looking to build a table tennis table that will most likely be outside or in the shed most of the time. Any recommendations on most suitable 8x4 sheet I could use?

Fair enough if they are rough; I am mostly just asking where can I get hardwoods rough, pao or otherwise near Louth? It's a bit of a trek to go down to Dublin for it, and I would like to shop local if at all possible.

Not timber so apologies if this is off topic but I have a box of 200 8x2 slotted steel wood screws and probably a similar quantity of 2" floor brads that I'm never going to use so if anyone here wants them give me a shout.

I've got a number of lengths of tongue and groove mahogany that was used on the body of a horse lorry.

It has been out through a planer to remove the varnish.

What would be the value of this? I'll measure the boards later when I get to them.

Have a look on Strahan timbers website to see if there's anything similar. Are you sure it's mahogany?

are there many screw holes? that'd limit its use. if you don't know what sort of wood it is (i don't) i guess it'd be very hard to put a price on it.

I think from memory there are holes at 24" centres.

I thought it was mahogany, but looking at the grain I'm not sure. That was what I was told.

My guess would be sapele and probably not worth a whole lot.
A salvage yard might be your best bet.
Failing that it’s donedeal for whatever your happy with.

who will buy it will also boil down to how usable it is. if there are screw holes every two foot, you're essentially selling two foot lengths so a buyer would need to have a use case which calls for that size stock - two foot long, probably less than an inch thick, maybe four inches wide?

could be laminated together i guess, for thicker slabs.

I'll burn it before I deal with all those halfwits on dung deal!

Might get someone to take a close look at them and let me know what timber it definitely is.

I've also got mahogany door frames and a few doors that were salvaged from a site clearance. Any value in those?

The bottom of my easy grower rotted through.
Looking to replace it and found:

Would that do it or not last long?

I use polycarb in the bottom of any planters I build. And I line the wooden sides with plastic.

    Hi.

Would anyone here have any experience working with baubuche? I'm thinking of buying a worktop and using it as a desktop on sit/stand legs, so wondering if there are any special considerations working with it (edge routing, straining for example).

    Thanks!

Thanks that's a great idea. Do you use L shape brackets or beams to hold it up?

There's a typical view of my soon to die ash.

    30 years old.

I'd like to use the wood for various small projects, but my question is what is minimum size that sawmill would be interested in.

The best of the remaining trees that are disease free or disease free in the trunk is between 200mm-210mm DBH.

Is that of any use commercially

That's such a shame. All your hard work…

The guys who make hurleys might be interested in the bottom metre or so.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 53,032 CMod ✭✭✭✭magicbastarder

i think straight grown ash like in the pic is not what is traditionally used in hurleys; that they prefer a slight kink in the bottom of the trunk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,195 ✭✭✭Large bottle small glass

The hurley lads have taken what was useful.

The killing thing is nearly all the seed Dieback came from imported plants.

A few months before the ACRES scheme was launched, which has led to an unprecedented demand for native plants, Coillte shut their largest nursery. Coillte or the department never spoke to each other of course.

The end result is the importation of native plants from Belgium and elsewhere. New diseases in our native plants is very likely.

If there is a more incompetent department I haven't seen it.

    Hi All,

Just wanted to share a place I have bought some hardwood from in the West Cork area. Its McMahons in Dunmanway. You can buy rough sawn lengths of 8ft (2.4m) of various hardwoods such as:

    PXL_20250220_114050357.jpg
    • Ash (Pictured)
    • Beech,
    • American Oak,
    • Poplar,
    • Iroko,
    • Walnut
    • Sapele.

They will home deliver locally, but you can bring a handsaw or battery saw if you need to get it into your car. (pay first!)
Usual caveats apply, you need to check for twist and cupping, you are buying as is. They are not a hobby shop, but were not actively hostile to me buying a small quantity. They sell by cubic foot.

I bought two boards, the White Oak was €107 per ft3 and Ash was €55 per ft3.
I have previously only really bought small bits of PAR Beech online from the carpentry store and Abbey woods so this was a new experience as an inexperienced hobbyist.
    Hope this is useful
