The 2Gb/s product has 200Mb/s upload and the 5Gb/s will have 250Mb/s up.

AppleTV support is likely to stay, as the iOS/iPadOS app is the AppleTV app. All of the Iliad companies seem to support AppleTV, they just don't provide the AppleTV hardware anymore, so if you have your own box, I would assume you can just use it, much as you can use an iPad or an iPhone etc.

The apps they're using look very much the same as what Salt uses in Switzerland, so I assume they're being developed for Iliad.

The Android TV box is also exactly the same as Salt.

From what I gather, the issue cropping up is older and less technically savvy users don't like UI that lacks a remote that has a numerical keypad. Seems that's a barrier to uptake of services as people expect it to work exactly like a cable box.

A lot of providers offer AppleTV support just as a downloadable app, but you provide your own hardware - from their point of view iPad/AppleTV/iPhone is all the same thing.

It's the eir F5000 or "Sagemcom Box W7" manufactured by Sagemcom. There's a 10GB WAN port for the ONT, a single 10GB ethernet port and then 4 1GB ports. Also a blue USB3 port.

Wow, not even a single 2.5 or 5Gbe lan port!

Going to be an expensive few months upgrading my network equipment 🤣🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 817 ✭✭✭feargantae

There is 1 10GB LAN port, but the other 4 are all 1GB

ah sorry misread that and just seen the wan port, ok that isn't too bad then for when they launch 5GB. I'll have to see how it goes when they install on the 14th.

If they are doing their own TV box, they really should put a HDD in it for local recording. Too many of the channels block or limit the cloud recording. That is the big blocker IMO, less so number buttons on the remote.

I think all providers have stopped with the internal HDD and have totally limited what can be recorded due to rights issues - unfortunately.

Ya did it today. No worries. Still had 9 months left on my original contract. Sorted in 11 minutes. Been with them 8 years. Never an issue

I have been with Eir with the past few years Broadband and 2 mobiles and never had one issue with them.

Yes service is generally fine, it’s when you make any change to your package they usually find a way to mess it up and overcharge. That’s the last I’ll say on it as to not derail the thread entirely.

Sky and VM, Freesat and Saorview still have options with HDD, though Sky/VM they are moving away from that too! I think the IPTV companies like Eir went down the wrong path by not including a HDD and local recording, it is the cloud recording that created the rights issue.

Is there any way of seeing what areas are serviced by this? I can put in my eircode and it says only 1gb available, I'd just like to see the full map to see how much coverage there is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,786 ✭✭✭Glaceon

At the end of the day, the channels want you using their streaming apps with targeted ads.

This new service by Eir is available to everyone in the urban FTTH rollout areas but unavailable to those of us on the rural FTTH Network as Eir has not upgraded the rural FTTH beyond Gpon. I hope they at least offer an upgrade solution at some point over the next year or two and that we're not left waiting a decade or more for them to upgrade.

Speeds of 2Gb+ are also available to everyone on the Siro, Virgin Media and rural NBP Network, so it's just the Eir rural FTTH network that is currently left on gpon with no upgrade path at the moment.

I have Vodafone 2Gb, but using openeir network and its 200Mbps upload

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 299 ✭✭NBAiii

I was just going on the Openeir profiles. They don't have a 2Gb/150Mb profile so if @KubaKLucan contract is correct it seems eir are throttling the 200Mb Openeir profile down to 150Mb which is pretty shoddy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,632 ✭✭✭Thor

    Ah 100 percent.

I was just posting as comparison. I hope it is 200 as otherwise I fear it won't be 10 percent for 5Gb.

One of my colleagues is Romanian and was complaining about how lacking the upload speeds are in Ireland. He has a 1Gb synchronous connection over there.

Generally the network is that good. It's very rare you would need to talk to them once you're setup anyway.

