I think this hits the nail on the head. When so many players are underperforming in one work environment for so many years and then flourish in a new environment (regardless of what they are paid) the root of the problem is systemic and that's a long term cultural problem that needs to be fixed from top to bottom. Swapping in and out the odd manager who has a different training / playing style doesn't address the core of the problem at all.

You always get the odd bad apple who just downs tools as soon as the big contract is signed but it tends to be the exception, not the rule.

Onana, MDL and Maguire all not good enough. There is a reason Bayern were happy to let MDL go.

Would agree with trying to get more PL experienced players in . 3 I think would improve us would be Nathan Collins, Mbeumo and Adam Wharton. All with a good age progile

if going PL proven I would be looking at

    Huijsen - LCB.
    Milenkovic - CCB
    Guehi - CCB
    Baleba - CM
Hackney - CM - but not PL proven tbf.
    Gomes - CM
    Wharton - CM
Nunez - CM (prob not possible but i'd ask the question)
    Dibling - RWB
    Cunha - L10
    Gibbs-White - 10
    Delap - ST

    So that's it lads, 20-20.

They'll be getting more in before we even get a chance to challenge

Utds decline will take years to reverse

I'm not even sure it can be reversed as long as the parasites are still at the club

Let's hope it's not quite that bad!

    Anothy watch.

An assist and a straight red card

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,946 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

He must have as many assists in a few games for Betis as he had in his entire United career?

    Edit, just checked.

    United - 96 games - 12 goals - 5 assists

    Betis - 6 games - 3 goals - 2 assists

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,109 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

He had 3 goals in his first 3 games for us. It was the other 90 odd games that were the problem

Fair enough analysis of Hojlund and his teammates from MOTD / Deeney imo.

A recognition that Hojlund definitely should be doing better when on the ball (he had 7 touches against Everton) but also an acknowledgement that he's making good runs but his teammates aren't picking him out. And they kind of touch on the issue that the players aren't taking the risk to pick him out as the Manager is looking to not lose possession. With the rare occasions that he gets the ball, he's isolated.

It's the basics we fall down on.

Running back at the necessary speed.
Playing the ball too late or too many touches on the ball so the runs from the striker and inside forwards / no 10s are wasted.
Not first to a lot of 50/50s.
Slow closing down the space in front of the CBs in particular.

Don't really buy into it being as simple as that and it's not like when he gets a chance he scores what a decent striker will score.

As a supporter who was happy when we signed him and liked what I saw he simply being well below average.

Seems a good lad and seems shot on confidence at times but he simply being brutal for us lately.

I was thinking the next international break might help Rasmus, if he got away with Denmark and maybe bag a few goals in a low pressure friendly against weak opposition…

Except they're playing Portugal in the Nation's League QFs.

In one way he does need to be taken out of the starting line up - but I don't think we will start Chido and moving Zirkzee would mean Bruno or Eriksen at 10 which I don't see either.

I don't see how we can get away with not starting Garnacho and Zirkzee as the 10s, meaning Hojlund up front, unless someone is injured or near dead on their feet.

Will be interesting to watch Delap on Wednesday - I think he is probably our most likely striker signing in the summer, for better or worse. In that i think he is a talented, promising striker, but not the seasoned vet we probably need. Also, and it may be a consequence of playing for Ipswich, but he doesn't display much box presence, which is something we already lack.

He has a similar heat map to Hojlund

Watkins is the perfect map imo, no chance we'll get him but need to be looking at someone of that profile.

I get that it will be bit disappointing initially. 20 times will be sung at us im sure. But like you say in other post it was 18-7.

But I don't think any Unted fans should feel shame towards it. We are blessed to have it, just like 3 European Cups.

Lot in here remember 99. Pretty much everyone here remembers 2008. Great days. Enjoy and brace it.

My uncle supports Rochdale. Never seen them win anything. Lot fans would love have what United have.

Yes its tough being United fan at minute,

    but,

The club had its whole squad wiped out once and came back to win Europe's biggest prize just decade later.

