Yes, you are correct - currently the vast majority of consumers (and even enthusiasts) will not be able to utilsize any speeds above 1Gb.

When wired, even a PS5 taps out at 850mbps. Even if consumers had capable hardware and devices - what real advantage will there be? Your iPhone isn't going to load that TikTok video any faster. :)

Many consumers are under the illusion that faster speeds will help when working from home and little Johnny is in the other room is playing his Xbox. Reality is that the network utilization of games like Fortnite can be measure in kbs!

Anyways, it's still a good change and a welcome move by Eir.

I use my own network equipment (Ubiquiti Unifi) and I can see that the WAN port has negotiated at 10gb. Obviouslly, I'm only getting 1Gb as per my contract - but it was a good move by them to install future proof equipment.

I'm on the older Gpon network and on the maximum speed plan for that 1000/100. I have everything in the house wired with wifi switched off entirely. Both my Xbox Series X and PS5 struggle to reach 800. My poor Nintendo Switch wired barely gets to 250. If I do switch on the wifi phones just about get to 300.

I hope OpenEir upgrade the Gpon Network to fall inline with all other FTTH rollouts and that we're not left waiting years and years to finally get speeds beyond 1Gb. It's not that hard for them to upgrade the older Gpon network since all the gear is already in place and only the black boxes need replacing along with the ONT inside the house? The main reason I want a 2Gb plan is for the upload for work as the maximum upload I can get is 100. The 200 upload with the 2Gb plan is a nice speed bump which sadly I currently can't avail of.

For anyone existing in contract customer - were you able to order the upgrade OK?

Were you able to get it at the existing new customer price of 49.99/month (2 year contract) - and was there an install/equipment cost?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,613 ✭✭✭✭guil

Customer care will offer it for €69.99 but ask for the loyalty team and they will do it for €49.99. No install or equipment charge. I ordered Monday and had the router delivered Wednesday and the extender/mesh arrived Thursday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 426 ✭✭PixelCrafter

Yeah it took me ages to figure them out. They eventually paired.

    Seems you just:

    1. Let extender fully boot - red light starts flashing.
    2. Hit "+" on both devices to activate WPS
    3. Wait .. and you need to wait a considerable amount of time. This is where it gets unintuitive.
    4. Eventually the LED on he extender turns orange/green etc to show signal strength and then solid white.

The problem is it gives no feedback while it's going through this rather long pairing and adoption process.

an isp supplied modem giving 2/3 of the speed on WiFi?
and 150mb upload my ass 💪

What WiFi devices are you doing the speed tests on? I know for certain I don't have anything capable of those speeds on my wired network. It certainly looks impressive.

Upgraded on Wednesday as an existing customer and got the 49.99 deal. Router arrived today, I assume the extender will arrive in the next few days

I left them hours with no joy, tech support asked me to connect them by cable and after I got a green light remove the cable and try WPS. That worked briefly while they were beside each other but when he asked me to move the extender, WPS just kept timing out on both. Blue flashing light for a few minutes and then back to red flashing.

I had to reach out to the sales rep that I got the deal off, they forgot to add this option to my account. Check if you have the addon active on your eir account (https://my.eir.ie/account/) if not, reach out to them.

    Thanks for that.
I rang yesterday and was told to go from my current 500mb @ 45 pm contract it would be 69.99.
Is it when on the phone to Customer care I ask for the loyalty team?
    Thanks
