if the rear earth deal is confined the mining behind the lines- ie no the Ru side- then there is no way that the US will have staff there if they are not guaranteed protection. So Trump must have something in mind to protect them for the duration of setting up the machinery and extracting the minerals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,197 ✭✭✭Economics101

The whole rare earth thing got little mention until recently, and now its a $500Billion mega deal. How much is there in terms of proven reserves? Where are they exactly? Are they economically viable to extract? How long would it take for revenues to actually flow?

Maybe if Zelenskyy promises a huge share of the profits, DJT will get a huge share of very little, and then in 10 or 20 years time. Sounds like a good deal for Ukraine if DJT has a big equity stake in such a risky proposition. Seems consistent for someone who baknrupted his casino

Because they are signing the deal Ukraine proposed earlier with minor tweaks and calling it a mineral deal is really not on target. Basically the agreement is a fund to be built for rebuilding Ukraine based off income Ukraine currently don't get (i.e. any existing mining, taxes etc. are by default excluded). USA will then have a veto on how half the money going into said fund will be assigned. There is zero guarantee that USA will get any rare minerals or anything else nor any payment back etc. There's a longer video on it here with someone going through what it actually means: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X2GW_JvPMk&t

It's basically another "win" for Trump that's really meaningless in practice as most of his deals are as it's not really doing anything.

THis confirms many of my doubts about the Ukraine minerals deal.

"We'll give up our nuclear weapons and you'll sign a treaty guaranteeing to leave us alone".

Oh wait, that was 30 years ago. How'd it work out, again?

US can already hit any spot on the globe with precision. They don't need missile sites. This is just as silly as the claim that they invaded Iraq to get oil when they already had cheap access to all the oil they needed, and then some. (In fact, the US is now not far off self-sufficient in oil production)

This is the most disturbing thing I have seen for years:

Check video on this post 1:19 long, Trump literally tearing into Ukraine saying that they are going to cause World War 3.

This is disgusting and makes my blood boil.

Disgraceful from Trump. Just when you think he can't sink lower, he does. We should boycott the Patrick's Day meeting under this administration as he will just end up badmouthing Ireland and the EU. The days of the US being a reliable partner are OVER.

The most disgraceful conduct I have ever seen from politicians of a western democracy. Trump and Vance's behaviour was absolutely sickening. The world was watching and it wasn't a good look.

Zelensky wanted "security guarantees" in exchange for giving Trump the minerals.

It looks like the agreement didn't contain any concrete security guarantees and that's why he didn't sign it.

I don't like Zelensky but if this is what happened I think he was correct.

I wouldn't trust Trump, he'd take the minerals and b###s### Zelensky about how he'd defend Ukraine. But do nothing.

    I think that's what happened.

I don't think it even got as far as Zelenskyy indicating if he was going to sign or not. Trump and JDV just attacked him because that was their intention all along. The only positive is that they couldn't help themselves and the world can see what they really are. I'm sure Zelenskyy had no intention of signing anything but I'd say this has played out better for him than him outright refusing to sign.

The Trump regime were never on his side and were going to bully him regardless of what he did. Good thing they are so stupid that they pulled back the curtain before even getting to the signing table (not that anyone with any sense didn't know what they are like already).

Trump is an evil, vindictive prick who only cares about himself. I just hope enough of the American people see this, although there are many who will think Zelenskyy was the problem here.

It was the height of stupidity on behalf of Trumps handlers, ( although I dont know if they can control him) he and Vance made complete fools out of themselves, Zelensky came across as the only sane person there. And made his case stronger than ever, while Trump and Vance made it into a personal vendetta, with strong kremlin influence. I don't know what public political diplomatic gaffes Trump / Vance are going to commit in future, but for sure, that meeting will take some beating for sure!

Maybe the meeting never got as far as talking about the minerals deal.

But that was the whole point of Zelenskyy coming to the White House in the first place.

I'd like to see the text of the deal.

I'd say any guarantees in it from the American side about defending Ukraine were fairly vague and undefined.

It's clear that Trump and Vance want Ukraine to give in to Putin.

That's their plan to end the war.

Trump originally thought Zelenskyy was stupid enough to sign the terrible deal, which in Trump's mind was the goodest deal ever (gave him all the benefits and with no responsibilities). When he realized he isn't that stupid, Trump just started attacking Zelenskyy. It started a few days ago with the dictator comment and Trump has been seething since then as the whole world called out his bs.

