"I think the reason for it all is that Trump is a business man not a politician.

He sees the mineral wealth in Ukraine and wants to have a piece of it for the US, as payment for support for the last few years being his alleged reason, but in reality he's just a man who sees everything as a commodity to buy and sell."

I totally agree with your assessment 👍

Trump also seemingly lied (gasp) about not being involved in bringing the Tate brothers to Florida.

unbelievable stuff, usually don’t be worried or pay attention to stuff like this.

This is hardly gonna last 4 years? Surely there are bigger forces at play in the US that wouldn’t allow trump to totally dismantle the US’s standing in the world?

Tramp showed his colours today, a classless vindictive shyster, absolute lowlife!

Trump will not want another fiasco of a press conference. He can get away with one but MM woukd be a different proposition. English is his first language so he will be more nuanced in his words.

HHowever If Trump and Vance decided to have a go he be more than able for them. The bigger fallout for them.is what he woukd say after. Problem for Trump is if he needs Vance to continually holding his hand at meetings it will become obvious very fast.

Looking back on it was Vance there to rake the sh!t

IMO , it was a set up, . Why? Because that press conference was held BEFORE the signing of the rear earth agreement. If anyone is signing an agreement of importance - like this one is- the LAST THING either side would do is to TRY AND UPSET the other side , especially in public and minutes before the agreement is signed.
I think that Trump was not too serious about getting the ‘ rights’ to UKr gas, oil rear earths, etc. It’s not that the US is very short of any of them. Putin has dollops of them all and has offered same to the US!!!!!!!!

I always found it strange that Trump was only interested , EXCLUSIVELY, in the rear earths deal and with ABSOLUTLY no connection to the war - either directly or indirectly. When asked about securing the mining areas from Ru attack he poffered that that’s The EU’s responsibility - top of his head stuff. Whereas VZ would not do a deal with the US without some guarantee built in re security and UKr sovereignty, etc, etc.

IMO, Trump /Vance knew that the signing of the agreement was never on , then decided to ‘ let fly ‘at the press conference, try and belittle / shame VZ, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. calling him a dictator, no elections for years, his clothing style, that he has a big yacht, that he is ONLY STRONG because of the help the US has given, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, is all part of Trumps ‘playbook’

AND NOT A CUCK ABOUT PUTIN !

Imagine being an American in 40 years time trying to explain to a grand child that you once voted for Donald Trump to be the President of America

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,319 ✭✭✭blackcard

Or calling Churchill a dictator because there were no elections during the war years.

When Trump was stating he just wants peace, Zelensky should have said 'Same as Neville Chamberlain'

“Europe needs to come hard on Trump”. What Trump has done is to make the issue MUCH BROADER than its reluctance to help UKr going forward and the BIG POSITIVE NOISES he is making re Russia. I would expect that a number of other countries would be very happy to ‘help the EU out’ re trade , security, military exercises, arms production, etc, etc, such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, NEW Zealand, etc. I would also be looking at all those countries that continually vote in favour of UN motions supporting Ukr

    car crash stuff

Trumps wants peace. His idea of peace is giving Russia what they wsnt

his rare earth deal is like a pikey tarmaccing your driveway and coming in with a bill at the end

I'm watching on with some amusement more so to the hypocritical and hysterical reaction of commentators and leaders alike than to the events of yesterday themselves. Trump and Vance are fools, they've no filter, so the naked interests of US imperialism that many US leaders demonstrate are more on show without the mask of faux support for democracy and human rights.

Zelensky finding out what it's like to be on the wrong side of US imperialism - the families of the slaughtered Palestinians and their leaders must be looking on with a wry smile as he was summarily dismissed, they've had to endure the US supplying the money and guns wiping them out and the same EU leaders hysterically leaping to support Zelensky standing with the US against them.

On what basis are you certain that there is a Russian stooge in the white house?

In my opinion Trump is acting in the best interest of America, in his mind at least.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

It will take time - we’re just now getting the measure of Trump and his administration of sex offenders and crooks and how they wish to behave towards the world - words were just words throughout the election - we’re now approaching the actions which of course aren’t pretty.

In terms of the EU economy, until new markets can be opened up, 25% tarrifs and massive uncertainty will stifle growth leading to job losses and most likely recession if not worse.