The club was relegated and came back.

United been in low points many a time. In 100 years time we all be well gone and who knows maybe Rochdale will get sugar daddy and have most leagues in 2125.

Don't worry about the small things. Embrace and enjoy what we have. We are the lucky ones.

I would not swap being a United fan for anyone. Being one has being a privilege even if I never seen them win a big one again.

Hojlund is having shocker and even his pressing is awful.

He looks to me like a lad who is overcome with information and his mind is gone. He is lost as he is so unsure of himself and what he should be doing that he ends up doing nothing.

These things can happen with system managers. Some players will struggle to adapt. Having the physical attributes is not enough and a good few players have struggled.

The one who shone was Amad as he was a player that could take on the asks of the manager and retain his ability to take people on and force his will on the game.

Hopefully it will click for Rasmus soon. The last goal he scored was brilliant and it's hard to believe the player we see now, that was able to come up with the ingenuity, has so little confidence.

I actually think it's the opposite. The Varane interview was interesting as it highlighted the intense tactical approach that ETH wanted his players to follow. RAs system is a lot more straightforward IMO and I think Hojlund is overthinking what he should be doing instead of playing his natural game which would actually suit the system a lot more.

I believe a summer reset will do him and a few other players the world of good. Get back to basics and start playing rather than thinking. The whole wrestling of CBs that he has developed a habit of doing wasn't part of his game before he arrived, which indicates to me it was an ask by the manager to get more physical with defenders. He's actually stopped doing that as much this past month and I think he'll regain his confidence (let's be honest, strikers are usually the most naturally confident players in any team even when it's unwarranted).

None of this is to excuse how poor he's playing right now but I think there's a player there that with a bit of work could easily be getting us 20 goals a season.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Not simple but I don't think it's an overly complex problem at the same time.

He has been brutal, his confidence is shot. At the moment, there's very little hope that he will turn it around.

But it shouldn't be a huge ask to get the team playing a bit better than they are, and in turn, getting him some more & better supply. I'm not absolving him from responsibility, just saying that he needs the team to help him get out of the terrible rut he is in.

I thought it was a well balanced and decent analysis from the MOTD studio, which is surprising in itself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,109 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Being overly physical with CBs was a big feature and was really noticeable for the first part of the season under ETH. It seemed to be an ill advised summer reset from last summer. Amorim seems to be going away from that lately, I think playing Mainoo false 9 against Palace was a sign that the penny had dropped that we can't be lumping it up as much as we had been doing.

I don't like these cuts and think many of them are probably unnecessary as they are likely creating a worse atmosphere at the club in the short term. On balance, I wouldn't like to see as many.

But one positive (and it's a big one) is that other clubs will know about these cuts and it'll create a perception that we won't be suckers in transfer negotiations anymore ala the Woodword/Arnold days.

So while INEOS are only saving pocket money with some of these measley cuts, they will view it as creating a reputation that'll help save tens of millions in the long run.

He's brutal. Nowhere near the level required. While most of the transfer business since SAF left has been terrible, swapping DeGea for this clown is up there as possibly the worst imo. Worst keeper I've seen at Utd.

Job losses formally announced. 150-200 jobs. Operation transformation. No mention of the free fruit.

No issues with any of that tbh and anyone that does simply doesn't understand how business works. 5 consecutive years of losses at the biggest club in England is outrageous.

Hard to take too much from the heat maps in terms of suitability imo. Ipswich just don’t consistently produce enough chances even compared to united and are the lowest for possession in the final third & penalty area. In a world where we had the likes of Dorgu, Fernandez, Diallo (and hopefully more!) fit and on form, could see someone like Delap getting more chances in the box and generally feels like more of a poacher. He’s more likely to take on shots that Hojlund, less one-footed and strong at headers.

Do they really need all that staff in the first place. I am not trying to be spiteful or anything but obviously you need your core staff but I would love to know what the staffing complement was compared to Liverpool or City
