Another dig at the motorist. I assume this will also hit domestic electric bills and hence home charging ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,830 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

A bit of a stretch to call it a dig. The rate was reduced for a set period. That period runs out at the end of April. It was brought in after Russia invaded Ukraine.

It may be extended. But there's no mention of that yet.

Call it what you like but it’s just another subtle way to discourage drivers to move to electric cars. It should be extended as it was brought in to offset the sudden increase in electricity prices. Said prices are still high and show little sign of dropping.

You keep insinuating that this is intentional. Why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,717 ✭✭✭joe1303l

I’m not insinuating anything. My opinion is that it is intentional, another way of taxing the motorist. Why do you think it’s not intentional ?

Quite simply because it was introduced in May 2022 to run for three years exactly. Which three years are almost up. And I've no idea why you're talking about motorists. This affects all electricity users, not just the tiny proportion of EV owners.

There's no present intention for it to be withdrawn, that was baked in when it was enacted.

The likelihood is that it will be extended. Electricity costs have gone up if anything.

This is an Ionity charger thread and this vat rate increase came up in terms of increased prices. Yes it affects all electricity customers which I asked about in an earlier post. Let’s hope you’re right about it being extended but I’m not seeing much public outcry.

I think you're giving significantly more credit to the government. It's likely less grand conspiracy and more "we need more money and can't raise taxes, so let's just let the reductions expire"

You may as well claim it's an attack on people who use toasters. They aren't changing the VAT rate for people who charge cars, it's for all electricity usage.

This will be felt more by household bills than motoring bills, its not driven in any way by taxing motorists.

Yes it absolutely affects all electricity consumers. On this particular thread in the context of Ionity, this change also increases the cost of public charging. Ionity is already quite expensive to start with. Very little in it now compared to buying diesel. Its a small increase but it’s just a move in the wrong direction if you’re supposedly promoting the transition to EV’s.

I did exactly this last summer worked perfectly using the wifi - mobile phones reception (both with vodafoneIE and 3 (different phones)) was non-existent

From those of you with the Ionity app, how do you know how many chargers are free at each charging station? For example, if the app tells me 4/6 at one specific location, is this 4 chargers are free or 4 chargers are in use? Apologies for the basic question, I've just got my first EV and I'm still learning!

In the Ionity app, it means the number of chargers available

    i.e. 4 out of 6 are free.

If you hit the [Select Charger] button, it will show you status for each charger (you wont be charged).

Its not obvious to a new user, so dont be hard on yourself. There is a learning curve that goes with EVs & charging, especially as there are no unified payment methods.

In theory it should also be felt very slightly by petrol drivers as the pumps use electricity to pump the petrol into the car, the tills, lights and credit card machines etc etc

To be fair to Ionity they reduced their prices (albeit from a very high base) when the VAT came down while others increased their prices. They have said their passport plans will increase by about 2-3c and their standard rate (which is ~64.5c ex-VAT) should go from 70c to 73c

It's not even obvious to a somewhat seasoned user, I almost always have to hit "select charger" when checking to remind myself if it's the free or in-use chargers they mean

Does anyone know if Ionity plan on upgrading the number of stalls at Ionity Athlone? I've driven in and straight out again twice in the last two weeks because it was full and there were at least three queing that I could see parked opposite waiting to hop in.

It seems routine now to see people at 90%+ soc according to the app but are happy to sit and continue to charge....more stalls are badly needed there - 6 isn't enough at peak times.

Ionity Athlone is a sh!tshow. Theres been constant issues over the last few months, even with the new chargers. If 2 are out of action then it becomes congested any time of day.

I think the issues at ionity Athlone are a symptom of the inadequate charging infrastructure along the M6 in general(compared to M7) eg Galway plaza is pathetic and Galway city is no great shakes either.

How does Volkswagen’s we charge work at ionity ,do you get reduced rates?

I’ve the car set up for plug in and charge,it’s compatible

Have I missed something or did ionity very quietly increase their prices?

I use the annual subscription and it's still €0.44/kWh

Where are you seeing an increase?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭vinniem

Yes they did earlier this year I think, they were 0.69c kwh and now 0.77c

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,924 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

It's 77c now in the app without a sub, electroverse is now 76c and the Tesla multipass is 72c. It was previously 69c through ionity

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75 ✭✭Megastreisand

Ionity was 66c with Electroverse on the 30th March, I haven't had to use it since then.

More expensive than diesel at that. Luckily most EV owners will just be adding enough Ionity juice to get home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,143 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

It's all relative. Plenty of older diesels on the road that would be more expensive than an EV to operate per km until electricity went north of 1 euro per kw/h.

Not sure I quite get it.

There was a claim that public charging prices are more expensive than diesel.

It's relative though. If you're contemplating moving from an older diesel and jumping into your first EV you'll see savings even if the per kw/h rate was up around Eur1.00. Go back just a few short weeks and that might even have been Eur1.20. Exactly my use case a few years back btw, so I know this situation quite well.

Are we on the same page now?

It depends on where you fill up your ICE and what fuel efficiency your car, and a comparable ICE car has.

If using Ionity at 77c in a car tat does 15kWh/100km Vs a car that can do 5L/100km that's roughly 3:1 ratio which means 77c is the same as €2.31/L of ICE fuel

Current diesel prices are about €2/L so if you can get your electricity for less than 66c/kWh you're beating the diesel prices