I don’t think anyone is actually “entertaining” them from an EU perspective - they’re engaging simply because not engaging right now will be worse for us- if ultimately Trump unleashes economic Armageddon on us, then yes, that will be the time to disengage - but right now I think EU and UK are trying their best to engage in order to try and minimise the economic penalties on their countries and search for new ways for all to make money and look good which is essentially what Trump is about

Markets are like self levelling compound, they will find a way.

If trade can't go West it will go East.

You're up early with a whole new tune. Yesterday you were blaming Zelensky for his disrespecting Trump by not turning up in a suit.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Trump is acting in the best interest of Putin.

It is undeniable, but here you are.

in most situations where you have one side arguing/ debating against another Or two sides trying to come to common ground especially - like this situation you normally have a ‘GOOD COP/ BAD COP “ situation .
But here we had a ‘BAD COP /BAD COP “ setup. If Trump wanted to increase the chances of VZ signing all he had to do was to ‘ water down’ the comments made by Vance. But he did 100% the opposite. Indicates to me that the US had lost interest in the deal at that point

Comparing last night’s shitshow in the Oval Office to a terrorist atrocity that killed thousands?

Would you ever cop da fcuk onto yourself.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Telegram:

"I think Zelensky's biggest lie of all his lies was his assertion in the White House that the Kyiv regime in 2022 was alone, without support. How Trump and Vance held back from hitting that scumbag is a miracle of restraint"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,472 ✭✭✭circadian

He wants all the gain without the pain. Zelensky is 100% correct in requiring security guarantees as part of a ceasefire, it is not unreasonable. Trump clearly is ubwilling to commit to that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 362 ✭✭scrotist

The whole situation is a **** show but I think zelensky should have just stuck to meaningless diplomatic politic speak for the interview. Say lots of words without saying anything and don't ruffle feathers. And then start going off script behind the scenes and ruffle all the feathers you want. I think he fcuked up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,413 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

I think Trump will look back and be furious with Vance for escalating the conversation. In business terms, we had 2 CEOs talking about a deal. All the talking and negotiating by the underlings is done behind the scenes - it was time for the 2 CEOs to take centre stage. Chain of command. However Vance opened his stupid gob (the first time I ever heard him talk actually, didn't know who he was) and rather than Trump calming the situation down, he decided to double down. It was a big mistake. Maybe he did that so himself and Vance appeared united at least. He didn't want to show weakness by letting a VP appear the alpha.

I think Trump will bring Vance aside today and tell him never to open his gob when 2 leaders are talking business. Do VPs normally sit beside those 2 chair press gigs? He may not be 3rd wheel the next time.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Really? Really? It appears to have been set up to ambush Zelensky

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,217 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Is the best interest of the US to start to disengage from allies that supported it for the last 70 years. Countries that provide troops and military aid after 9/11.

To support a moder Russian dictator

    Slava Ukrainii

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,617 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Do you think Trump aligning with Russia and destroying any form of a world order isn't gonna cost tens of thousands of lives? Him just removing aid from Ukraine is gonna cost lives. 9-11 is absolutely an apt description cause it's a key moment in history with far reaching consequences.

You guys really are very poor at looking at the big picture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,697 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I used to enjoy Trumps interviews, and have a laugh at his nonsense that he came out with.

But what happened yesterday was worrying and the 1st time I genuinely feared that he is actually dangerous. Yesterday could have real consequences for the world.

To grow up watching politicians and heads of state do politics and often not really saying what they want to, but for the greater good, to watch yesterday was a shock. This man is a complete idiot, backed by idiots and sycophants, as well as voters who believe every single word he says. If yesterday was put into a spoof sketch show, you'd have said it was far fetched, but this was top level politics which could have repercussions for the entire world. And he's only past his first couple of months in charge , what damage is he going to do over the next couple of years?

    SAd and very worrying times.

So in summary, Trump wanted President Zelensky to sign a ceasefire with an actively hostile aggressor who currently occupies Ukrainian territory and has been actively killing civilians. The USA in return gets $500 billion worth of minerals and Ukraine gets Trump's word that Putin wouldn't attack but if Putin does attack USA will do nothing. Even though there have been 25 instances in recent history where Russia has not honoured their agreement.

that invitation reminds me of Angela Merkel trying to keep on ‘the right side ‘of Putin by building that pipeline and buying Germanys oil/gas needs from RU - thinking that Ru would not invade anymore, etc, etc, etc.
