Very mixed bag of a team performance.

Baird had a strong 40 minutes off the bench. Some very muscular carries and big hits behind the gain line in defence. Thought Lowe and JGP had very good games also.

POM was good. Thought he faded near the end, but lasted longer than I thought he had would too.

Osborne did brilliantly to stop that Wales try in the 73rd minute.

if prendergast plays like that against the french, we will be crucified - Crowley has to start

POM did well, huge tackling stats babysitting prendergast. Baird was good when he came on, although I think Conan should be 6 and Doris 8 for the french game.

Dan was quiet, i expect him to play like 5 men against the french.

Bealham is as important as Porter now.

an away win in the 6 nations is worth its forward pack weight in gold.

    Crowley has to start

I’d be shocked if he does.

Once again Prendergast played 80 minutes and Crowley came on at FB.

if he does start, there's clearly no joined up thinking happening.

I'd rather a grandslam with an outhalf that is useful in defense and attack, instead of having a nice spiral kick.

this is turning into "Putin has the peepee tapes of trump" with all the ignoring of the evidence.

Weirdly I think there's alot of positives to take from that

Osbourne recovered from a blippy first half to really show his pedigree

Boyle came off the bench, on his debut, on our 5m line.....and smoked their TH

Sam wasn't perfect but showed glimpses of class that we haven't seen in quite a while.

That was a cauldron, we were down to 10 men for 20 mins, had no no.8 for the second half and still won. That'll do me

Do you have a record of all you predictions? I don't think I've ever seen you get one wrong by more than a couple of points.

Our record in Cardiff is terrible, shouldn't be overlooking the value of getting a win there. Having a tough examination will add some spice to the training. I don't expect us to be so disjointed against France.

Prendergast missing what, 8 tackles? Against a lightweight Wales team. God help him against France. He's had some valuable minutes in the jersey but Crowley simply has to start now to have any shot at the slam.

Crowley, quite obviously, is not going to start against France. Whatever people's view on the position it is crystal clear that the management are going with Prendergast.

Now ignoring that, the discussion is a bit hyperbolic. Yes he fell off some tackles and its not a strong point of his game. He also directed field position exceptionally well, had one of the best 50-22s i have ever seen that led to a try, and generally had a strong game on offense. His line kicking was exceptional, one kick out on the full from open play aside.

A bunch of his missed tackles are soak tackles that someone else completes. It's not ideal but it is manageable. He will get better at it and he needs to but Ireland look a lot better in attack than they have in some time.

Our work inside the 22 however is dire and is becoming worrying.

Does the red card mean Ringrose is out for the France game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,952 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

    I would imagine so

Almost definitely, and possibly Italy too though Leinster have a game next weekend that might count as a game for him to moss. Though in reality we all know he was never going bto play that game anyway.

down a man hurt us, but it hurt particularly because it was Ringrose, our defense is not the same.

as much as the overall discussion might be a bit hyperbolic, your assessment of SP's game is also a bit hyperbolic. He directed field position well at times but was equally anonymous at times - the 20min red card period being a particularly bad time as ireland tried to overplay in their own half. again, he had some great touches with the boot but he also had some very aimless kicks and the clearance he put out on the full was particularly bad.

i think the talk about his defence is a bit ott in general but he really was terrible today and just brushing it off as you are isnt doing him any favours either.

i think the idea that ireland look better in attack with SP isnt fully correct either. they didnt look that great today, against both australia and england the attack looked much better with JC so that just leaves the scotland game? went very well in fairness but scotland are a pretty poor team when it comes down to it

SP is obviously a great player but its getting to a stage where he is being judged under completely different criteria to any other options - he isnt infallible

I've commented on this a few times on this forum, on both Leinster and Ireland, but I continue to be amazed by how completely **** joyless some of you are. Why do you bother following the team at all if your default reaction after every single game, regardless of result, is just blind rage?

    It's really, really pathetic tbh.

Great resilience shown by the team. Ridiculous forward pass missed in the Welsh try but these things happen. Henshaw was very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,820 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

haven't you said this today already, or was that when you said you were just taking a break from the forum?

Some Irish players were good, a lot of Irish players were bad, today.

this is where we discuss them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,972 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

The positives far outweighed the negatives for Prendergast again, and if others want to lie and state otherwise, that's their prerogative. But we all know what we watched with our eyes. He guided us to a third win in a row in the face of a malfunctioning scrum, a resurgent Wales side and a braying home crowd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

I have to say I think I'm missing something about Sam Prendergast that a lot here seem to see?

You'd think he was having a stinker based on some of the comments here. I'm not seeing that at all. He's been absolutely fine while delivering some moments that show how good he really is.

Does he need to improve? Of course. He's 22, but he has such a high ceiling from what I can see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,016 ✭✭✭Packrat

I couldn't see the point of him until Scotland. Now I do, and he's by far the most exciting prospect.

But yes, he had a poor game today with two brilliant moments.

If any other player missed 4 tackles not to mind 8 they'd be dropped from the 23. He'll start again.

He also had some poor poor kicks.

    Thats the truth of it.

    He'll have plenty better days.

Bigging up a poor performance does him no favour.

Sorry but that third line is just not true. I agree he needs to improve his defence but Ronan O'Gara got by for years being a speed bump and was never in danger of losing his place until Sexton came along.

To say he had a poor game as well isn't the case in my opinion. As I said, he was fine and gave us plenty of attacking platforms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,228 ✭✭✭✭phog

    Two things on this

    1. Some of the people that would have referred to ROG a speed bump are now praising Sam and talking up his ability to soak tackle players
    2. ROG probably hadn't anyone close to his class (until Sexton came along), unlike Sam who currently isn't as good as Crowley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,952 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Prendergast is a better tackler than ROG ever was. He made Geordan Murphy look like a brick wall by comparison.

Crowley isn't as good of passer, or organiser oft he attack. He's also nowhere near as good with his kicks from hand. Those two attributes are more valuable than Crowley's superior running threat to the coaches

its interesting that people keep saying that the attack looks better with SP at 10 despite their being no evidence of this apart from the scotland game, the attack was pretty poor today - as it was against england, as it was against australia (and NZ to be fair)