Before Trump became President he boasted that he would end the Ukraine war because he was a "deal-maker".

Now we see what he means by this; he believes he can make deals between two opposing sides by bullying the weaker side into caving in to the stronger side.

Zelensky is fkd. Delighted to see, being played for a fool by the psychopathic European "leaders" and the previous US administration-none of them can beat Russia, Trump acknowledges this, time to stop the slaughter and get a, deal, although Ihor won't be happy 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,383 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I hope he's not fucked, he's done a fantastic job representing his proud people against an unprovoked invasion by a Superpower .

It's beyond sick to see you support Russia's latest territorial acquisition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,383 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Absolutely, deal means surrender and also let us rape your country of natural resources.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,343 ✭✭✭mulbot

You've no clue, I'm not getting into schooling someone who's so ignorant on the matter as to calling it an "unprovoked invasion".

Yawn, the usual Russian talking points as "truths" and hints without daring to actually put up sources or back anything up. We've seen it all before over the Ukraine war already; to bad for you that not only does the Ukraine population support Zelensky and the war still but so does the significant majority of Europe who sees it for what it is. As always we'll get hand waving to missile sites, chemical weapons, Ukraine wanting to join NATO etc. but for some very odd reason the minor items such as Russia's promise to respect the borders for ever when they got sent Ukraine's nuclear weapons back etc. never appear to come up; always Ukraine's fault and never a word about what Russia promised or did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,343 ✭✭✭mulbot

Get real will you, the Ukrainians are so supportive of the war that their men are escaping the country. Most Europeans see it for what thruve been told, big difference, they didn't give a flying fk about what was goin on in Ukraine back in 2014,15,16,. By the way, Ukraine couldn't fire nuclear weapons, they hosted them only. Talk to people who lived in the Donbass, you haven't a clue.

Russia is in absolute bits economically. Their economy is now smaller than Italy's and smaller than the state of Texas. They are not far off being beaten, simply because they are fast running out of money to fund the war. Something doesn't add up at all. Any other US president would relish the opportunity to deal a killer blow to Russia when they are at their weakest in decades but not Trump, for an as yet unknown reason.

The AP and Reuters were banished from the Oval Office today. TASS, which is not a member of the White House Press Pool had a representative get in "somehow". The whole thing stinks. The argument was a show, set up for the cameras by Trump.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,963 ✭✭✭jmreire

It was a setup to justify Trump pulling the plug on all aid to Ukraine, and it worked as designed. So Trump and Vance (and therefore the American people) were insulted by President Zelensky's so called "disrespect". All choreographed down to when Vance stepped in with his disrespectful remarks. Now it remains to be seen when exactly the deeply offended Trump's response will be, and what form it will take.

Ditto NATO expansion, that well-worn hoary old chestnut is still regularly wheeled out

From Gorbachev himself, and he should know, he was there.

Thats what they said about Zelensky back in Feb 2022, yet he's still here, and so is Ukraine. Ukraine has been in tight corners before and will be again before this is finished, but this time round, Europe will be involved because they well know what's next if Putin wins. Slava Ukraine!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,407 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

With full access to the weapon and minding that Ukraine was the centre for most of the USSR scientific and military advancements, it would not have taken them much to reconfigure for their own use.

putin needs a weak trump to fight for him as russia have failed absolutely catastrophically on the battlefield against a much smaller and lesser equipped army.

Just because you've fallen onto the internet recently doesn't mean that others haven't been watching Ukraine and russian aggression for more than the past decade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,963 ✭✭✭jmreire

Leaving Ukraine,, well, for your info, since 2022, its thought that 2.5+ Million Russian men have left to join the estimated 30 +million Russians worldwide who have left Russia..their brightest and best. As for the Nuclear weapons only being hosted with the actvation codes being held in Moscow. By now old weapons, old codes. With modern computers, and Ukrainian ingenuity whats the betting that they couldn't crack the codes? And beside nuclear weapons, they handed over large qtys of conventional weapons too. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine inherited a large arsenal of conventional weapons, including tanks, aircraft, and artillery. As part of various disarmament agreements and efforts to reduce military tensions, Ukraine transferred many of these weapons to Russia or dismantled them.

Speaking of Donbass, have you been there?