Customer care in any service is generally a game of roulette it's normally who you get on the day. It's the nature of customer care.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 299 ✭✭NBAiii

I don't think it is going to be 10% for the 5Gb product. The Openeir profile is 5Gbs/250Mbs.

The only reason I can see for the poor (compared to download) upload speeds is that they are all terrified of eating into their leased line businesses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,632 ✭✭✭Thor

That's the dream. Upload to me is more important.

Btw, if you're thinking of signing up to eir 2Gb, wait until the 1st of March because you'll avoid the CPI increase of €4 in April! Sign up in March 2025 and the first CPi increase isn't til April 2026.

Not sure if SIRO is fully 2Gb enabled everywhere yet? When I check on Vodafone's site they only show me 1Gb available (which is what I am already on via SIRO).

I don't have an Openeir ONT installed but I am in their coverage per the wholesale site so some ISP's will offer me 2Gb. Not really keen to switch though as with the family plan discount my broadband effectively only costs me €20 a month.

My new modem is arriving tomorrow and the service is being activated on monday. I will try convince them to activate it tomorrow and I’ll see what the upload speed is like. 150mbps is a weird cap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 817 ✭✭✭feargantae

Let us know how you get on! Speed tests over wifi/ethernet if you can!

Tbh I'd say the upload is 200Mb and eir are just covering themselves by saying 150Mb.

Anyone get a 2GB upgrade thats on the NBI network? I rang Tuesday and they said I had a 2GB connection available but needed to wait until Friday to order - ring them up today and they say it isn't available on the NBI network

I’m glad to say the boxes arrived today. I called Eir and got my line activated early. Took about 5 minutes.

    IMG_6416.jpeg IMG_6417.jpeg

Initial reaction is great, the router is pretty heavy and has a decent quality build. Thankfully, they provided a single Cat 6 ethernet cable in the box and didn’t throw in a Cat 5 Cable (Vodafone does that). The router has 1x10Gb WAN port 1x10Gb LAN port and 4x1GB LAN. Bit underwhelming to only have 1 port that’s capable of the full speed but hey, one is better than none. Setup was easy took about 10 minutes to updated etc. I don’t plan on using the router though as I have a whole home ubiquiti setup. I still was interested in its performance though.

After connecting to the wifi right after it was done updating, the performance was terrible. I was roughly getting 120mbps down, 200 up. This made me realise that the box had connected my iphone 15 pro max onto the 2.4Ghz band. Reason for this, not sure. I also noticed in the settings of my phone the Wifi 6E mode toggle that usually appears on compatible networks wasn’t there.

I logged onto the admin panel and found a setting called Wifi 7 Enhanced mode. Which all it does is enable wpa3 on the network to support Wifi 6E, 7.

I have no idea why this wasn’t on by default when the whole marketing is its wifi 7 support.

Though after enabling it, it restart and the speeds are really impressive for an Eir router.

    IMG_6421.png

This test was taken right next to it and the speed is insane. Comparable to my U6-Enterprise from ubiquiti the speed is the same which is mental to me as that is a €260~ access point. Though the performance is good next to it, when i went into my kitchen which is one plaster wall away. the performance tanked down to 700mbps. Granted that is still amazing speed but the radio either has its output power lowered or it isn’t the best. Nevertheless extremely impressed with the performance.

In the furthest corner of my second floor in my house (the router is located downstairs) the performance is about 200mbps. I do not fault it as 6Ghz is generally shorter range.

Overall, There are two things i can takeaway from this experience.

    (1) Eir has significantly upped their game with the routers they provide, no more of the bargain bin sagemcom sh!te they pushed down our throats.

    (2) The plan is indeed 2000 Download and 200 Upload, even though the contract stated the upload would only be 150mbps. Happy days.

I look forward to the 5GB upgrade in June

I am happy to answer any questions you lot may have about the service and I’m open to test stuff.

For those interested about the extended box:

    It has a 1x2.5Gb port and a 1x1Gb port
